OMD has named the second single from History of Modern and it turns out to be "Sister Marie Says." The song actually dates back to the early 80's, which is why out of all the songs on the record, this one sounds so much like what could be considered "classic" OMD. I'm not surprised "Sister Marie Says" is the second single. After listening to the album multiple times, I felt the toss up for the second single was between "New Babies New Toys" and "Sister." I'll say this, though, I kind of thought [...]
Back in 2008, Swedish singer Lykke Li released her debut album, Youth Novels… along came with it positive reviews and spots on a few “best of” lists for that year. Q magazine ranked it #37 on their best albums of the year list (January 2009. p. 82) and had the hit, “I’m Good, I’m Gone.” In case you forgot what this song sounds like, here’s an acoustic performance of it: Anyhow, Lykke Li is back with another most infectious track, “Get Some.” I took a listen to this song about 35 [...]

Girls may be an odd band name for a group of guys, but it works because well, I remember it. The actual members are all guys (how ironic) and include Christopher Owens, Chet White, John Anderson, Garett Godard, and Matthew Kallman. I'm not sure what each person does aside from Owens (vocals), but the end result is music like the featured track here, "Heartbreaker." Whenever I see a song with that title, my first thought is of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker," or even the one by Pat Benetar... Girls' "Heartbreaker" sounds nothing like those two... it's [...]

I’ve been reading about this new INXS album for a while now… I’ve been trying to get excited about it, but alas, I have been unable to be. I’m not sure what the reason for this is… it probably stems from their stint on the Rock Star: INXS show where they found JD Fortune (still can’t believe that’s his name) as their new frontman to replace the irreplaceable Michael Hutchence. For a band that I revered in the 80′s and early 90′s, I thought Rock Star was… an embarrassment to the good INXS name. [...]

Kurt Vile‘s day job is the lead guitarist position in the band The War on Drugs. He does a fine job in that band, and I’m sure he enjoys it as much as any lead guitarist would in any band. Vile also has a solo career, though, and has released three albums… the latest being Childish Prodigy. Although I’m familiar with The War on Drugs, I have to admit that I’m completely oblivious to Vile’s solo work. His new single, “In My Time,” could be an indication as to why that is so. [...]

Deerhoof will be releasing a new album January 25th, and now you can get a preview of what’s to come with a track off the album, “The Merry Barracks” that the band has released as a free download. Formed in 1994, Deerhoof is made up of Greg Saunier, Ed Rodriguez, John Dieterich, and Satomi Matsuzaki. The four members up and left San Francisco and are now releasing Deerhoof vs. Evil, an album they describe as “the musical equivalent of hormones raging out of control.” The songs on the album, minus “Let’s Dance the Jet” and “I Did [...]

Ahhh... another G.O.O.D. Friday track and all is well with the world. There have been a couple of interesting bits of news for Kanye West this past week. First off, he revealed that his teeth are diamonds. Yes. Diamonds. As in real friggin' diamonds. "I just thought that diamonds were cooler," he told Ellen Degeneres when he visited her show the other day. He then added, "It's really my real teeth. I replaced my bottom row of teeth. I guess there's just certain things that rock stars are supposed [...]

I got this email the other day, and instead of paraphrasing, I thought it’d just be easier to post the whole friggin’ thing: Grammy Award winning artist, Norah Jones will be performing live on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Monday, October 25th. The American singer-songwriter will perform “Chasing Pirates” as well as several other songs from her forthcoming album …Featuring with legendary hip-hop group, turned house band, The Roots. I love songs that build to a frenzy. I love that feeling of knowing what's going to happen and then getting that payoff. All I want is the payoff... Mean Creek apparently knows this about me (even though we've never met) and found a way to put all that knowledge into their stunning track, "The Comedian." Voted "Best Boston Act" in the 2010 Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll... Download: The Comedian

The National has released a new video for the alternate version of “Terrible Love”, which will appear on the November 22nd release of the expanded edition of their album High Violet. The new video was directed by Tom Berninger and includes tons of live and behind the scenes footage. Take a look at it below. As we told you last month, included in the expanded edition will be a bonus disc with two new tracks, three live tracks, and two songs previously available only on the Japanese edition of the record, “Walk Off” and “Sin-Eaters”.

