High Places - Dry Lake (Urulu's Backroom Edit) Urulu made waves this week with a remix of LA-based indie duo High Places , sending washed-out vocals from Mary Pearson to groovy new lengths. The duo's bass-heavy foundation and soaring melodies are given room to breathe on the mix, extending the original version by two minutes, and the result is nothing short of the lightfooted, tasteful output we've come to expect from the up-and-coming producer. Head to Urulu's SoundCloud to stream and download the re-edit, and check out the original as part of [...]

Salva - Obsession ft. B. Bravo Frite Nite bossman Salva , based in San Francisco, has been on fire in 2011, first coming out with a stellar and diverse debut album in February's Complex Housing and back with another knockout in next month'sYellobone EP. Second track "Obsession," featuring Frite Nite buddy B. Bravo, is a pretty good taste of what's to come: irresistible funk, fuzzy nostalgia and a hearty serving of bass that will hit you in your core.

Absent Fever - Exquisite Corpse After a few months of organizing and production, Absent Fever has released a collaboration under a theme beyond belief. The collab includes a gripping connection between 7 artists from the AF family including Kynan, Gracie, Birkwin Jersey, Wonder Bear, Ra Cailum, Galapagos, and Guerre. Each artist takes part, lending their imagination while deeply composing a momentous minute for the 7 minute track. Accompanying the soundscape is a film by Library Voices and artwork by Brian Vu. Absent Fever couldn't describe it any better: [...]
At no time shy of an alternate persona, David Kennedy (Ramadanman/Maurice Donovan/Pearson Sound) has kept us all guessing as to what his next move will be. The rather youthful Brit has become a world renowned icon, not only for the foundation of Hessle Audio, but also as an impeccable turntablist. His newest efforts come way of a throwback house tune under the Maurice Donovan moniker."Call My Name" is a sequenced, 4/4 beat that carries along through step-progressive percussion reminiscent of 902s samplers and early table-top synthesizers. The single is now available as a white label 123 via Phonica Records [...]

Rebel Podcast: Ricky Eat Acid Baltimore-based experimentalist Ricky Eat Acid (birthed Sam Ray) has quickly become a common name around the Rebel office. This may be in-part due to the young producer's metamorphosis of genres, keen interpretation of pop music, unorthodox method of production, or merely the fact that he's only 20 years of age. Whatever it may be, we don't want "it" to leave anytime soon, so we've brought Sam into the Rebel family and have inaugurated him with his very own podcast - just 20 tracks short. Tracklisting 01. Heroes of the Microphone - Blanche Blanche Blanche: [...]

Liar - Lichborn EP Russian born label Gimme5 as been a staple this year for harboring quality, previously-unheard-of artists through an outlet of free expressionism. Their newest onset, exported through Romanian-based producer Liar , comes fitted for the dark inhabitants of the blogosphere. Large, orchestral pads, deep, grudgy synth-work, and panning machinery stutter through each track, making Lichborn one of G52s more uninterrupted releases. Not to mention the contemporary pop samples hidden between a few of the singles. We'll let you spot those out on your own. Release date set for November 11th. [...]

Daphni , aka Dan Snaith, aka Caribou , launches his new label, Jiaolong. This isn’t his first try under the disco-funk alias; he has two releases out on the Resista label under the name Daphni, and they are both otherworldly. This limited 12” comprises of three tracks one of which, ‘Yes I know’, was featured on his Resident Advisor podcast. The a-side features a revision of Togolese monster hit, ‘Ne Noya’, from afro-beat sensations, Cos-Ber-Zam, and it falls into a dancehall afro-beat number that gets treatment from Dan’s ingenious electronic orchestrations and syncopations. The releases' [...]

Kodak To Graph - He / Basement Taken off the Florida-based experimentalists' recent Visio'l EP , "He / Basement" has made this rather overcast day quite enjoyable. Michael Maleki - better known under the pseudonym Kodak To Graph - was last heard of back when we introduced him here , now the solo artist has returned with an entire EP made available for free download. You can grab the release, as well as an interview, over on Bad Panda's music page .
Tyler, The Creator was in Toronto last week with his crew when he met up with Badbadnotgood to record a live session. A Toronto post-bop jazz trio, Badbadnotgood are garnering attention for their hip-hop covers, including arrangements for the likes of Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka . The three Humber College students bonded over their mutual dissatisfaction with traditional jazz, and out of that frustration rose this amazing hip-hop/jazz fusion project. The video for "Seven" captures these young musicians in a graffiti-marked basement with Tyler. The unhinged, purposely beaten tones of their instrumentals serve [...]

Drake - The Real Her (Ft. Lil Wayne) Partying has never sounded so depressing. With the recent release of Drake 's rap tracks off of Take Care, we've been refreshed with yet another stunning RnB ballad along the same lines as "Marvin's Room" and "Trust Issues". Lil Wayne's part surprisingly doesn't distract from the song, but it can definitely do without that giggling.

Heems - I Want It Bad Heems of Das Racist announced a solo mixtape with Mike Finito, tentatively titled Nehru Jackets, to be released 1/1/2012 (with mixtapes from bandmates Kool A.D. and Dapwell dropping the same day). He recently posted an unconfirmed tape addition,"I Want It Bad", on his tumblr page . Heems' version of a love song, "I Want It Bad" samples Twin Sister's "Bad Street" while Heems goes on about his heart going stupid, dumb, ham and numb. And, as per usual, Finito's hard-hitting production is on point, a trend we see with [...]

Chairlift - Sidewalk Safari We had such high hopes for Chairlift 's new album after listening to their single "Amanaemonesia" and weren't too sure what to expect next. Lucky for us, the duo didn't disappoint. Singer Caroline Polachek's pop vocals shine most on "Sidewalk Safari", expressing a combination of whimsy highs and profound lows. There's so much jazz going on, it's unreal. Check out the video for "Amanaemonesia" below.

Sepalcure - I'm Alright In preparation for their upcoming, self titled, full-length, Brooklyn-originated forward thinkers Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma (Sepalcure) offer up a free download of their latest crafted single, "I'm Alright." Taken off the b-side of Sepalcure's forthcoming Pencil Pimp EP , 'I'm Alright' doesn't lean too far away from the duo's two-stepping roots. Grab the track above then head over to catch their recent interview with Boiler Room .

Grimes - Oblivion Claire Boucher is on a roll; hot on the heels of two LPs and one split EP with d'Eon released over the past two years, the 23 year-old Montreal musician / producer known as Grimes has just released a taste of her upcoming album Visions . Produced entirely in the preloaded Apple recording software GarageBand, "Oblivion" sounds like it could be a radio hit in some parallel cultural universe. It's the most focused piece of music that she has released to date and it comes as no [...]

Birdy - Shelter (Essáy's Tearful Edit) Uk-based experimentalist Essáy debuts his latest rework for fellow Brit musician/singer/songwriter Birdy (Jasmine Van den Bogaerde). The edit, carefully titled "tearful," uses Bogaerde's vox over a 10 minute frame of looped piano stabs, large atmos pads, and vocoded stutters. You can download the nostalgia imprinted edit via the soundcloud link above.

Most of this footage was shot during the end of Foxes in Fiction's stay in California. We experienced the unpredictable ups and downs of SoCal life as we visit burrito joints, coffee shops, local parks, and even a historic cemetery. Interesting side note: We snuck into that pool (literally located 5 feet away from the cemetery), and a black cat was glaring at us the whole time. Spooked for days.
