Blog: Last Christmas

Apologies for the abrupt end to 2011's crop, and to be honest, that is not how I wanted to wrap up this silly little site. But a few factors are leading me to call it quits on being the end-all on Last Christmas cover collecting. It has been really pretty great and I want to thank everyone who has been interested and visited every year. Big thanks to the press we received each and every Christmas, it's quite amazing actually. Today is going to be short on words, heavy on tunes. Without further ado… Let's start with the one version that has never been done before. No other artist has attempted this genre, nor has anyone previously emailed me about this. We're starting today with, well, a gummy bear. That sings. In yellow underpants. Gummibär is some kind of international kids singing sensation. Reminiscent of Crazy Frog, but a little less annoying kind of. I am just more perplexed by Gummibär than anything else. Why is he always in underwear? And if it's for kids, why is he singing "Do you think I'm sexy?" Is this for adults? Maybe, there are a ton of club mixes for his songs...And why did Felix the Cat agree to do a duet with this whippersnapper? His videos have millions of hits but [...]

Saskatchewan aren't just another boy band from Orlando, despite what they would have you believe. Like Ennui, they dabble in that lo-fi hazy guitar sound, which is easily enjoyed often and on repeat. Their cover sounds like it might have been recorded on the surface of a 1960's imagining of Venus, if that makes any sense. It does to me anyways. Good day to you! Let's get started, shall we? We start with Japanese duo Q;indivi and their cover from 2009's Winter Celebration album. Fan and LC reader wohdin sent this last year, and we're just now getting to it, the shame! It's an upbeat, fun version without being obnoxious, which as we all know is a fate that many a cover song can suffer. Oh my goodness. Six years ago, without much thought behind it, myself and a friend decided to offer to the world an unnecessary and unasked for gift in the form of an uncurated collection of covers of Wham!'s holiday standard "Last Christmas." Besides underestimating the number of people who'd be interested in such a thing, we never thought it would lead to various radio and blog interviews, an MTV news interview, hanging out with bands, or even being interviewed for a graduate thesis on the topic of cover songs. I'm a huge fan of bands releasing holiday singles, even if only online for their fans to grab. I've got a soft spot for Rooney's pop/rock sound, so you can imagine how tickled I was to find they are offering three holiday tracks with any purchase from their online shop! So I was not familiar with the stylings of Swearing at Motorists prior to hearing their slow, melancholic version they offered last free last year and thought they offered a nice version. So I looked them up on Wikipedia and I think someone in the band is having fun with their entry, otherwise I have no idea what this means: Doughman mixes trace amounts of his own blood into the ink used in the disc printing process, pioneering the concept of the GrisD.
