One of my most heavily anticipated albums of the year, Rules by the Whitest Boy Alive came as a welcome surprise. An album that didn't break barriers for the group, yet comes across as one of the most polished and perfected albums so far in 2009. Much like it's 2006 predecessor Dreams, this album has some of the best bass hooks and strategically placed synth keys I've heard on record. The album plays off those two elements, from the beginning of each track, to the end. "Intentions," one of my favorite tracks on [...]

About time Bloc Party brings the party to the block of N. 1st & W.7th. According to staff writer, Alexandera M. Svokos of Popsense.com , wrote, “The crowd erupted as the band took the stage and confidently began their set…playing both new and old favorites…the audience jumped, screamed, and danced around, fists pumping in the air…” at Terminal 5 in New York City on March 25th. I have no doubt that long-time, loyal-fans of earlier albums Silent Alarm & Weekend in the City and new fans of their album Intimacy , will [...]

As I discussed earlier this month, Substance is making their "official" introduction as an organization tomorrow night, Friday March 27th, with the Manifestation concert at First Ave. In anticipation of the show, the guys at Cake in 15 were able to talk to Substance co-founder Jim Morrey to get the low-down on what Substance is all about. Read it all here ! "The word “manifestation” shares a root with “ manifestazioni” , the Italian word for “protest”. Both come from the Latin ”manifestus”, literally, “struck by the hand”, as in, [...]

This my friends, is an extremely special video. What we have Tom Morello introducing right here is, for all intents and purposes, basically a Soundgarden reunion. It's Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden with Tad Doyle of Tad , and it's just what I needed. Holy fuckin' shit, what a video! This makes me forget all about that pile of shit that Chris Cornell just put out. Here is the reintroduction of the Garden, with the classic "Hunted Down": [...]

This video is just another testament to how talented Stef really is. This video shows him covering the Pearl Jam tune "Why Go", and may I mind you it's very impressive. I love how he has the MPC right next to his keyboard and he tears the shit out of both of them during the duration of the track. Make sure you go out and get Never Better now because that album is truly some great material. Posted in Media, Video Tagged: Never Better, P.O.S., Pearl Jam, Rhymesayers Entertainment, Why Go

Man Kweli & Hi-Tek really have me anticipating the new Reflection Eternal album. This interview is making the anticipation grow at an alarming rate. Hi-Tek basically says that this new album is going to be the next level from the previous Reflection album, and that makes me really fucking excited. Notice how Kweli talks about updating their formulas with the times (Gang Starr shit). Hi-Tek says that the album is at a "strong 50%" which means that we should look forward to seeing it relatively soon. Also make sure you look close in the background, you can see Hi-Tek punching [...]

Anyone who's anything more than a fringe listener of metal knows that thrash is back in a big way over the last few years, and it's not just the classic bands who have propelled the rejuvenation of the thrash. In fact, it's more likely that the formation of countless "revival" thrash acts such as Toxic Holocaust, Bonded By Blood, and Early Man reminded Metallica how to rock than the other way around (...one man's POV...). While Exodus, Kreator, and Metallica all have tours coming through the area soon, it's important not to overlook some of the excellent smaller [...]

Watching this video was pretty much the highlight of my day. It also makes me want to see a live Black Milk show more and more. Watch this video as he completely destroys his set and tears it up for the fine city of Machester. He starts off the set with one of my favorites from Tronic , "Long Story Short", and then follows with "So Gone" which was a track from Popular Demand . I love when Black jumps on the MPC and starts playing around with the beat for "The Matrix". This guy has some serious [...]

So this pretty much blew my mind, and turned a terrible day into a slightly displeasing one. I've been anxiously awaiting news from this movie, and for the release of course too, but I had not idea the news and trailer would be this amazing. So get your act together and watch the two minute trailer below. The video's set to the beautiful (and slightly re-done) "Wake Up" by The Arcade Fire, and the film itself will be scored by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Karen O. Oh man, I'm foaming at the mouth over this. "There's one in all of [...]
Here we are again folks with another episode of "your favorite podcast about nothing in particular". This week's episode is about the live Diggnation show at SXSW , as well as Nic's trip to Texas, music, movies and wine. This is shaping up to be one of my favorite things to watch on the net. Make sure you check out the video, and don't forget to check out their site here . Posted in Culture Tagged: SXSW, [...]

Displaying an elegance and savvy soulfulness of a band wise beyond their years, it's hard to believe that Black Blondie are only now making the announcement for what they consider to be their "debut". The local fourpiece has been earning respect and acclaim both locally and nationally over the past few years for their danceable, experimental style of gritty, soul, pop, hip-hop and R&B; they've been tapped to open for everyone from the Roots to Jill Scott to K'naan to Amy Winehouse (as well as participated in countless much smaller local gigs) and even appeared on URB 's [...]

These days, waiting 4 years between albums is basically the equivalent to a lifetime, and maybe that's why it seems like Dredg basically disappeared from the face of the earth after they releaseed 2005's Catch Without Arms . The growth that Dredg showed from their earlier releases to CWA was something quite remarkable (which may be why I didn't appreciate it as much upon its initial release), and given 4 more years of growth, one couldn't be very sure what to expect from Dredg's forthcoming album The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion . Well, [...]
Extreme Noise Records has been holding down the punk rock scene in Minneapolis to its roots since it began 15 years years ago, and for their anniversary coming up they plan to reaffirm that to anyone who may have forgot! The reputable independent/co-op punk record shop has planned a 15th Anniversary concert itinerary at the Triple Rock Social Club that is sure to make any local crusty as giddy as a schoolgirl; for me, the biggest excitement from this recent announcement is knowing that the reunited crust-punk innovators of Amebix will be making an [...]
I was over at Okayplayer the other day and this news article definitely caught my eye. I've been looking forward to a new Mos Def album since his last one. I sadly wasn't a huge fan of Tru3 Magic but I know that Mos has it in him to make another classic. They were saying [...]
As I was listening to the Berklee Internet Radio Network (BIRN), I caught the trail end of some unfamiliar lyrics"Don't Let the Darkness Eat You Up". I quickly searched the lyrics and found the song "Down the Line" sung beautifully by a Swedish lad, José González. "Down the Line" was a single off his September [...]
Man it seems like the year that Black Milk has been having can only happen in a dream. He released (in my opinion) the best album of last year, and is coming out with more deadly venom this year with a wide array of projects (Random-Axe, Tracks on the new Slum Village, working with KRS [...]
I was talking to super-fly uncle and he had told me to check out this fun, interactive website: Pearl Jam 10 Special Editions. Pretty much you assemble a 3-D photograph of a Pearl Jam album cover, and you are rewarded with a free download of one of their Special Edition Tracks. DIG DEEPER: Website [...]
This gem has been sitting in my inbox for a few days because I haven't had the time to get it on the blog because of school issues. I am glad that I finally have time to get this up because it features two of the illest emcees in the game right now. "Bullet [...]
Isis is back. In only a few weeks, their new album Wavering Radiant will be officially unveiled, and this guy couldn't be happier! Really, when it rains it pours; within a short 24 hour period I'm getting my ears on the first tastes of music from new Converge AND Isis - I think my head [...]
