Danny Byrd, M.I.Loki, Technokrat, Mr. Shanks, Timmy Dutch. All getting a little bit crazy at the Sheffield Ski Village tomorrow night from 6pm. Tickets are available from Skiddle for a measly £10. There's going to be music and dancing and drinking and skiing and snowboarding, oh what a wonderful time will be had by all! Once again, facebook has all the answers . Yay!
Quick heads up of the new Andy H mix available free courtesy of Sheffield's The Tuesday Club. I haven't actually listened to it yet because Rapidshare is being a massive tool but have a go, see if the internet likes you more. Andy H's January 2009 Mix
Bill Shannon's freestyle street crutch/skateboard brilliance that we first saw in the music video for RJD2's Work It Out is now being used by Visa in their latest campaign to prove to us that life is way more fun with a credit card. Wicked. The original and far less subliminally evil video after the jump.
Ratatat are going on tour in the United States of America. Who gives a flying squirrel I hear you cry but wait, surely a North American tour means a European tour will definitely follow in the not-too-distant future? Not at all but let's stay optimistic. This is really just an excuse for me to pour my heart out over 2008's LP3. What a record! I mean top of the pile, grade A, no artifical flavours, colours or preservatives genius. Pick it up from your local record shop or Bleep if you can't be bothered to move and [...]
'Trane-Wild yet meditative free jazz from the Alto legend Marion Brown in an under-heard session from 1965 distributed by ESP Disk; Joining him are trumpeter Alan Shorter adding some tight fills and Reggie Johnson licking the upright bass.' Need I say anymore? Need I say anymore... If Four Tet likes it then why on earth can't you? Get your fill and have a lick at Bleep .
I found this on the site of a nice new net label from Stockholm called Astor Bell , who e-mailed me today to let me know of their existence and the fact that they've already got 3 [decent] free releases online. Simply called I Love Techno #4 , the mix was recorded live by Mattias Edholm and it's packed full of chippy minimal vibes, sure to get you popping at 2 in the afternoon in Ibiza. Full tracklisting after the jump. Mattias Edholm - I Love Techno #4 [...]
Don your top hats, boots and best monocle, the boys involved with fire of the bass variety are back once again, determined to spread their virus of aural chaos throughout the Sheffield populace. Upstairs at DQ on March 14th, for the middle-of-the-income-scale sum of 5 English pounds, the boys in blue - or whatever colour they choose to wear - are bringing you the eclectic stylings of No Fakin DJs , Brighton beatboxer Benji Boko , Kent drum & bass riser Tru-Fix as well as the usual vinyl perversion offered by the Bass Fire DJs themselves, TimmyDutch and [...]
Dropping heaviness straight out of Switzerland, DeadByBeats has engineered a February mix which would probably make people explode if they'd listened to it in the 50s. Dubbed Dark Side of Bass , it is dangerously brimming with woofer-wobbling sonic brutality. As soon as you get a whiff of the fact that Broken Note tunes are on their way, you know things have crossed the path of vibration and strayed into the territory of convulsion. There's even some metal creeping in towards the end. Phew, this one is bigger than Tom Hanks. Full tracklisting after the jump. [...]
This week's Tuesday Club is going to be a free one for the members. They're giving back, like Bob Geldof does to Africa, although I don't know what he took from Africa, no-one over there even likes The Boomtown Rats. Anyway, the Bigger Than Barry DJs are going to be dropping shit alongside the usual residents and also a supposed d&b legend, whose identity is being kept under wraps until the night. The only clue we've been given indicates that without them, drum & bass wouldn't be the way it is, so, someone pretty important basically. Of course, speculation abounds [...]
It's the new 65daysofstatic album! But not until 20/04/09. All the better to eat you with . All the more reason to get more and more excited by the day until you reach some kind of previously unknown level of excitement and explode. It's alright, I understand. I'll call work, tell them you won't be in for a while. 65 played Sheffield Union t'other night, epic stuff. I won't bang on about it, I'll just say their mesmerizing blend of ungenrable post-hardcore IDM influenced garage-rock is highly recommended and we'll all get on with our day. The official [...]
