It's been a long time since our last interview, but we're beginning to get back in the groove of it. The latest band to briefly sit down with us was Why? We greatly appreciate them doing it, and strongly recommend picking up their albums including their newest, Eskimo Snow . Why?- A Sky For Shoeing Horses Under f/k: The overall sound and lyrical delivery on your new album, Eskimo Snow , is quite [...]

So I'm head over heels for Atlas Sound's new album Logos . Because that isn't released until Oct. 19th, I don't want to post anything from it to avoid getting in trouble. Instead, I thought I'd post a song I found on Bradford Cox's blog. He has a lot of great mixes and EP's that are definitely worth checking out. This is off a holiday EP he made, and is easily one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. But for some reason I love listening to it, and so it's the song o' the week for me. Head [...]
Wow. This is awesome. Mp3 download below. More from the creator here . Carl Sagan (Feat. Stephen Hawking) — A Glorious Dawn –Chris
The first scene from the highly anticipated and acclaimed documentary Under Great Northern White Lights about The White Stripes is a tender one with Jack and Meg walking through an old barren cemetery in Canada over a live version of "We're Going To Be Friends." It's sweet, it's artsy; andit's The White Stripes. I look forward to the entire documentary. –Bishop–

It's official — Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard are married. Shugo Tokumaru — Wedding ( Amazon / iTunes ) –Bishop–

Why? — Eskimo Snow Why? follows up their critically acclaimed '08 album Alopecia with a departure from their usual sound. While lead singer Yoni Wolf still has his bag of fascinating lyrics and rap-like delivery, the backing instrumentation has more or less abandoned the hip hop roots and has taking more of a turn toward indie rock. Which isn't a bad thing. The hits far outweigh the misses overall, and while I [...]

The four of us here at f/k are always talking to one another about music, as you can imagine, and one of our more heated debates as of late has been over the best album of the MM's so far. Albums like Kid A, Person Pitch, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Funeral have been thrown around, but I feel that we sometimes forget the golden gem given to us by James Murphy in MMVII, S ound of Silver . More commonly known as LCD Soundsystem , Murphy [...]

This week features a number of great releases, so in addition to tomorrow's Humpday suggestion, I felt like I needed to quickly mention another album that I've been liking quite a bit lately. Island's third album Vapours gets released today, and I must admit that it's quite infectious. Layered with synth and guitar and catchy lyrics, it's really more of a pop album than anything that's going outside the box. But it's really good pop. I suggest grabbing a copy, and if you're a little dubious, here's a little sample. Also, if you want the vinyl, you're going [...]

Last night my friend Charles reminded me about Animal Collective's album, Strawberry Jam . I forget about Animal Collective sometimes, I'm not sure how. Here's "Derek" — I love the lyrics and the bizarrely familiar melody that has been stuck in my head all morning. Animal Collective — Derek Amazon / iTunes –Chris

Put on your headphones, turn up the bass, close your eyes and prepare for a journey. Meet Sync24, an ambient acid producer from Sweden. Sync24 — Cryptobiosis –Bishop

Murs I'm starting to feel like we've forgotten about hip-hop here at fork/knife. Sure, you could say the four of us are indie-rock fans. There's only so much to say about it, though. Sometimes it seems like all music blogs are touting the same new bands, the same bands that are getting hype and attention in places like The Hype Machine or Pitchfork, etc. So, I think I'm going to start to shake things up a bit more. Let's start off with MURS. The acronym stands for "Making Underground Raw Shit". Sure, it may [...]

The Dodos — Time To Die Following The Dodos' stellar sophomore album Visiter , their 3rd full length Time To Die packs a similar punch to its predecessor. Having grabbed the help of Seattle music guru Phil Ek and of new band member Keaton Snyder, they have churned in a more polished and equally enjoyable album and sound to what we've gotten used to. The flow of the album is impressive, and I [...]

Elizabeth Powell — Land of Talk No record grabbed me quite as much last year as Land of Talk's second album, Some Are Lakes . I've fallen madly in love with lead singer Elizabeth Powell, to the point where I'm pretty sure she could sing nonsensical gibberish and I wouldn't notice. Her voice consistently gives me the shivers. Here's a new song from their upcoming EP, Fun and Laughter . Props to The Blisslist for reminding me about this great band. Land of Talk — May You Never [...]
As much as I try to stop listening to the Rural Alberta Advantage, I simply can't. We saw them last weekend at The Positive Jam fest with Hold Steady and Deertick, where they played a great set despite playing such an open venue. Seeing them again brought me back to our previous time we saw them, and their encore song they played entitled "Goodnight." They mentioned that they've never recorded it, and due to increasing attendance at their shows, may never play it again live. So when I found this video of it, I was ecstatic and decided to share [...]
Here's a great video for Grizzly Bear's song, "While You Wait For The Others," off of their newest album, Veckatimest . It was directed by Sean Pecknold, brother of Robin Pecknold, who's the lead singer of Fleet Foxes. Many thanks to Matt over at You Ain't No Picasso for posting the video. Enjoy. –Chris
I know I've been absent for a few weeks now, for several reasons that I'd rather not discuss, but I'm back and ready to roll. I would like to remind everybody of the hidden gems on Good New For People Who Love Bad News. Everybody knows about "Float On" and "Satin in a Coffin", but here are two of my favorite tracks of Modest Mouse's 2004 album. Modest Mouse — The Good Times Are Killing Me Modest Mouse — Blame It On The Tetons [...]

The Black Keys, a blues-duo from Akron, Ohio, have come a long way. Their most recent album, Attack and Release , was produced by Danger Mouse and released by Nonesuch Records to rave reviews. It's a great record no doubt, but the band's back-catalog is well worth exploring. Here's two songs from Rubber Factory , a great album from the band's younger days when they played with an unbeatably loose sound. The Black Keys — Girl Is On My Mind The Black Keys — Stack Shot Billy [...]

So I was wondering what exactly was the deal with Laura Veirs' July Flame , and now I've been told the answer indirectly through a twitter update ! You can check out Veirs' website for the details, or you can read on… The album will drop on January 19th here in the states (which ironically is as far from July as you can be, oh well…) and I am extremely excited to hear what she has developed this time around. She certainly started to [...]

Because Donovan and I watched the movie Johnny English last weekend, I think it's safe to say this song hasn't yet gotten out of either one of our heads this whole week. ABBA– Does Your Mother Know iTunes / amazon As much as I'd like that to be Song o' the Week, a better song deserves that title. VF_DOS_ just made the below homemade video for [...]

Very sadly, it's starting to get colder here in CT, and my blogmates in NY and MN aren't faring much better I suspect.. Fall makes me think of a lot of songs, and being back at school in particular brings up a lot of particular genres. This is a mix of songs that were on repeat last fall and songs that have been on repeat so far this fall. Animal Collective — College Amazon / iTunes Kaki King — Montreal Amazon [...]
