Upbeat Tune from Painted Palms + Free EP

Upbeat Tune from Painted Palms + Free EP We've covered Painted Palms before, and now we've all got even more reason to celebrate, as the group has just put up the FREE Nothing Lasts Long EP for your ears.  According to our sources, the story behind the release was for the duo to experiment with the worlds where psychedelia and electronica collide; they even intended to create is as a mixtape of sorts.  I'm really digging this tune below, with a really solid groove that grabs you from the get go.  You can grab yourself this rad little EP [...]

New Experimental Pop From Celestial Shore

New Experimental Pop From Celestial Shore Upon first listen to new track "Stairs Under Stars" from Celestial Shores , most will immediately compare the band to fellow experimental pop hit makers Dirty Projectors.  I'm sure most bands would take such a comparison as a compliment so lets say they mix Projectors with a touch of some swirly/surfy guitars thrown in for good measure.  Check out the track below and let us know what you think. New album,  10x , is due out September 3rd on Hometapes & Local Singles Records .

More New Music From Smith Westerns

The release date for new Smith Westerns album  Soft Will  draws closer this week, as we all eye June 25th to pick up our physical copy. With the release date close upon us, I'm sure many folks have had the chance to listen to most of the album (if not all of it).  Prior to the physical release, the band have offered up this new track "Idol" as a free stream on Soundcloud.  The bright, haze inducing pop is still a driving force behind this band.

Brand New Tunes from I Was a King

Brand New Tunes from I Was a King If you've followed this web site for some time, then you'll surely be aware of my unabashed love for I Was a King .  Through three albums, they've continued to amaze me with their pop tunes, and today there are signs that they're progressing even further.  They've got a new single coming out soon, and they've allowed us to share one of the tracks with you all, so we're doing just that.  I've chosen "Oslo Share," which displays the band working with their excellent vocal harmonies, providing music that continues to leave an impression, even [...]

Fun Garage Pop From The Rich Hands

Fun Garage Pop From The Rich Hands I know very little about San Antonio based group The Rich Hands , though I feel a little embarrassed since they live just down the road from us.  My ignorance aside, I've found myself taken almost immediately to the band's sound and style.  Below you can get a taste of what I'm talking about with "Never Let You Go", which displays a keen since of pop music with some dirty garage overtones.  They remind me a lot of ATX/Houston friends Young Girls so of course I'm in for that. The band has a new LP  Dreamers [...]

Surfer Blood – Pythons

Surfer Blood – Pythons Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Back in 2010, these Floridians busted their way into the music scene with their garage rock with their debut album Astrocoast , which received widespread praise for its catchy singles and interesting riffs. Following that, the band released an EP, Tarot Classics , last year, which rekindled interest among fans and reminded them that Surfer Blood has more music yet to come. Enter Pythons . At a length of ten [...]

Rock n’ Roll from Hunx and His Punx

Rock n’ Roll from Hunx and His Punx It seems like Hunx has an agenda set up for his future: rock it out with Hunx and His Punx and play garage rock ballads with Hunx. Hardly Art is gearing up to release Street Punk on July 23rd, and since it's a HHP album, it definitely is a departure from Hairdresser Blues .  From the opening moment on the lead single, you can feel the ferocity that's about to ensue, but while it may have a [...]

New Surf Pop From Hibou

New Surf Pop From Hibou It's the perfect time of year for a song like this one from Seattle based Hibou .  The surfy and jangly vibe should be perfect to carry you along your way to the beach or possibly the lake.  Hit play on "Sunder" and start your summer relaxation off the right way. Hibou has a new EP entitled  Dunes  out June 13th.

Power Pop Goodness from Missing Monuments

Power Pop Goodness from Missing Monuments While they may have dropped the "King Louie" aspect from their name, Missing Monuments is still very much the project of Louie Bankston; he's got the pedigree of power-pop genius, but I can appreciate the name alteration.  The group has a self-titled album coming out in the fall via my favorite lil' label, Dirtnap Records , and our first taste has a bit of a heavier punch than some of the previous works we've gotten from Louie and the boys.  The riffs begin just as usual, but as the [...]

Swirling Indie Pop from Skittle Alley

Swirling Indie Pop from Skittle Alley Warm weather brings varying moods, and while sometimes we curse the heat, in Texas I can say that it definitely brings to mind spritely indie pop, such as the recent work of Skittle Alley .   Luckily, the band, who've been posting lots of new songs, seem to have something in the works with the very excellent Dufflecoat Records .  This new tune is full of warm melody, shimmering guitars and a casual pace that will surely leave you smiling as you listen; that's interesting as the new release seems [...]

