Meteorite sighting

Pariisin Kevat - Samoilla Raiteilla
I swear something has happened to Finnish tap water in the 00's. After a gigantic drought of practically fuck all massively interesting ever happening, the 00's have brought out a ridiculous amount of quirky pop artists that do their completely own thing. The country's becoming a damn treasure trove at this rate. Slightly annoying that it's happening after I moved out, but there you go, that's life for you. I recently encountered Pariisin kevät in a very random way and they, or rather he as it's one of those one-man projects, have now proudly [...]

Hidden treasures: Sparklehorse

In these past few weeks, many things have been said about the wonderful career of one Mark Linkous AKA Sparklehorse , now sadly passed away suddenly. I am not a man who can write a good eulogy so I won't pretend I'm one either - he was a brilliant musician, had an amazing stretch of albums and touched many people's souls, including mine, in a very special and personal way. Nor is he a man who really needs a recommendatory retrospective - pick any of his four albums, you're bound to hit excellent stuff and any works as a [...]

Song dump

Songs! Individual songs! They're everywhere! The motion tracker is going crazy! Oh god, they're everywhere! Game over man, game over! Viola's March Melancholy Faithful as ever, the oh so lovely Viola have released a new song just as the new month turned its leaf. This one's called "Fade to White" and it's inspired by the bucketloads of snow we all first went all "ooh" and "aah" about but then it started delaying trains, crashing cars and canceling flights like crazy and all the beautiful magic of pure snow [...]

Something from RPM 2010

Something from RPM 2010 RPM is somewhat like a musician equivalent of the International Novel Writing Month. Each year in February musicians are invited to record and release a 35-minute, 10-song album during the 28 days of the year's shortest month. All the other criteria are entirely up to the musicians. Read more about it here , if you're so inclined. Kurrel is an Australian musician who has become one of my favourite internet-based musicians in the past few years. He's had many names throughout his adventures and dabbled in many styles, mainly frolicing somewhere amidsts [...]

Viola’s February Fun

Still continuing with their "song a month" project, it's Viola ! And to brighten up the cold February, here's a doo-do-do-do-doo-riffic piece of sunshiney pop rock about the joys of love and how your heart seems to as if burst into a song when the big crush happens. The song is called "Heart Breaks Into a Song" and it's all kinds of awesome - awesome sounds, catchy choruses, brilliantly self-aware-of-inherent-silline ss lyrics ("what the hell is going on?"), and all that! It's a must listen. Download it from here . And in case you missed [...]

The Melancholy of Others

Midlake - Acts of Man
If The Trials of Van Occupanther was a snapshot look at the lives of 1800's frontiermen, The Courage of Others has those same men sat around a fire on a cold night after retreating from a great disaster that's completely destroyed their lives, with their only hope being a glimpse of dying quickly but full well knowing that painful and long starvation is ahead of them. Perhaps that's a slight exaggeration but it does fairly nicely condense the general gist of Midlake 's latest - the band continues the [...]

Chill Yellow Moon

Fyfe Dangerfield : She Needs Me
Back down. Calm down. Change your expectations or, better yet, remove them completely. Fyfe Dangerfield might be the frontman of Guillemots who are experts on making life-affirming and gloriously grand pop songs. His debut solo album Fly Yellow Moon also piqued our interests with whopping three songs of similar kin: the radio preview "Faster Than the Setting Sun", the download freebie "When You Walk in the Room" and lead single "She Needs Me", each one showing Fyfe mastering his natural element. But if you were to go to Fly Yellow Moon expecting more of [...]

Fyfe Acousticfield

Hello and welcome to THE NEW YEAR! Everything cool? Cool. Let's get the IP train back a-starting. And because I simply know that you're all desperately waiting for the release day of Fyfe Dangerfield 's debut solo album, only a few days to go, here's a little something to bide the time over - an acoustic guitar + strings session featuring three songs from the album as well as a cover of some song by an obscure boy band or something. Clicky! In other news, all the [...]

Flint’s top 10 of 09: 5-1

Flint’s top 10 of 09: 5-1 And continuing from where we left off , our great TL;DR adventure continues with five more albums. 5. Wonderlick - Topless at the Arco Arena The miracles of blogging - I would have never found out about this amazing thing if it hadn't been featured on an article right here on this site. Topless is one of the spotlight hogs of [...]

Flint’s top 10 of 09: 10-6

Flint’s top 10 of 09: 10-6 Last time this year I was worrying about writing an annual top 10 albums list. There simply wasn't enough albums that I felt happy about including on the list, causing several entries to appear in the final list that wouldn't have even dreamed of making it on any other year. In other words, 2008 was disappointing . I'm worrying slightly again, wondering what on earth to include on this list and in what order. This time however it's for the completely opposite reason. 2009 has been a brilliant, brilliant year in music and as I choose to [...]

