While surfing through Facebook today I noticed a YouTube link to The Bacon Brothers on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn Ferguson. Apparently Kevin Bacon not only can dance and act, but he sings and plays guitar? And he's good at it? Quite the renaissance man if you ask me. Apparently they've been playing since 1995 as a "band," and have 5 or so albums released . The Bacon Brothers New Year's Day , [...]

Recently I was playing some scrabble, drinking some wine, and listening to Neil Young's Harvest Moon. The song "Old King" came on, and while listening to the lyrics, I felt to urge to make the statement, "You know, some of my favorite songs are about hound dogs." Yes, I'm openly admitting that I actually said that out loud. Well, I was very quickly called out on this statement, and my scrabble opponent demanded I named three songs about dogs that I even liked. As it happens, the only two I had at my disposal were "Old King" and J.J. Cale's [...]
I mentioned yesterday that I'd be featuring some of the artists from Summer Meltdown here on the site, and what better way to start than with the hosts themselves: Flowmotion. I've been listening to a live recording of the band's 4/18/2009 show at the Fillmore in San Francisco, and the band played what sounds to like a spot-on set, with plenty of funk thrown in the mix to keep people dancing. Perfect for a festival headliner. Check out the following streamed mp3s courtesy of Archive.org. "Free" has a great laid-back jazz groove that reminds me of ALO a little bit, [...]
In anticipation of the late summer festivals out here in Washington, I wanted to highlight a few that I'll be headed to. Aside from Phish at the Gorge from August 7-8th, I plan on heading to the 9th annual Summer Meltdown in Darrington, WA from August 14th-16th. Summer Meltdown focuses on pacific coast acts, with the lineup almost exclusively made up of bands from Washington, Oregon, and California. Highlights that I'm familiar with include the hosts, Seattle-based Flowmotion, as well as The Everyone Orchestra from Portland, The Panda Conspiracy from the Seattle area, the Staxx Brothers of [...]
The first leg of Phish's summer tour has come to an end, and while I couldn't make it to any of the shows - most of them were quite a hike from Washington - I'll be headed to the Gorge in August for the band's Friday and Saturday shows. I'm eager to see what the band pulls out for leg two, especially since Phish's new album appears to be coming out in late July right before the band kicks off the second leg of the tour at Red Rocks. But, the magic of Phish 3.0 is that you [...]

Artist: The Staxx Brothers Album: We Are The Blaxstonz Release: May 2009 A personal favorite of mine from Bumbershoot 2008, Seattle's The Staxx Brothers are just about to release their second album, We Are The Blaxstonz . Their first album, 2008's 12th Street Blues , was a very soulful collection, but the band returns with a tighter groove and more focused effort this time around. The band, which features four vocalists and four instrumentalists, makes it apparent from the start that vocals [...]

For those of you looking for a way to combine your political passions with the current Halloween season and some free live music, you may be interested in Trick or Vote .?? Trick or Vote is a nationwide nonpartisan costume canvass taking place on Halloween in a city near you.?? After a few hours of get-the-vote-out canvassing I'm told that most of the cities will have an after party, complete with (free) local live music . The Eugene, OR event kicks off the festivities this Sunday the 26th, and I hear it even has [...]

After tens and likely hundreds of thousands of people got shut out of tickets for Phish's March 2009 return shows, both during presale and this morning's Ticketmaster stampede, a petition has emerged online to encourage the band the simulcast the upcoming shows in movie theaters nationwide.?? The band has a precedent of doing this for concerts in the past such as Coventry , and DVD releases like Brooklyn 2004 .?? Anyways, after scheduling their comeback show in a venue with approximately 12,000 capacity despite hundreds of thousands of people trying to get the tickets, and scalpers claiming between [...]
Panjea, the african rhythm band led by Chris Berry who has toured for a couple years now with Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident, is giving away a free album featuring live tracks from their summer tour.?? I had a chance to see these guys at Summer Camp 2006 and interview them for Burning Oak, unfortunately none of the footage from the interview turned out to be usable, which was fairly devastating at the time, I assure you.?? Anyways, head over to www.panjeamusic.com/signup.htm and fill in your information for their mailing list, and you'll be treated to tracks [...]

Artist: Rodriguez Album: Cold Fact Label: Light In The Attic I got wind of this vinyl reissue today from the folks at Light In The Attic , a record label in my newly adopted home of Seattle, and I thought checking out the album would be a good way to get acquainted with the happenings in my new scene. The album, originally released in 1970, slides back and forth between a Motown vibe during tracks like "Sugar Man" and "I Wonder" and psychedelic rock à la The Doors [...]
