I'm fairly overwhelmed by The Antlers' performance at Union Hall last night. It was the release show for their new album Hospice . Luckily for you, the band is allowing free streaming of the entire album here . You should definitely give it a listen (NPR recently said that it's their number one album of 2009 so far). They played Hospice in full last night, and it's a truly stunning effort. The band could easily have gotten weighed down in self-indulgent keyboard/guitar noisescapes. Instead, they balance perfectly between just the [...]

This column just keeps getting more and more embarrassing. I'm not sure how I got here. A music-loving young person, a professional in the music biz, and I've never listened to what almost everyone would put in the top five albums of the nineties (Or not. Let's debate!). My friend and bandmate gaped at me in amazement when I reluctantly admitted I'd never heard OK Computer before. When I said that I was going to be writing this column on it, he rightly pointed out to me that I wasn't going to be able to say anything new [...]

The Jackson is a brand-new Todd P venue alllll the way out in Long Island City, but these two bands make it worth the trip. Boogie Boarder plays spastic, schizophrenic noise rock (I also freaking love the artwork that goes along with all of their music). Their live energy is incredible and they put on an intense show (check out the blood on the drum in the photo). Real Estate is another project of one of my faves, Ducktails . They also play dreamy noise rock. If you don't want to [...]

I first discovered Math the Band for my college radio show on BTR. They play synth driven dance rock, and are a lot of high energy fun. For instance, some of their song titles include "Let's Hear It For Capitalism," "Following All of the Rules Is Not A Crime," and the classic "Dinosaurs Were Made Up By the CIA to Discourage Time Travel." One of their lyrics is, "I'm so lucky that none of you realize I'm singing karaoke and there's no talent involved at all." It's funny, it's a great comment on the state of electro music [...]

I learned two incontrovertible facts last night. 1. Southpaw is a terrible venue for taking photographs. 2. Pattern Is Movement is awesome. I really like Southpaw. It's a nice place to see music, but the height of the stage and the lighting make taking pictures really difficult. Which is too bad, because Pattern Is Movement is one of the most interesting acts I've seen recently. First of all, these two guys are so LIKABLE. For instance, the first thing they said when they got onstage was "Is there a way to manipulate these lights to make us look...uh...less fat?" The [...]

Finally, this week is starting to heat up. This is an intensely good lineup tomorrow night at the Bell House. I 100% plan on being there. 1. The Bell House is awesome. 2. I booked My Teenage Stride at Olde Club nearly two years ago now, and they're one of those "little Brooklyn bands who could," which I'm very glad to see are still kicking around. They play pleasant indie-popish tunes, and Jedediah Smith seems to have a steady, constant style of songwriting that I think anyone can enjoy. 3. The Drums . I went to go [...]
