Although I have yet to hear the whole LP from Antony and the Johnsons, I will go out on the limb and tell you that he has once again succeeded on all accounts. What I have heard has been worth the wait. Some much love and hurt, discovery, emotion, and expressive imagery, that you don't know if you should smile or weep. His voice alone is yet another character upon himself...it's as if Antony has become two; his flesh and his soul. The third LP, The Crying Light , will be available on January 20th. Antony had this to [...]

I wrote about Forest Fire back in '06 on TPATS , and to me their sound has changed quite a bit since then. Thankfully someone else with some resources took notice of this band from Brooklyn and put out a cd this past year. The album, Survival , the label, our friends at Cat Bird Records , which is a perfect fit if you ask me. I came across Forest Fire like I said in '06, but it was only because band member Adam Spittler told me about them, since I was in [...]

O' Death's third album, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin , came out a few months ago on Kemado Records and tracks have been recently popping up on the iTunes, so I thought I'd mention it here. So many things came out last year that I didn't get a chance to write about due to my hiatus from the P&S, and this is one of them. I was blown away by O' Death's Head Home , and was pleasantly surprised to hear an even more invigorated band with a sort of crooked smile ornery [...]

I've posted from the Planet Claire Sessions for numerous artists over the years and was pleasantly surprised that I found Alela Diane on there a while back. The session is from October 24, 2007, so a little over a year ago, but these tracks are still up close and intimate, and I've been listening to them ever since my post about her upcoming album a few days ago. They are worth the listen. Enjoy. (mp3) Tired Feet (mp3) Pieces of String (mp3) [...]
I never heard of this site, but I am quickly becoming a fan. They state that, " The Secret Stereo is a place where you can find free, downloadable MP3 EP's from some of the most exciting musicians around today. The songs might be studio recordings, album outtakes, out-of-print releases, rarities, live performances, demos, collaborations, or remixes." Each artist has an "ep" of sorts on the site and below are three tracks from three separate artists that have preformed for the site. I highly recommend you visiting for more exclusive tracks. [...]
I came across a three song live set by one of my favorite bands of 2008, Fleet Foxes . The tracks and videos have been out since March of 08, but if you haven't heard this live set, I highly recommend you heading over to get it. Below is one of the three tracks and an HD video of the performance. The other two songs/videos are over at It's Hard to Find a Friend ; and while you're there look around b/c it's a great blog and maybe pick up their charity cd : Peace on [...]

Oh, my...What do you get when you cross the amazing talents of Drakkar Sauna with the songs of country legends The Louvin Brothers (Ira and Charlie Louvin)...you get perfection. Released on Marriage Records , Drakkar Sauna put forth Wars and Tornadoes: Drakkar Sauna Faithfully Sings Songs of The Louvin Brothers . Easily one of their best releases to date. The reason why you ask; it's because DS actually plays this one straight forward, no humor, no wackiness, just pure American Country / Bluegrass backwoods hymns. There is such a devotion here, such [...]

I'll dance with you, I'll laugh with you...Sufjan Stevens has once again released a Christmas EP to family and friends, and while VI & VII hasn't made wide spread noise over the years, VIII seeped it's way into the WWW and it's blowing up the lines. Enjoi... (mp3) Christmas in the Room Follow the trail of goodies: Admire some cat at Christmas Time and be rewarded as you open the last window on our Advent...

If you have frequented the P&S from time to time you'd know that Alela Diane has been on my list of favorites for a while now. Her critically acclaimed 2006 debut, The Pirate's Gospel , was one of the best albums of that year and now with Beggars Group , she has a new disc out in February of '09 titled To Be Still . Diane has a voice that cuts through to the soul. She possesses the warmth you need on those cold nights; she ruptures the ground in which she walks [...]

I came across this when I was over at AK earlier in the holiday and have had it on ever since in my Christmas playlist and I thought I'd post it here. Enjoy...oh, and Happy Holidays... From Chris Schlarb, We didn't have much money this year so we started a tradition instead. Every year, as a family, we will try to make a short Christmas album with everyone contributing. This year, we got a little Fragile with it. We have tunes as a family, and tunes [...]

I first heard of Josh Tillman when I got a hold of one of the limited releases (limit 150) of Long May You Run, J. Tillman and was blown away. Think Neil Young meets Will Oldham meets Whiskeytown. Anyway, J. Tillman (a member of Fleet Foxes if you didn't know) now has a new LP out entitled, Vacilando Territory Blues The below track, "Steel on Steel", is off this new release and the entire album is currently available on iTunes, but if you want it in your hands, it's not officially released until January 20, 2009. After [...]
Poetry may be the only way to describe the music that couple, Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique make on their Self Titled release for Asthmatic Kitty. With the help of Sufjan Stevens, Welcome to the Welcome Wagon unlocks the doors of their sanctuary and invites the public in to be washed over with their simple hymns of love of God and each other. Pre-album, I picture these two around a fire place on a rug in a humble home or family gathering, with Vito strumming a swapmeet guitar and Monique tapping out time on the table, singing [...]
