...Watch The Last Waltz in tribute to Levon Helm who passed away yesterday. The Band's drummer and singer was 71. I don't have an intimate knowledge of the discography of the man but I will say this: Scorsese's The Last Waltz film of The Band's farewell gig is the greatest music concert I've ever seen committed to film. It has personal significance to me as I was introduced to it by Aoife when we started going out so it'll always remind me of that time, particularly 'The Weight' where you seen Helm leading [...]

We all know that the internet has changed the way we watch music videos, that's nothing new. For myself, I've noticed a shift in how I perceive them and what I want from them. In the old days of MTV, I wanted clever videos the type that were hailed in DVD series , not just bands standing around in a studio playing the song. I reckoned if you put some thought into your videos, then logically you'd put thought into your music. But that was the golden age of music videos; these days there are so many bands [...]

Another Record Store Day release, this one. a selection of six covers of doo wop songs by Patrick Kelleher . Doo wop's brand of pop relies heavy on vocal harmonies and Patrick's voice is one up to the task. The ghost in the title also comes from his ability to add some haunting atmospheres to songs. The originals are by The Bop Chords , Jimmy "Handyman" Jones, Rosie and the Originals, The Teen Queens , Eddie Cochran's classic 'Summertime Blues' , Rosie and the Originals It'll be released on Saturday on 50 hand numbered cassettes through Long Lost Records [...]

It's not just El-P from the now defunct Company Flow who is releasing a new album in the next while. Bigg Jus ' new album Machines That Make Civilization Fun is our on May 8th and the first single 'Black Roses' sees Jus as caustic as he can be over a sampled horn loop. The big paydirt is the El-P Brooklyn's Heatwave remix for which El provides his typically singular production and beats. The remix is so called because it was recorded by the pair during the Heatwave of 2011, you can almost [...]
These two ladies play Twisted Pepper Thursday night along with Temper-Mental MissElayneous. Read an interview with them on State by Bitzl R's Alan Reilly.
Record Store Day is happening on Saturday and as well as a buttload of once-off special releases and lots of daytime events in Dublin, nationwide and worldwide . So we get Logikparty doing Jimmy Sommerville's You Make Me Feel Mighty Real , Crayonsmith doing Blondie's 'Atomic', Drunken Boat doing Culture Club's 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?', [...]
Not much information on this other than Humansuit are Isaiah Toothtaker and Mestizo and here, they've teamed up with Gonjasufi on a Flying Lotus production.

Kool Thing dropped their debut EP Light Games back in January and next month the Berlin-based duo of Jon Dark and Julie Chance will follow that up another EP at the end of May. 'We Are Here' is taken from that release. Its gnarled and creeped rhythm turns with shadowed guitar notes and voice treatments while synths ping in the distance. The song's beat keeps us on the beaten track rather than lose us in the darkness. Kool Thing will be playing Camden Crawl Dublin on May 12th as well [...]

I saw Jessie Ware's gig at Eurosonic and I wasn't that impressed. I didn't think the live show was ready at that point so I had sort of written her off a bit. '100%' tells me I might have been a bit unfair to dismiss her which is why I overlooked her Sade-esque previous single 'Running' . Not that it seemed many bookers in the audience that day felt the same; she's since been booked for Melt, Pukkelpop, Bestival and Field Day. Songs like '100%' are why.it's a click-clacking soulful track with [...]

Portland(ia) is hometown for Pure Bathing Culture , the oddly-named indie-pop duo of Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille. Their debut self-titled EP is out on May 22nd through Father/Daughter Records . Its four tracks are full of sweet melodies, '80s guitar effects and subtle synth sounds. The pair are in the band Vetiver together and started writing songs as a duo in 2009 in New York before moving to Oregon last year where they hooked up with Richard Swift to record the EP. The band's bright arrangements are comparable to Tennis and [...]

While Dublin's Channel One are on hold, band members Paul O' Reilly and Owen O’ Mahony have made an album of electronic material together as Forrests. 'Billions' is the first listen to the band, a succint instrumental track that mines similar sky-reaching terrain as M832s starry-eyed moments. Ones to keep an eye on. Download the track from Bandcamp and like the band on Facebook .
Diplo and Switch asked Amber Coffman to collaborate on Major Lazer's superb new digital dancehall single. Her tones shine through when she's front and centre away from the cacophony of Dirty Projectors. It's a free download at majorlazergetfree.com along with a Bonde Do Role remix.

Every year I go to South By Southwest, there's always one band I come back from Austin that becomes a slight obsession. 20122s band was Hundred Waters . I escaped the melee that was 6th Street in Downtown Austin, hopped on my bike and pegged it up to 43rd Street, a decision justified by a gorgeous set from the Gainesville Florida band at their label's Elestial Sound showcase. Kaleidoscopic visuals and set up under billowing patterned sheets above their heads gave the gig a cocoon feel. When paired with the warm atmospherics of Hundred [...]

Every Friday, I pick out four new music picks from the best of the music blogosphere as part of my Day & Night internet section. Follow Day & Night on Twitter or Facebook . It's out today in print with every copy of the Irish Independent. Lulu James In today's hyper-accelerated world, it's hard for music that needs a few plays to make a first impression. Newcastle singer Lulu James' has something that brings first listeners back – a magnetising raw soul voice paired with [...]
It's good to see Tom Jenkinson's return to Squarepusher's dark acid side still sounds as weird in 2012 as it ever did, perhaps even more so after a few years of aggressive nu-dubstep drops and hyper-charged electronic music. It's the gigantic synth line that takes this track away from excursions into digital noise rhythm, inflecting the track with an opulence and ominous atmosphere. Synths that sound like road vehicles in hi-octane mode make 'Dark Steering' would fit perfectly into the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. Tom Jenkinson gives his own explanation of the track after the jump.
