We all have enough plenty of mp3's in our collections, but what about books? My Morning Jacket 's Jim James has some recommendations if you're looking for a new read. Be Here Now by Ram Dass (Three Rivers, $15). I was given this book at a point in my life when I needed it most. I digested its meditations on consciousness and spiritual identity, and knew I had met a lifelong friend. "Be here now." What else needs to be said? The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and [...]

It's been a rather long wait, but the new album Power is finally here! It's more accessible than the debut because there's not QUITE as throbbing, but don't expect anything soft: these tracks are meant for the dancefloor. There doesn't seem to be much entity, so pretty much all the tracks can stand on their own. The album is streaming at MySpace , but see below for tour dates (click image to enlarge) and a couple mp3's: [...]

The blisteringly lo-fi rock trio is back with their fourth full-length in four years, and while it might not be the best one to start with for a newcomer (that would probably be Rip It Off ), Born Again Revisited is a quality addition to Times New Viking's growing catalog. Sticking to their usual instruments (drums, guitar, keyboard, double vocals) and signature ultimate-garage sound, Born Again is another complete work from a band that, in short, knows what they're doing. It's a widespread album, but not in the sense that it has a [...]

Here is the video of Kid Cudi's performance from Friday night on the Late Show with David Letterman. Cudi makes a bold statement by choosing his 3rd single, titled "Pursuit Of Happiness" , so close to the September 15th release date. Cudi's first lines from the song : "Crush A Bit; Little Bit; Roll It Up; Take A Hit Feelin' Lit". Seems like he would promote either "Day N Night" or "Make Her Say" to appeal to the more mainstream crowd watching late night television. Regardless, we get to see Kid and Ratatat performing this song live for the [...]

I deserve some serious punishment for not posting this earlier. This mixtape is simply monster. With Don Cannon on production, those minimal beats we thought were trademark Cool Kids have been put on hold (until When Fish Ride Bicycles maybe..), giving way to a richer, more complete sound. And lyrically it simply soars. I couldn't speak more highly of this album -- it's their best to date and warrants infinity listens. Oh and guess what? It's free at whenfishridebicycles.com . mp3: Marina & The Diamonds - "I Am Not A Robot" (Penguin Prison Remix) I heard the original version yesterday on YouTube along with it's enchanting music video , and to be honest, I didn't like it that much. Mostly it's just not my style: the instrumentation is bland, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I'd just rather listen to this busy ass remix. The instrumental is completely redone, creating this groovy electro thing that fits the song a lot better than the original in my opinion. Even though this track isn't [...]
A very nice ambient electronic work. Hear it in full here , where there's a lengthy description and a handful of other content including an artistic music video for the song "Tam", much like the "White Ink" video for Deerhunter I posted a while back. LJ Kruzer's new album is now available in all good retail outlets, both physical cd and digital formats, or buy it direct from us and get both together. Those nice folk over at the wire magazine have two exclusive reworkings of a couple of album tracks [...]
It's always nice to hear relaxing music surrounding all the crazy new stuff coming out these days. This one's from Anomie Bell, a classically trained violinist. Julija at Aurgasm witnessed her set at Bumbershoot, so I'll let her do the talking: We started our morning with the hypnotic strings and vocals of Anomie Belle. Anomie Belle is classically trained violinist and songwriter Toby Campbell, who toured North America with such artists as Little Dragon, The Album Leaf and legendary trip-hop artist Tricky. "Down", featured here, displays her Trip-Hop experimental aesthetics, while its [...]

Following the trend, here's another minimal techno number I came across on hypem. Synth and vocal interjections top a mechanical backbeat, forming a relatively relaxing six minute composition... relaxing except for the insistent "you make me mad" lyric. This track was getting mad <3 at the hype machine. Astronomer uses the vocals as a starting point, speeds them up, and runs with them. It's an electro/techno remix but in minimal fashion. It's not over the top or anything, it sounds very natural. The original was just begging for a remix, and here's a good one! mp3: Metronomy - "Not Made For Love" (Astronomer remix) Metronomy has a new EP coming out September 21st, and Astronomer has one in the works. Make sure to check them [...]

Emily Parliman at CMJ hit this band's one-line description head on when she described them as "metal-edged post-rockers", only she forgot to mention they are all-instrumental. Russian Circles played Bonnaroo this year to a small crowd of about 200 late at night, and boy was it awesome. They naturally bridge sharp, adrenaline-pumping metal with beautiful post-rock sound-scapes, making for a sweet combination that is surprisingly unique. Geneva , out October 20 on Suicide Squeeze / Sargent House , is the band's third full-length. Here's the tracklist : 01. [...]

A lot of people are diggin' this new Toro y Moi track, for good reason. Smoothly driven vocals echo over intricate beats blending hip-hop and indietronica, making a lot of other songs just seem bland. Just discovered Nudge and surprised they're not more popular because they're just so inventive. I haven't had a chance to listen to their new album As Good As Gone (out on Kranky ), which was just reviewed over at Pitchfork, but I'm streaming their old one via Rhapsody and it's sensational. They vary the pace a lot, but I'd categorize their music as shoegaze/trip-hop with a lot of quirky things going on at the same time, making it rather avant-garde. You can grab a few mp3s at their Kranky artist [...]
