Gibson Amphitheatre to close in September

Gibson Amphitheatre to close in September The Gibson Amphitheatre , the venue on the Universal Studios lot that has hosted major concerts for more than 40 years, will be shuttered in September to make room for a new attraction at the theme park, promoter Live Nation announced today. A lineup of special farewell shows is planned, the promoters added, noting that concerts planned for after the Gibson's lease expires this fall will be moved to other venues. The 6,000-plus capacity theater, originally an outdoor venue known as the Universal Amphitheatre, has hosted a Hall of Fame-worthy roster of artists over the years, as well [...]

Stream: Derde Verde, ‘Secret’

Stream: Derde Verde, ‘Secret’ On it's 2011 full-length "Moon/Mirror," L.A. trio Derde Verde displayed an idiosyncratic mix of influences characterized by warm textures, shape-shifting rhythms and oddly compelling song structures. The restrained, almost inscrutable indie rock made by Jon Schwarz, Dylan McKenzie and Matthias Wagner adds another chapter with their "Let Me Be a Light" EP , which for all its post-rock tendencies is sprinkled with some pretty intense lyrical imagery. The single "Secret" does a lot with a little — an off-kilter guitar riff that vaguely recalls Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," a dramatic slow build and a crescendo [...]

Download: The Reflections, ‘In Another Life’

Download: The Reflections, ‘In Another Life’ The Reflections , the L.A.-based duo comprised of Darian Zahedi and Jon Safley (who you may recognize as the drummer for Bleached), first beckoned us with their summery dream-pop in "Summer Days." Since then, the Reflections have established their ability to straddle the line between romantic haze and the roar of anthemic Brit-rock. Their new single "In Another Life" off of their forthcoming debut "Limerance" is another fantastic example as the drums beckon closely behind Zahedi's vocals in the beginning measures. Before you know it, you're swimming in their echoing reverb and wrapped in the cooing harmonies that seem to [...]

Video: Torches, ‘When You Gonna’

TORCHES - "When You Gonna" (Official Video)
Music videos from Torches have always had dark tone to them, but everything from the creepy "Dirt & Tears" video to the morbid "I Want Something" clip have piqued our interest enough to watch them all the way through to the end. In their new Ron Santarsiero-directed visual accompaniment to their latest single "When You Gonna," things aren't as gruesome. However, that doesn't mean the cult in this clip gets through without some bruises, physically and mentally. Featuring an all-girl cast, (Azad Cheikosman and Eric Fabbrothere are merely passers-by) a throw-down ensues. Torches follows up 20122s debut "Heads Full [...]

Coachella 2013: A sweltering but fantastic finish to two weekends of music and merriment in the desert

Coachella 2013: A sweltering but fantastic finish to two weekends of music and merriment in the desert Coachella 2013 did not go quietly into the night — Red Hot Chili Peppers provided the festival-ending fireworks on a steamy day that offered none of the calamity of the previous weekend's windstorm-plagued Sunday. If you were lucky, you caught Father John Misty dispensing some knowledge from a lawn chair, or Vampire Weekend rocking it from the main stage, or veterans Dinosaur Jr. and Social Distortion roaring away like kids. Photographer Scott Dudelson sent along this mini-gallery, then (hopefully) enjoyed a cool drink.

Gallery: Purity Ring and Blue Hawaii at the El Rey

Gallery: Purity Ring and Blue Hawaii at the El Rey Considering they have a name like Purity Ring , lo-fi electronic R&B partners Megan James and and Corin Roddick of Edmonton put on quite the sensual show Thursday at the El Rey Theatre. Although the Canadian duo made the Coachella bill this year, people still flocked to the L.A. venue fopr a provocative experience in support of the duo's highly regarded debut "Shrines." Like the record, the band's visual setup presented a shrouded eeriness. Between the echoes and the artistically clever set-up of luminous cocoons, Roddick's "tree lantern" and James' mounted kick drum — that both lit up dramatically when [...]

Coachella 2013: Action Bronson celebrates 4/20 by showering crowd with bottles of weed during set

Coachella 2013: Action Bronson celebrates 4/20 by showering crowd with bottles of weed during set Action Bronson's afternoon set at Coachella on Saturday was much more about the party than the performance — and like any good dude hosting a bash on April 20, the Queens rapper brought an abundance of weed to the Outdoor Theatre. A few songs into his set, the man born Arian Asllani brought onstage a trash bag full of green medicine bottles and started hurling them, one by one, into the overheated crowd. (The two bottles nearby lads caught were a variation called "Thunder Kitty.") The rapper's generosity created quite a scrum, exacerbated later when [...]

Coachella 2013: Saluting Boston, catching the scent of 4/20 and other highlights from a sweaty Saturday

Coachella 2013: Saluting Boston, catching the scent of 4/20 and other highlights from a sweaty Saturday The serious collided with the ridiculous on Saturday at Coachella , a day festival-goers got constant reminders of the week's real-world events while losing their inhibitions to otherworldly temptations. Throughout the Empire Polo Field, many attendees wore Boston gear in a show of solidarity with the city victimized by last week's terror attack. Celtic punkers the Dropkick Murphys launched their set with "For Boston," playing to fans largely bedecked in green, but all was not so reverential. It was, after all, 4/20, and that spirit was in the air too, especially at rapper Action Bronson's afternoon set, during which [...]

Coachella 2013: Heat’s turned up, crowds dialed down as Jurassic 5 helps Friday end in a Blur

Coachella 2013: Heat’s turned up, crowds dialed down as Jurassic 5 helps Friday end in a Blur Coachella roared into its second weekend Friday — in many ways the same as the first installment, but in some ways different. Overall, crowds were less barrel-you-over intense (ah, civility) on the less-congested but markedly warmer festival grounds. It was as if everybody had shown up for music class, and had done their homework to boot. Blur, in the main-stage headline slot, were again strong, and both the Stone Roses and Modest Mouse rebounded from last week's shaky outings to deliver tighter performances worth of their catalogues. Jurassic 5 drew the biggest crowd of the night; Grinderman [...]

Video: Gliss, ‘Blur’

Gliss - Blur [Official Video HD]
Gliss' new album "Langsom Dans" is like the gift that keeps on giving — the more time you spend with it, with deeper you realize it is. The song "Blur" is a woozy, love-drunk meditation bathed in reverb and longing, and Dutch photographer and director Claudia Crobatia brings it to life with crisp, bright colors rather than (the predictable, one would think) hazy shadows. The trio — Victoria Cecilia, Martin Klingman and David Reiss — has made an album that blooms; pick your petal.