Indie Rock From Can’t Dance

Indie Rock From Can’t Dance This new song "Trust Issues" by Johnstown, PA group Can't Dance is something you'd expect to hear during the underground indie  movement of the 90s.  Within the song, you can clearly hear that the young trio would likely call bands like Built to Spill or Pavement groups that influence their own sound.  As a fan of that era and most those groups, I'm getting behind this one and giving it my approval. New EP  Comfortably Dumb is out on June 18th. Download:  Can't Dance - Trust Issues  [MP3]

Lemuria – The Distance Is So Big

Lemuria – The Distance Is So Big Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Lately the musical landscape has been peddling bands who've grown up on the alternative rock of the 90s.  Some of those sounds are great, while others sound outdated, but I think Lemuria have landed in a spot that nods to the past while looking forward.  Their new record, The Distance Is So Big , recalls great moments from Dear You -era Jawbreaker , yet includes a heavy dosage of male/female vocal interplay, [...]

Jamming out with King Khan and the Shrines

Jamming out with King Khan and the Shrines Long have we adored KK and the Shrines , and we've been excited since they first announced their upcoming for Merge Records .  On the latest single, there's definitely a bit of restraint, at least for my ears.  The song holds back from the typical garage rock pummeling, using an effects pedal to sort of provide a tripped out stomp; I like the clarity of the vocals throughout as well, which is a touch of a change.  They're titling the album Idol No More , [...]

Show Review: Snowden @ Red7 (6/7)

Show Review: Snowden @ Red7 (6/7) Six years ago, that was the last time I saw this band. Snowden is back after checking out for little bit with Jordan bringing along new people for the live setting, tightening the belt to a three piece. The show had a reunion feeling to it; fans listening to the jams flowing for the Learning Secrets ' wheels of steel were trying to one up each other on stories how Anti-Anti helped them through a tough time or how it was a soundtrack to an epic road trip. Some had scene the band before, some [...]

Soft Ballad from Ashley Eriksson of LAKE

Soft Ballad from Ashley Eriksson of LAKE Ashley Eriksson is the lead singer of LAKE , and the songwriter of the theme song for Adventure Time .  Of course, she's always been working on the side, and she's ready to debut a new record, Colours , which comes out on July 16th.  She possess a tranquil voice, carefully draped across the top of her elegant piano tapestries. There's a respect for the the empty space that belongs in music, allowing her songs to achieve some beautiful clarity. She'll be teaming up with K Records [...]

Soliti Music Turns 2

Cats on Fire - My Sense Of Pride I'm really excited for my far away friend Nick and his wonderful label to be celebrating two successful years.   Soliti Music has brought us gems from Cats on Fire to The New Tigers to Big Wave Riders , and in honor of that celebration, the label is giving up an 8 track compilation of tunes that are either unreleased or demo versions.  They've even got a few words about each of the songs, which you [...]

Coma Cinema – Posthumous Release

Coma Cinema – Posthumous Release Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars There comes a time in every music nerd's life (hopefully more often than once) where you find a record that completely fulfills you, that brings you back time and time again to listen carefully; for me, that record is Posthumous Release .   Coma Cinema is the project of Mathew Cothran, and I'll do my best to give justice to this incredible album, though I'm not sure if even words can suffice. "VHS White Trash" opens up [...]

New Tune from Modern Hut

New Tune from Modern Hut Joe Steinhardt is working under the moniker Modern Hut , and it's time we introduce this fantastic new voice to you all.  His songs, like the one below, are pretty basic in construction, just using guitar and some minimal backing accompaniment. But, I'm particularly interested in the way his vocals are delivered, not to mention the lyrics that tie everything together.  Perhaps you can ascribe similarities to John Darnielle or a more serious Adam Green, which both count as great things in my book.  His album Generic Treasure will be [...]

Show Review – Milo Greene @ the Parish (6.5)

Show Review – Milo Greene @ the Parish (6.5) Wednesday night proved to be a sold out show for Los Angeles band, Milo Greene , at the Parish. Fans were excited to hear how the group would transfer their sound from their self-titled folksy debut to the live setting. Openers and Austin locals, Blue Bear took the stage around 9:00pm, stating that their goal was simply to amp up the crowd for the headlining act. And amp they did, playing a short set designed to wow and win them some fans in their short amount of [...]