Merry Christmas from Jason Lytle

Merry Christmas from Jason Lytle Jason Lytle , he of previously Grandaddy and now of a brand new solo career, wants to wish each and every one of you (even you grumpy cynical sods) a merry Christmas through the medium of a 7-track instrumental piano EP full of songs with nothing to do with Christmas. You can download it here and it is indeed very lovely, very beautiful and very wonderful. In other news, Lytle is also in the process of writing material for his next solo album and he guarantees that "[it] will be the weirdest, [...]

Midlake - Children on the Ground
2010 is approaching soon. Twelve new months full of brand new music, from old veterans, young bands and complete upcomers. Just to go up-to-date on what's happening with the artists that pleasure Flint's tastebuds, it's time to give a little checkaround to 2010's possible offers by artists I'm intrigued about. Rumours, confirmed news, it's all here. Not keen on the artists I display? Give a sly prod at the other writers, maybe they'll reveal their musical stalking results as well? After the cut, a big list of various names. [...]

Viola’s December Delight – This Year It Will Be Different

Merry early Christmas! Viola' s December giveaway, a self-proclaimed sequel to their 2004 Christmas single, oozes the sort of wonderful warmth and magical happiness only Christmastime can bring. When the depressed verses switch to the ridiculously, almost tongue-in-cheek lovely choruses where soft drum machines tap-tap-tap along and bells and sprinkles fill the air, the duo manages to perfectly capture the wonderful fluffy feeling of the gorgeous season. This Year Will Be Different also marks the end of Viola's 2009 music club. Come January 2010 and we'll be treated to a whole [...]

Free digital taster doublewhammy: Apparatjik/Husky Rescue

It is a good day for people who enjoy good songs and have access to the internet, as two bands about to drop albums next year have now done the fashionable thing and released a free digital sample song from their forthcoming longplayers. And, quite frankly, it's rather easy to assume that one who likes one of the songs will also like the other one. Apparatjik is a supergroup (as they will be undoubtedly called) consisting of the ethereally wailing Mew frontman Jonas Bjerre, the cool and silent Coldplay bassist Guy [...]

The missing Prologue

This is the problem with grassroots bands who do not yet have a proper label (major or indie) backing: you get those moments where you begin to wonder if the band even exists anymore because there's no stable, easy information source. The Finnish band Prologue released their official debut release, The Stars Are Holes in the Sky EP in 2005. Two years later the Ghost Writing single followed, showing how in those two years the band had managed to add some stellar new sounds to their music. The world was preparing itself [...]

Red electr(on)ic light

Kent - Töntarna
One of the trends of the now-soon-ending decade has been The Electronic Sidestep. Throughout the decade guitar-based bands have been saying things such as "we got bored of guitars" or "we wanted to try something new" or even "we really dig that Aphex Twin dude so we just kinda got inspired", and each year there's been yet another notch in the wood for rock bands leaving their guitars behind and either started to focuse more on keyboards while decreasing the amount of their traditional instruments, or going as far as ditching the rock essence alltogether and beginning to [...]

Viola’s November niceness

One of those cases where the artist themselves describe the song much more adequately than any random blogger ever can: "The song has 9 parts but not a single one of them repeats the same vocal melody. Furthermore, the instrumentation is built with the idea that once an instrument enters the picture, it has to stay in until the end of the song, building layer after layer after layer of intertwining melodies and harmonies." More lovely melancholy moodiness from the lovely Finnish duo, perfect fit for this miserable rainy month. [...]

New Squirrelmusique

Squirrelhouse-Apocalypso
In a world where most grassroots bands tend to get shrugged off by this rather picky bastard, Squirrelhouse is one of those names that I've put in the back of my head. The debut SPQR is, whilst not flawless, a very enjoyable piece of music (and one worth getting a proper review someday when I stop being lazy) and the band has some really great stylistic assets in their arsenal that lifts them a step above so many other groups. The Texas band is now preparing to release their second album to the world, [...]

Sea Wolf sails on White Waters

Alex James Church is a nutter. When Stanislaus was released and I was all madly in love with it, I figured it would be an amazing taster from the new Sea Wolf album. Turns out it wasn't, it was just a session bonus track that won't be included on the album. Which brings us to today's question, why on earth not ? That said, it's not like White Water, White Bloom is without high points of its own, even if we're not getting the brilliant sophomore breakthrough we were [...]