You know what’s weird? Absolutely NOTHING happened to my buddy Barak “The Obaminator” Obama. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. No book was thrown at him. He didn’t start an argument on a talk show. He didn’t fall off a platform. He didn’t punch a 12-year old kid. He didn’t wear anything weird. Nothing. Well, he did do a lot of presidential stuff, but aside from THAT… nothing. Except eat pizza. One thing I’ve noticed is how angry he looks when he eats pizza. Take a look at Obama and pizza when compared [...]

Back in July, we posted the song “Split Second Time” by Travel By Sea. I described their music as “beautiful, beautiful music,” and I meant every word. Travel By Sea is back with a new album, Two States and the Blindness that Follows, and the band calls it “their most accomplished release yet.” The track, “Light in the Darkness,” is a good example of what you’ll find on that record: beauty, intimacy, a little twinge of country, folk, rock, and a whole lot of vision. Their official website describes [...]

Last month we posted about the upcoming live DVD by Depeche Mode… well, they’ve released a 6-minute teaser for the DVD (called Tour Of The Universe – Live In Barcelona), and it looks to be a must-have for DMode fans. It looks like the DVD takes you deeper into the Depeche Mode world with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage… take a look: Pretty cool. I had no idea Martin Gore suffered from stage fright. Anyhow, the DVD is set to drop on November 8th, 2010 (Europe), November 9th, 2010 (North America), and [...]

In my world, any U2 news is good U2 news, except when it's bad U2 news like the time Bono had back surgery to correct a slipped disc that led to complications. "I was walking around saying I could handle it but it turns out I was in grave danger. Those little bits that had broken off were starting to sever nerves in my spinal canal. I was losing the ability to walk," he explained in an article for TheAge.com. Bono's back on his feet, doing his Bono thing and being all Bono-ish for U2's continuing 360 [...]

You've probably heard of Richard Thompson before. I'll be honest and say that I haven't... my first exposure to Thompson was through this amazing track, "1952 Vincent Black Lightening." Right off the bat I said to myself, "Self? That's one bad-ASS guitarist," to which myself would answer, "No duh, Jack. He wasn't ranked #19 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists for no reason!" "Ohhhh... you see, I only know the top 18 guitarists." "You're an idiot."

I'm not sure if this means I'm a football nut, but I can't get enough of the NFL Network. I love watching the analysis shows... I'm afraid I don't know enough about football to be able to say whether these commentators are correct with their thoughts, but it's interesting enough to keep me coming back for more. Anyhow, NFL Network has a series titled The Top 100: NFL's Greatest Players. It's been a fun watch for me, especially when it comes to players that I actually know... like LaDanian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, Troy [...]
"Quirky" needs to be its own musical genre. I'd use it to describe songs that I simply can't quite describe. That doesn't mean that the song is bad or anything, as "quirky" can be a good thing... as the case with Callers. Take a listen to "You Are An Arc." It's not exactly the kind of song that's easy to follow at first... after multiple listens it still doesn't get much easier... but it remains interesting. The chord changes starting at 0:55 totally caught me off guard and practically made me jump out of my [...]
Back in May, we posted about Mumford & Sons' most recent album, Sigh No More. It's one of those records that you MUST hear before your time here is done. If you haven't checked it out yet, click here for some samples and video. Regarding...

Yesterday in our New Releases post, we told you about the new album by Elton John and Leon Russell titled Union. Elton John apparently had a great time working with Russell, saying, "It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, not just musically, but emotionally. I fell in love with this guy all over again." I'm pretty excited about spinning the record... so excited that if I'm not too careful, I'll get locked away for a condition known as "F***in' Crazy." Anyhow, to celebrate the album's release, I went back to listen to some [...]
