Alt J - Brixton Academy, London 16/05/13 It's just a few days shy of a year since the release of Alt-J's genre-defying master-piece, An Awesome Wave , and I find myself standing in Brixton Academy for the first of the band's sold-out two night residency at the historic South London venue. It's been a meteoric rise for the band who have gone from university side project to Mercury and Ivor Novello (for 'Best Album' which was awarded this night) award winners in an impressively short time-frame. One thing which is instantly clear from the crowd [...]

Stream Laura Marling's new album, Once I Was An Eagle

Stream Laura Marling's new album, Once I Was An Eagle Laura Marling is set to release her new album next week, but thanks to NPR you can hear it right now. Whilst the likes of Mumford & Sons continue to gain worldwide popularity, along with a continued rise of 'haters', Laura Marling has taken a slightly slower pace with her career, which is a good thing. On her fourth album, Once I Was An Eagle , Marling cements herself as one of the most compelling singer-songwriters around. Listen below for proof of that.

Gregor Schwellenbach - Spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt

Gregor Schwellenbach - Spielt 20 Jahre Kompakt There's a couple of highly amusing quotes in the comments section of the Resident Advisor record label site, posted following the news that German modern classical composer Gregor Schwellenbach has chosen to celebrate 20 years of the seminal Cologne-based dance music titans Kompakt by re-imagining some of the label's best moments in his own chosen musical style. The user 'narmst12' writes: "I'm sorry but dance 'music' is not musically rich enough to be compatible with classical, chances are this will be mawkish and boring," whilst 'southernoutpost' thinks it's a big old waste of time: "Maybe rather having trained [...]

Instagrammed: Top 35 photos from The Great Escape 2013

Instagrammed: Top 35 photos from The Great Escape 2013 "Hey, what do you do?" / "Here's my business card" / "Will you listen to my band's demo" / "I haven't seen any bands yet, but I'm wasted" / "The queues are too long" / "Where's my hotel again?" / "Brighton is pretty". These are all phrases you probably heard during the last few days in Brighton. Why? Because The Great Escape was in town! A festival of 'delegates' and 'buzz bands'. Sadly the weather wasn't great, but it's a 'non-camping' festival, so no point in complaining, right? Our 'proper' coverage will be on the [...]

The 405 meets The Ravonettes

The 405 meets The Ravonettes Cast your mind back to 2002. The Queen Mother passed away, Argentina defaulted on its sovereign debt, and the nation became experts in a hitherto insignificant little bone when David Beckham broke his metatarsal. In the world of music, although the White Stripes' Elephant and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's debut LP were still a year away, the so-called New Rock Revolution was well underway, sweeping all before it and led by five louche New York kids rocking Converse and skinny jeans. Amidst all this, a little known duo from Copenhagen released a scuzzy, brash EP of garage rock [...]

Kanye West Is The 8th Wonder Of The World

Kanye West Is The 8th Wonder Of The World Kanye West is perhaps the most polarising musician in the industry. His off-stage antics – calling George W. Bush racist , frequent paparazzi bust-ups and the whole Taylor Swift thing , among countless others – have landed him hot water on many occasions. His onstage rants are described as the fruits of his inflated ego, his super-narcissism verbalised. We've seen more of him than we really ever wanted to. He's more like tabloid fodder, especially with vapid socialite Kim Kardashian bearing his spawn, than a real musician , right? South Park [...]
