Checking my email a couple of days ago, I was greeted by a short and simple message from We Swim You Jump , a pop band from Groningen, Netherlands. They were offering their new self-titled EP for review consideration. I decided to take a listen and was pleasantly surprised. They compare their sound to the likes of Elliott Smith, Nada Surf and Rogue Wave. While I can't really disagree with them, they do have a lot of their own style. The EP really stands out from a lot of the stuff that's [...]

Indie Paws favourites and Leeds-based Grammatics have officially released details of their upcoming album on their email newsletter. The decided to call it 'Grammatics' and it will be released in March next year. They also included the tracklist for the album, which was consistent to my guesswork last week . Here's the tracklist in case you missed my earlier post. 1. Shadow Committee 2. D.I.L.E.M.M.A 3. Murderer 4. The Vague Archive 5. Broken Wing 6. Relentless Fours 7. Inkjet Lakes 8. Polar Swelling 9. Rosa Flood 10. Cruel [...]
As the year slowly wraps up, there seem to be a good number of artists I'm just discovering released amazing albums in 2008. Some of this, I'm sure is because they were just only released, the rest, well, just never hit the radar. I can promise that some of these artists are going to become huge in 2009, as they have a sound the fans love. So, we'll see just how wrong I am in about a year *laughs* And because it's (almost) present time, I'm doubling your dose of MP3s today. Enjoy (and remember to support the artists! :) [...]
So last time when we checked up on 2008 in full, we were on a pretty downbeat note. 2008 was full of small and minor disappointments and it showed. That doesn't however mean that there weren't any greatness in the year. Granted, there was very little superb greatness compared to many of the years before, but there were good things. A lot of flawed, but good things. And now it's the time to round them up. After the cut: the official Flinty top 10. [...]

While it's not my current locale, Akron, OH, is the place I now call home. It is, sadly, not a place well known for its hopping music scene (although nearby Blossom Music Center can sometimes bring a breath of fresh air). It is for this reason that Akron-based Low in the Sky have got me so excited. I came across this talented ensemble by chance while stumbling around the treasure trove that is Last.fm . Without even reading the band's biography, I had a listen and immediately grew attached. Academic responsibilities stole my attention at [...]
As the year comes to an end, I'm both excited about all the soon to be released projects from favorite bands, and stressed trying to whittle down and organize my top albums released this year. I figured that I'd take an opportunity with this Friday Fix to post a few songs that have already been bumped out of the top ten list, whether it be due to the fact I've only heard this particular song, or the album had some rough competition...or was released in previous years. So, enjoy and remember, if you like the song, support the artist! [...]

Grammatics (also known as 'that band Mag is obsessed with'), released their latest single ' The Vague Archive ' last month. It's is a re-recording of an older song from their Japan-only EP, but is now an album track from their upcoming full-length, and based on the quality of the single, I'm getting pretty excited for its release. What I really want to talk about today though is the remix b-side to the single. Remix b-sides aren't ever as good as original song b-sides. It's almost like a cheap way of filling the blank side of the vinyl; [...]
I'm interrupting the Indie Paws yearly retrospectives run (upcoming and planned ones) with a tiny bit of news that made me smile. In a recent Paste Magazine interview with Moby , whose this year's Last Night was good but a bit uneven, the artist himself talks a bit about a new album that he's already planning and hopes to release next year. What's made me somewhat excited (already!) is the brief discussion on the style of the next album - "something very personal, very melodic, very beautiful". While most of the man's albums have been [...]
Well dear readers, it's getting to be the end of the year now and there's no interesting releases on sight anymore (outside Viola's Melancholydisco 2 but that's a remix album anyway) and I've heard most of the new releases I wanted to hear this year (damn for randomly forgetting that new Hotel Lights album - I even posted news about it here ffs) so I guess I'm qualified to say something about this year by this time already. And 2008 in music, well, it was disappointing. Let's talk about that in a bit more detail. [...]
The hardest thing about making these posts is that I try to limit the number of songs to five. There is just SO much stuff buzzing through my ears that I'd love to post more. That takes time and would probably just make these posts intimidating and scare folks off. *grins* If you want me too make the Friday Fix contain a few more/less songs, leave comments for my consideration! For now, you'll get some of the best of what I've heard recently, some new, some old. So, on to the good stuff! [...]
Shortly after their debut the wonderful constantly-growing-synthier Viola (whose name has probably become familiar to you all already) released Melancholydisco , a remix album consisting of six remixes and four new songs - a remix album that's actually pretty damn good and consistent in style. This December the same trick is repeated: 19th of December Melancholydisco 2 sees the light of day, sporting four brand new tracks and six remixes out of the band's material from their past two albums from various Finns (including the lovely Regina ). As Viola tends to [...]
Finally! The amazingsupercute carebearstuffedanimal pop frolickers The Boy Least Likely To have finally announced a follow-up for their amazing 2005 gem The Best Party Ever that brought us such pieces of happygolucky music meets paranoia and mental anguish classics like "Be Gentle with Me" and "Hugging My Grudge". This past year we've been treated with several preview cuts from the album and now the release date, name, tracklist AND cover are clear. So, on March 3rd 2009, a surely wonderful little album called The Law of the Playground will see the light of [...]
Matt Pond PA is an awesome group from Philadelphia, PA who have just released a free EP on their website. This release really came out of nowhere, but was eagerly absorbed into my MP3 library. Packing 9 full length songs into an EP really seems longer than most albums these days, but every number is enjoyable. Backing Matt Pond's beautifully sad sounding vocal tracks are some equally impressive instrumental ones. They say the best way to get someone hooked, is to give them stuff for free. Do yourself a favor, and get hooked on Matt Pond PA by [...]
We just noticed that our precious download links aren't working! We're checking up on it and try to fix things up as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and apologies for the inconvenience. Update: It appears that streaming from The Hype Machine works fine, despite this problem. We're still working to resolve it! Update 2: Things should be working again. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday, well, those that observe it. I know that I'll be enjoying my vacation time these next few days, checking out new music online and at the local music shops :3 School of Seven Bells - Connjur (2008). Another great band from Brooklyn, New York, School of Seven Bells brings us this wonderful track off of "Alpinism". Benjamin Curtis (from "Secret Machines"), serves as the bassist and vocalist for this band, leaving me curious to know how much time he's investing on the Secret Machines [...]