All the way up to big 8-0, the Hospital podcast is still going strong. This edition features the usual melange of sick tuneage including a serene new track from Mutated Forms dubbed 'Pessimist', a Danny Byrd classic in 'Changes' and a new single from High Contrast, 'Seven Notes in Black'. Get it on iTunes or over at the Hospital Records site .
Just a heads up to let you all know that Gui Boratto's second album, Take My Breath Away , is now available for you to spend your blood money on. I've actually gone and paid some pennies for it myself and from what I've listened to so far, it seems fairly adequate. I'd tell you to head over to his official site for some more information but his bandwidth limit has been exceeded, that's buzz for you kids. Take My Breath Away is out now on Kompakt, check it out at Beatport .
Influential Belgian label R&S are back and in celebration of their upcoming re-issuing of several rare electronica albums, they're offering free tracks for download to anyone who signs up to their mailing list. I picked up Aphex Twin's 'Xtal' but there may be a few more on offer, I guess you'll have to find out for yourself. Look out for re-releases of Aphex Twin's Ambient Works 85-92 , Model 500's Classics , Ken Ishii's Jellytones and Dave Angel's Classics , all of which, I believe, are hitting shelves on April 7. Head over [...]
Unfinished and obviously unreleased new tracks from Burial were brought to the nation's attention when Hyperdub founder Kode9 cheekily slid a couple into his 'Hyperdub label showcase' on Benji B's BBC Radio 1Xtra show. OMG I can't believe he revealed his identity blah blah blah have a listen here .
One of the good things about the internet is that you can find interesting stuff, whether it be music, current affairs or porn, with relative ease. I should be doing far more academic things right now but instead... U2 - Get Your Boots On (Crookers Remix) UNKLE - Restless (Fake Blood Remix) MP3s courtesy of Stoney Roads and You Can Call Me Pelski respectively. As usual the U2 lyrics don't make any sense but Crookers do [...]
This isn't one of those new music posts, so sorry to those of you who can't help but move forward. But, if you're willing to stop and listen for a second, I'd like you to cast your eyes back over Hyperdub's catalogue to HDB011 and take a look at a song called 'CCTV' by LV, which features the vocal talents of Dandelion. It shuffled into the limelight on my iTunes this morning and has been on a continuous loop pretty much ever since, it's awesome, I never even knew I had it. Check it out over at [...]
Edinburgh's DFRNT has produced a February mix for all the ambient heads among us. This one is stirring, a sonic melange of aural ardency, it manages to hit all the right spots. As visually redolent as it is aurally deep, it proves evocative, conjuring images of cities at night, neon lights twinkling off black granite and polished glass. It reminds me of the time Oldsy and I walked down Fleet Street at 5am after a particularly enlightening night at Fabric. My urban romances aside, you only need to take a glance at the tracklisting after the jump to see that [...]
For those of you who consider yourselves to be au fait with the world of music production, Native Instruments' new toy, Maschine, is finally going to be hitting UK stores on February 23. It's basically a groove box/drum machine/sequencer which works in conjunction with the Maschine software to give you a new dimension of control over your music. If I were to concisely express its purpose I'd say that it makes samples minions and you God, so there. If I had the money I would be forking out for one of these sweet little mothers pronto, unfortunately, I'm eating tuna [...]
London drum & bass duo Nero have been trying their hand at dubstep as of late and thus far, the results have been pretty god damn positive. Their dubstep-dedicated Myspace is littered with quality tunes including their new remix of Bar9's 'Shaolin Style' and my personal favourite, 'This Way' which features vocals from Alana. Some of their shit is so heavy my mac had trouble lifting the tunes from my memory to the speakers, don't just trust me, head over there now and get ready to skank around your house like a monkey on coke. By [...]
The next The Streets album is very much underway and Mike Skinner has posted a blog on his Myspace today stating that it's currently taking a route tainted with the essence of rave! "It now sounds ravey" he wrote, "it is a ravey album album that bludgeons you over the head with its stick of 1988 Romford, Blackpool and Philadelphia rock. It is an insane album." I love The Streets and this news excites me very much, Mike is an awesome producer and although Everything is Borrowed wasn't a patch on his previous work, I still have faith [...]
