Baobab

Baobab Holy crap have I fallen in love with a band/record out of nowhere. Baobab, essentially Phil Torres (with some help from Whitney Trettien ), based out of Durham, North Carolina, just released their debut s/t album, and it couldn't sound less like a debut. Complex, mature, and impeccably arranged, the album is nothing short of hypnotizing. Spring, Baobab welcomes you into their arms. Fenster

Fenster It's no secret that we love Morr Music around these parts . So when we hear about a new Morr artist, we're quick to jump on them. Fenster, a New York/Berlin based trio, are set to release their new album, Bones , March 13, just in time for their US live debut and SXSW. Fenster makes experimental, melodic folk/pop, as expected from a Morr artist, but they slightly veer from the label's popular electronic pop sound. Check out one of the singles off Bones below. It's quickly becoming a favorite with that [...]

[MP3] Inspired and the Sleep: "What I Want and What I Need"

[MP3] Inspired and the Sleep: "What I Want and What I Need" Well, Valentine's Day is creeping up on us, and whether we're head over heels in love or reeling over a broken relationship, we appreciate the whimsical music that comes with it. Our buddy Max Greenhalgh, aka Inspired and the Sleep , recorded a cutesy twee song for I Love You & Stuff , a Hi54LoFi Records Valentine's Day Compilation release. On "What I Want and What I Need," Greenhalgh teams up with Kaila Abruzzo as they sweetly bounce off each other's voices. And, as Greenhalgh said, "Yes, that's a smooch at the very [...]

[MP3] Barna Howard: "Promise, I Won't Laugh"

[MP3] Barna Howard: "Promise, I Won't Laugh" Barna Howard sounds more like a lost genius from the 60's than a man about to release his debut album. The first track from Howard's self-titled album is "Promise, I Won't Laugh", a contemplative folk-song sung in the style of early 1960's folk singers like Dylan and Pete Seeger. Howard cites Neil Young, Bert Jansch and Townes Van Zandt as influences, but he does a nice job of not channeling them in any overtly recognizable way. This song is straightforward and well executed, making it all the more surprising and exciting that this is coming from his first record. Take [...]

[MP3] Cultfever: "Knewyouwell"

[MP3] Cultfever: "Knewyouwell" Not sure how I missed this a couple months ago, but Cultfever, a New York duo, released a stunning s/t debut album in November. J. Peter Durniak and Tamara Jafar, the driving Cultfever forces, created an extraordinarily lush album opener with "Knewyouwell," showcasing Jafar's charmingly innocent vocals and an array of experimental electronics. Billy Momo

Billy Momo Swedish music has found its proper place in my ears again thanks to Billy Momo, the duo of Oskar Hovell and Tomas Juto. As their website says, "Some call it "americana gypsy music". Some call it "hick RnB"." Check out a couple tracks below off their recently released debut album, Ordinary Men . It's easy listening, which in this case certainly doesn't mean a lack of depth, but rather a pleasantry I hope to find in all music. The choral end of "So Tired" is wholly satisfying.

Josh and Mer

Josh and Mer Josh and Mer are, unsurprisingly, Josh Schroeder and Meredith Adelaide, a duo out of Portland, Oregon. No, but really, their shortened band name is symbolic of their dressed down sound, stripping away the complexities while providing a simple, whimsical brand of indie pop. Their debut album, Planet Music , can be heard on Soundcloud , and you can download the lead single below. Josh and Mer - "From The Sea" [MP3] Josh and Mer on the web | Facebook | Tumblr

Rachel Grimes – Marion County 1938 EP

Rachel Grimes – Marion County 1938 EP Some days music owns you. Sometimes you come across a piece of music that literally stops you in your tracks. As each phrase passes you don't move an inch, voluntarily paralyzed, for fear of missing or accidentally drowning out some subtle nuance. This music reaches deeper than other music. Rachel Grimes latest release, Marion County 1938 is this kind of music. Chamber music isn't exactly the first thing to jump to the front of the line when you think of styles of indie music, but yet, here it is. As a member of 90's chamber ensemble [...]

Maggie8

Maggie8 You've likely noticed that I'm keen on starting the work weeks with something unique and uplifting. We don't often get Hindi folk submissions, and while at first the distinct sound can be a bit off putting, I think you'll grow to love it like I have. Maggie82s complex arrangements and excitable, orchestral instrumentation will surely put them on the fast track to success. When I can tell from recorded songs that I would love a band's live show, they must be in pretty good shape. Check out a couple tracks off their recently released This Charming Lady [...]

[Hype Hype Hooray] The Online Hype Machine Pushed Lana Del Rey Over a Cliff

[Hype Hype Hooray] The Online Hype Machine Pushed Lana Del Rey Over a Cliff Every [two weeks?] Jamie Hale takes a long, hard look at the music industry and the blog scene that feeds it. Here, he releases those findings and makes snarky, sarcastic remarks. Admittedly, both Jamie and Knox Road are a part of this scene. So sue us. "Poor Lana Del Rey" read The Hollywood Gossip on Sunday. "It possibly couldn't have gone worse," said The Huffington Post . Just what offense could Lana Del Rey, controversial internet singing sensation, have committed to warrant such a dramatic response? One of the worst offenses ever–she bombed [...]

Triple Gangers

Triple Gangers For those of us who had work (or school) off due to Martin Luther King Jr. day, I've got a band that will surely give us a jump start to our real week. This Toronto trio knows how to have fun with their music, and, better yet, knows how to show the listener that this is the case. 3XG , their debut EP released free in December, is full of bouncy pop, sheets of synthesizer for a little r&b flavor, and an unwavering youthful jubilance. The colors you see in the photo [...]

[Abby's Road] So, you're keen on music?

[Abby's Road] So, you're keen on music? My friends, the dear ones, are obviously aware of the music I fancy. Many of my closest relationships over the years were sparked by having a passion for the same records and artists. These people know my collection. I've left some of them confused (and annoyed!) in the past, not by what is in my collection (I've mentioned the Jethro Tull Christmas Album…eeep) but by what it's missing. Along with my long list of favorites I have a short list of bands and artists I absolutely dislike and do not have in my collection: The Beatles [...]

Dream Brother

Our friend Ian Anderson is up to new things and we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss 'em. One For The Team is no longer, but he certainly hasn't stopped making peppy poppy music. Anderson's latest project is Dream Brother, and the first two released songs feature special guests Paul Sprangers (Free Energy frontman) and indie-veteran John Vanderslice. Catchy yet understated, Dream Brother shows plenty of promise and serves to ensure that Anderson's musical prowess won't be leaving our ears any time soon. Dream Brother - "Haunted Heart (feat. Bogan Via

Bogan Via Bogan Via is a duo out of Phoenix that makes my heart go aflutter. Madeleine Miller's sweet falsetto is sweetly contrasted with Bret Bender's raspy baritone. Their songs heavily rely on the duo's vocals, but their angelic instrumentation also makes me swoon. Also, these words from Bender make it that much sweeter: About four months ago I saw a video of Madeleine singing an original song, emailed her to see if she'd like to meet up for a little jam out, and things have been gangbusters ever since. Gotta [...]

Little Cuts' 7" – Plastic Disasters

Little Cuts' 7" – Plastic Disasters It seems like ages since any one heard from The Shins. It's going on five years since their last album but word is that a new one is on the way in March on Columbia Records. So what have they been doing? Well, it seems Dave Hernandez has been working on getting back to his Scared of Chaka roots with his new band Little Cuts . The band's first release is the 3-song Plastic Disasters 7", brought to us by the fine folks at Dirtnap Records . The title track opens the 7" and it kind [...]
