Local Bands on the Rise: Shook and Lionize Together at Santa Fe

Since reopening this semester, Santa Fe Live has undoubtedly reclaimed its role as College Park's premiere music venue, having recently hosted to two very talented local bands: Shook and Lionize. The night started off a little slow, with the crowd barely trickling in before the concert began.  This was not a complete shock, as most students and locals were aware it was the night of the UMD vs. Clemson men’s basketball game. As exciting as it may have been to watch the Terps win that night, I would still argue that jamming out at Santa Fe to the funky [...]

Album Review: Wu Massacre

Album Review: Wu Massacre The Wu is back but in a different form. Following Wu-Tang's disastrous 2007 reunion-album, 8 Diagrams, Ghostface, Raekwon, and Methodman, arguably the three most commercially successful and well known members of the Wu, have decided to form their own super group. After promotional videos, rumors, and album push backs, the project entitled Wu Massacre is scheduled to be released on March 30th. The project is a return to the basic foundations of what Wu Tang is. “Our Dreams,” the lead single with a distinct Wu Tang sound [...]

Local Bands on the Rise: Woo and the Yellow Dubmarine

Local Bands on the Rise: Woo and the Yellow Dubmarine Once upon a time, or maybe twice, there was an unearthly band called Woo and the Yellow Dubmarine. 80,000 leagues beneath the sea they played, or plied? I’m not too sure… Woo and the Yellow Dubmarine is one of those bands that elude classification. Are they a reggae band? Are they a Beatles cover band? Do they play original songs? The answer to all of these questions is yes. Woo and The Yellow Dubmarine takes Beatles tunes and fuses them with reggae influences to make a unique blend of [...]

Story by: Alexia Smith Potent and throaty vocals accentuated by skillful guitar riffs are brought together by Press Black; an up-and-coming trio from Easton, Md. Although their punk lyrics and post-hardcore feel are what the band is usually associated with, when asked what style they feel they most represent, no specific answer came to mind. “We always discuss this,” lead guitarist and vocalist, Cody Finkner, said “Punk is the closest thing [to us], but it is an umbrella term.” Press Black, [...]

Local Bands on the Rise: Fivestock

Fivestock - Hottentot
Story By: Sarah Kraut Currently rocking the College Park music scene is a self-proclaimed “collection of stone jack ballers” called Fivestock. With influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to the Allman Brothers to Phish, this band’s bluesy rock music is definitely something to be buzzing about. Though the group only formed in October 2008, their cohesion makes it seem as though they have been together for years. “We all have very different musical tastes,” [...]

The Hip Hop Column

The Hip Hop Column Story by:  Bobby Samuels You’ve heard of Lil Wayne right? Carter III? The guy who claims he’s an alien with the cool tattoos. Many independent hip hop heads out there just decide to automatically hate Wayne because of just that: his alien-esque music and beautiful vocoder that sooth our ears in bars, cars, on TV, in supermarkets, in preschools, etc. Yeah I’ll say that most of the Wayne you hear on the radio feels worse than waking up for a 9 a.m. class after being [...]

Venue Review: Sidebar

Venue Review: Sidebar Story by: Elana Rosman “The punk bar that refuses to move uptown,” said John Waters, a Baltimore-native filmmaker and actor, of his favorite bar, Sidebar Tavern. Sidebar is located in the middle of downtown Baltimore and stands out among the fancy, older buildings around it. Its location characterizes the people who visit during the day—lawyers who work in the area, talking to coworkers over a beer. By night however, the tavern takes on a completely different persona. It is home to countless local punk, hip-hop, [...]

While the band members, who were touring in Louisiana, only sustained minor injuries, the two individuals in the pickup truck were killed. Adkins was already at the venue of the [...]
