This is an outstanding fan made video for Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear. It's made by Gabe Askew . Very impressive. And here's the official version but I think I know which one you will prefer.
Over the last few weeks, Pete and I have been busying ourselves with a new football super blog called Paperback Mitre . Please check it out if you're interested following our highs and lows through this new season. There is also small music section that will feature some songs that we enjoy. Football and music- it'll never work. I've posted three songs already, so for the sake of completeness, I will repeat myself here for ALE readers. Memory Cassette are a mystery. They are either a collection of [...]
Two incidents this week have proven to me just how vital a band British Sea Power are. Firstly it was last Saturday. As usual we were in the Star and Garter and they played 'No Lucifer'. Listening to that song, it feels like something massive that should be all over the radio. There's big moments for festival crowds to shout out and a clear chorus but then you listen to the lyrics ("the boys from the Hitler youth...a little lost roe dear") and watch the video and it's still 100% the same eccentric brilliant British Sea [...]
The Rural Alberta Advantage have filtered into my life like a lot of new bands do and that's through the wonderful guys at WOXY . Once I noticed a friend with great taste and a DJ from WOXY discussing this band on Twitter I knew I needed to give it a listen and I'm really glad I did. Their debut album 'Hometowns' is out now on the always right Saddle Creek records and from a few listens on train journeys it's really great. The RAA mix the best bits of Ra Ra Riot, The Dutchess and The Duke [...]
I'm very glad that Animal Collective 's new album was a big success. Well, when I say big success, I mean that more of my friends took notice of them and agreed that yes, they are a wonderful strange bunch. Now I feel it is my job to get them to go back and purchase the preceding albums, many of which are, in my humble opinion, better than Merriweather Post Pavilion. My favourite if you want to know is currently Sung Tongs, which is more or less just an acoustic guitar, tribal like drums and layers and layers of [...]
I bought this record a couple of weeks ago but I've only got round to blogging about it now for my ongoing series of weekly bought records. I will update again with this week's purchase soon. I was going to put in a bit of research before commenting about it and I quickly found out that Pitchfork had rated it the greatest album of the 1970s. I don't necessary agree with that, but it is certainly one of my favourites of that decade. And so, through laziness and admiration for great writing, I present to you Pitchfork's very [...]
It's been way too long since I found a nice moment to post a blog or two. Been busying releasing records and moving flat. James has done a fine job, his record collection is growing nicely. Anyway enough of this. Nathaniel Green are a two piece from Wakefield, Yorkshire. Growing up as the Internet was just starting to gain importance in music, a good friend used to be on a mailing list for Subjugation Records . An actual posted list. One band which came highly recommended through this mailing list was Nathaniel [...]

First of all, apologies for not updating this blog at the moment and for not updating it over the next few weeks but we both at ALE are moving flats this week. It'll take a little while to set up the Internet in our new place and to settle down so we'll be back in a few weeks. In the mean time, here is my recent Record Of The Week and you should all buy the new Ganglians album too. It's brilliant and perfect for the summer. (It'll probably be my next purchase.) I've just lifted the descriptions [...]
After buying an American, Scottish, then French artist's record, it was about time I turned to the English. Sky Larkin are from Leeds and I'm certain you've heard us sing their praise on this very blog before. They've certainly come a long way since we first spotted them back in 2006? The album The Golden Spike has been my most played album this year according to iTunes and rightly so. Sky Larkin - One Of Two [...]
Not too much writing this time, I'm going to let the music do the er… singing, which is supplied from Chicago's The Smith Western s. A lot people are saying they sound like Marc Bolan, but I wouldn't know about that, so I'll plough on ignorantly. The Smith Westerns - The Glam Goddess Musically, they are yet another band producing that lo-fi high distorted sound that seems to be quite popular at the [...]
Let's Wrestle release their long anticipated debut album at the end of this month and I managed to get, nay stole, a listen to it this week. For those of you that don't know yet and you really should, Let's Wrestle are a three piece from London who play scuzzy three minute power pop songs which emphasises attitude rather than style. I talked in my last post about how much fun Phoenix are. I feel it's very important to have in your collection plenty of albums that can only be described as fun. They may [...]
I never really got into French band Phoenix . I knew they had some good reviews and some dedicated fans, but I never put the time into them until their fourth album came out a few weeks ago. And I never expected it to be my next record purchase. Wolgang Amadeus Phoenix has proved to be my go to album in the last two weeks. By that I mean that whenever I was on the way home from work and I wasn't sure what to listen to, this would be it. It's [...]
The hardest challenge I face every day is working out which is my favourite Belle And Sebastian album. Tigermilk or If You're Feeling Sinister. If you ever see me looking confused then nine times out of ten, I will be contemplating this important issue. I'm sure no one else has this problem and I know that If You're Feeling Sinister is widely regarded as the fans favourite. I had already decided upon B&S as my second record purchase for reasons explained below but I had to decide. It went down to a flip of a coin. Tails for [...]
Hefner are a band I love. They mix brilliant indie pop tunes with lyrics that actually make you think. Darren Haymen's lyrics can make you laugh, leave you heartbroken and sometimes you are down right disgusted at all the sex this man gets. For the second installment of 'Side A, Track 1' I have the title track from my favourite Hefner album 'We Love The City'. I think most fans side with the Fidelity Wars as the most vital of their albums but I will always be a WLTC boy. The track opens [...]
Inspector Tapehead hail from Glasgow, Scotland and is a recording project and stripped-back live experience, engineered to move hearts and hinds. The group brings together former Adam Beattie's Consultants Chris Croasdale (guitar) and Roy Shearer (drums/percussion), with Jonnie Common of Down the Tiny Steps (keyboards). Besides that, I know very little. Inspector Tapehead - A Fillet Of Bozo A Fillet Of Bozo may be the closest I'll get to hearing folk post-rock. With [...]
Wild Beasts revealed a new song to the world yesterday (via Zane Lowe and other DJs - now on their myspace) and it's made a big impact. I've already seen some people say they are "hooting and howling" on a few social networks. Needless to say, our friendships have suddenly became a lot tighter. The best gig I've been to this year has been the boys from Kendal showcasing new songs, which really does say something about the strength of the new material. Domino has this to say about the new [...]
