Recently got a great CD from a band called Phineas & the Lonely Leaves, the name comes from the artists love of singing Guns N Roses covers at Monday night karaoke - confused, click here for the explanation. I love this kind record, all originals, heartfelt and honest tunes without pretence delivered to the listener in a mix of styles, the band on the CD consists [...]
Guy Clark's thirteen studio album, the second on Dualtone following 2006's critically acclaimed "Workbench Songs", is released later this month on the 22nd, I've really been looking forward to this since I heard the news that Guy was working on a new release - given the meticulous craft and quality control that he applies to his recordings expectations are always high. Titled "Somedays the Song Writes You" the album follows the collaborative writing pattern that proved successful of Guy's previous two albums The Dark and Workbench Songs, he teams up with old friends includin [...]

Chris Knight's latest release Trailer Taper II lived up to expectations, a set of excellent solo acoustic recordings showcasing the strength of Chris' writing. One of my favourite Chris Knight songs appeared on the Del McCoury album "Moneyland", Chris performed the track with Del and his band on Woodsongs along with Crooked Road and Danville from 2008's "Heart of Stone" album. If you're a Chris fan you'll love this three song set, you can watch / listen and download the complete show from the Woodsongs archive . A Train Not Running - Chris [...]

Online shopping for CD's, downloading, eBay surfing, it's all well and good but there's no substitute for hands on - spending some quality time browsing vinyl, you never know what you can turn up, sometimes you hit pay dirt and this weekend I dropped on 3 quality finds while thumbing through the stock at a local second hand vinyl market stall, now some of my family and friends find it hard to rationalize my delight and the grin on my face that follows buying a second hand piece of plastic in a cardboard sleeve, but hey what else can you [...]

Today, Tomorrow and Forever Guilty

I'd had it mind for a while to post some stuff related to my favourite Stones tracks, in light of the recent sad news about Jim Dickinson, thought I'd do a Wild Horses post in this week. Jim Dickinson played piano on The Rolling Stones version of Wild Horses released in 1971 on the Sticky Fingers album, my all-time favourite Stones track this song would figure in my top 20 off all-time. The song first saw the light of day when recorded by The Flying Burrito Brothers on their album Burrito Deluxe released in [...]

The blog's now picking up a lot more traffic from overseas thanks to my fellow bloggers over "the pond" and "down under" who have been kind enough to link back to me, so it got me to thinking about running a sort of Best of British series of posts, featuring of the best of what Team Americana GB has to offer. Though I'd kick it of with a plug for Pete Molinari, first came across Pete's music thanks to the excellent What's Kickin' Volume [...]

"Bob Dylan has taken a distinct turn for the weird lately. First there were reports that the smell emanating from a portable toilet in the grounds of his California home was distressing neighbours, then came news that the enigmatic musician had been picked up by New Jersey police for loitering outside a house in the pouring rain. Sandwiched between the bizarre incidents, Bob announced he is to record an album of Christmas standards. Fans may have stuck by him throughout the musically self destructive late 60s, the God-bothering late 70s and the Grateful Dead-collaborating-Madonna-imi tating mid 80s, but surely even Bob's [...]

Son Volt's "American Central Dust" is one of my favourite albums of the year so far and won't be Jay Farrar's only release of '09, Paste has an update of the collaboration with Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and their soundtrack to the new Jack Kerouac documentary " One Fast Move or I'm Gone Kerouac's Big Sur ", the full article is here and you can check out details of the DVD at the documentary website here . Could be one of the surprise releases of the year, looking forward to [...]

Been listening Tift's new album Buckingham Solo a lot this week it's available from Tift's website link Kungfunation ,the album is a limited edition one with Tift performing solo, it was recorded in Buckingham in November 2008 with Tift playing guitar or piano with the occasional harmonica flourish, the album showcases Tift's "pure" vocal, Morning is My Destination is particular high point for me, but the whole album is wonderful and her best to date in my opinion, the tracks are Tift originals with one cover, George Harrison's "I Live [...]

So here's Beat Surrender's premiere mixtape "More Twang Volume 1", featuring a cast of characters from Australia, UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden, Canada and [...]

Looking forward to hearing this, nice review at No Depression More Bottle Rockets at A Truer Sound 1 2 3

Wall Street Journal article. On Son Volt's latest album, "American Central Dust" (Rounder), we hear evidence of Jay Farrar's evolution as a composer. Compared with what he wrote for the band Uncle Tupelo's 1990 debut, "No Depression"—in which his words run together, fail to find a seat on the melody and never let the composition coalesce into a complete statement—the 12 songs on the new disc, Son Volt's eighth, are minimalism set to music . Cheers bonnerj

My Aimz Is True: Chris Knight: The Trailer Tapes II Aimz has news of the new Chris Knight album, the track listing is Old Ma n It Ain't Easy Being Me Highway Junkie Summer of 75 Bring The Harvest Home [...]

Ronnie Fauss has been kind enough to let me have a review copy of his EP "New Song for the Old Frontier, Volume 1" one listen got me looking forward to Volume 2. The collection of six songs totals a little over 22 minutes and runs through a gamut of emotions, showcasing Ronnie's talent, the lyrics are strong and thoughtful, the vocal has that whiskey soaked edge of authenticity, Made in Texas. The opening track "The [...]
