revise

revise James Blake - CMYK (eldoko bootleg) Jimmy Blake is going to make us all cry in a month or so when his LP drops, but before then, I'd like to revisit the seminal, CMYK, responsible for spurring many funny jokes on twitter based on "finding so and so's red coat". Feeling a bit conflicted about this version, as it cuts out some of the buildup that the original has- but instead, it trades in Blake's unexpected track progression with something a bit more dancefloor friendly, complete with that funny "hissing [...]

No Title Femme en Fourrure - Altered Thomas Bootleg Edit Finishing off a big 2010, Helsinki natives F&F give you a crispy re-edit of 3rd Face's 'Canto Della Liberta' ( Renaissance Man did something similar at the end of 2009 ) and Altered Natives's "Voyage". I heartily encourage more DJs to give away their edits in a show of festive goodness. It's so cold here in Osaka that I think my NYE plans are just going to involve playing wii with a select few other folks inside, but I hope you have [...]

best of 2010, pt. 2

best of 2010, pt. 2 Part 1 is here. Well, shit. Here we are in 2011. To be honest, thoroughly plumbing the depths of 2010's labels and artists to try and distill the essence of whatever this year was all about seems not only difficult, but essentializing. So instead, here's a dumb list with some good music. The best thing that happened in 2010: - I think it was this. [...]

Things I loved about 2010: Staccato piano arrangements 90's house vocalists sous-vide cooking (thanks Alex!) and appreciating fine French red wines (thanks Jules!) in San Francisco Jamie xx, garage and 2-step 90's house revivalism and "more organic" dance music disco resurgence (or weird late 70's- early 80's disco revivalism) artful, exquisite chopping and stuttering (work that MPC) ( white ) avant-garde mise-en-valeur of commercial hip-hop and r&b production (merci So Bones & companie) Craigslist hooking [...]

doodle

doodle Lil Wayne - I'm Single (Renaissance Man Bootcut) Weezy and Renaissance Man kinda outdo everything that I love about SALEM in one fell swoop. The eerieness is maybe a bit more heightened in SALEM, but the angsty relationship rap, the sparse, echoey percussion and the stellar buildup make this one more reason reaffirming that the hybrid, definition-less way dance music is moving is nothin' but fantastic.

Just...better

Just...better M ore of a "mutant disco edit" or "final edit" than a full-on remix, Jacques Renault speeds the record, keeps the infectious staccato piano, reverbs the deliciously cheesy space disco vocals around the room, kicks up the drums, and voila, a floor burner. Midnight Magic - Beam Me Up (Jacques Renault remix) (via rcrd lbl)

art is confusing

art is confusing Hennessy Youngman - 7 Minutes in Henny (No Homo) Hennessey Youngman is artist Jayson Scott Musson from Plastic Little's thug philospher alter persona. I loved Plastic Little a few years ago, they were kind of like pre-Das Racist Das Racist. Following the trend of releasing youtube videos about post structuralism , Bruce Nauman , race politics and lots of fitted hats with Boba Fett, Spongebob, Goofy, and other thuggin' iconography, here's a free rap album about Ryan McGinley, white people, and lots [...]

Best of 2010 pt. 1

Best of 2010 pt. 1 2010 is over! I enjoyed it lots, though I feel like my blog posts are only half-coherent these days. Here's a list of some of the things I've enjoyed. Thanks for reading Gosh Damn. Thoughts on music in 2010: - It was confusing. Everyone seemed to be splitting into sub genres, and 'minimal tech house' kinda collapsed on itself a bit. At the same time, all that diversity meant that thousands of producers kept pushing music in dizzying, amazing genre defying directions. 2010 felt wildly unpredictable, which at times was exhilirating, and at [...]

klassey

klassey Luca Lozano - Heaven & Hell Out on Klasse in January 2011... which seems way too late because hearing this preview makes me want this song now. Also, is it true that this sample is from " Jenny From The Block " and not a more credible, obscure soul song from the 70s? If so, I really need to give J-Lo some more credit I guess. I'm making a list of my favorite stuff from 2010 now that should be up in a bit, and I really wish [...]

walking through the doorway of a nation

walking through the doorway of a nation Yazoo - Situation (Aids 3D Slowed Mix) (direct link) Oh, was that slowing things down by 800% trend played out in early 2010? Too bad, because this re-edit of Yazoo is seriously making me fall over on the floor and convulse on my totomi mat. Yes, it sounds fantastic, and if you're hating on this you probably have a tough life because you must also hate the laughter of children, ecstasy (the feeling, not the drug), and warm vibrant dancefloors filled with all your best friends. And that [...]

changes

changes Smolny & SLG - Turnaround Hey guys, don't feel like your names have to be legible or make any sense whatsoever, iz cool. Aside from the fact that "Smolny" sounds like a villain from the Carebears movie, this is fantastic throwback dance music. Sampling Farley "Jackmaster" Funk's canonical "Love Can't Turn Around", Poland seems to be going through somewhat of an explosion of talent lately (also see: Catz'n'Dogs). You can buy the instrumental here , but apparently if you're one of those evil people who plays digital music, you're out of [...]

id plz

id plz Gil Scott-Heron f. Nas - New York Is Killing Me (?? remix) I think New York is a pretty nice place to live. Except that now, in 2010, living in New York now does not make you much of anything. (Living anywhere doesn't make you much of anything, maybe.) Anyway, I like that the beat kinda sounds like Joe's "Claptrap" from Hessle Audio, and that it's pretty laidback even though Nas starts off with a very apt "New York is fast, how can I compare?", you don't feel lost or [...]

good night

good night Azari & III - Into The Night (Nicolas Jaar Remix) via xlr8r WOAAAH MAMA! This is serious. If the Wolf + Lamb free-ep of re-edits from Jaar somehow didn't sell you on this fantastic downtempo house revisionist thing, then this track should do the trick effortlessly. Love how the buildup is so slight and non-immense, but how the whole time you're just effortlessly sucked in.

girl thang

girl thang A1 Bassline - Girl Thing (Christian Martin Remix) First off, some critical reading on the subject of nu vogue: Shayne Oliver of Hood By Air from The Free Library So, it's true, we haven't really heard the name A1 Bassline mentioned since the days when describing a track as "wonky wobblestep" was considered a good thing. But after hearing this ting on a May 2009 mix that Martin made, I was instantly hooked. Banjee vocals about shoe shopping and boys hollering at you, matched with weird spacious [...]

A bunch of Russian teenagers trying to cut each other's throats and bludgeon each other with golf clubs. cats and dogs and channel and channel and channel

cats and dogs and channel and channel and channel Gamal Kabar - The Filth (Catz 'N Dogz Remix) Formerly C&D went by 3 Channels, but it's like, once someone changes their name, even if you're playing an old song by them, you still have to call them by their new name, right? Or do you... is pre-2001 Diddy still called "Puff Daddy"? I'm sure there've been many deep philosophical trolling sessions on the internt on this topic. Regardless, love the droning ping-pong fuckery feeling of this track, it's easy to get lost in. Bonus: Download The Catz N [...]

bjorf Kasper Bjorke & His Friendly Ghost - Go Away Song (Holtoug Remix) Acquire it here Ooh, techy but melodramatic enough to work for those dance clubs that are all "posh" and "class" and "respectable" and where no one ever dances, paradoxically enough. Somehow, Kasper Bjorke has always been associated with "serious dance music" in my mind, which is a lot less fun than people who make stupid dance music that's really addictive and catchy. But this side project on Compost [...]
