Last week I applied for the marathon. Not the DeGrassi Sunday afternoon marathon, of which I've completed plenty, but rather the 2009 ING NYC Marathon. You pay $11 for a 30% chance to get in – a lottery of sorts (or, by definition). The winners get to pay more and then suffer for months and months and months. There might be a free t-shirt along with the additional $138 fee. All in all it's a good deal. People have all sorts of reasons why they run them. I'm in it for the free [...]
Ummmm. I liked the Dodos album quite a lot. (I supposed I could have just twittered this.)
Concluding one of Metafilter's podcasts a few weeks back was a song that I immediately took too. While I've never took the time to sift the submissions from MeFi's users, I searched out the song that was used. Turned out it was a cover of a song from another Mefite. Here it is. Simple, but charming. ORthey - Flyball's Lament (mp3) Mefi Thread. And here's the original, vastly differnt. The Great Big Mulp - Flyball's Lament (mp3) [...]

I'll be checking out the Muslims at Mercury Lounge in precisely one hour, but it won't have the luster of free booze like Thursday's show. Also Thursday is El Ten Eleven at Knitting Factory Old Office (8:00). Love love love that band. They rarely play here, so catch them while you can.

~~NO SPOYLERS HERE~~ I dragged Megan to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Castles last night. Opening night Times Square. I nearly shit my pants during the previews. The sound there is INTENSE. Better than IMAX it turns out. I would cover my ears if I wasn't squeezing Megan's hand in terror. Freaking Kung-Fu Panda. The first few scenes of the feature film (from henceforth refered to as the FF) will remind you how cheesy it all is -and was. If you don't remember the cheese, or [...]
I just came across this old WFMU blog post about Van Morrison's Bang Records Contractual Obligation Session. In order to fulfill his obligation to his early solo label Bang Records,Van Morrison sat down in 1967 or so and cranked out 31 songs on the spot, on topics ranging from ringworm to wanting a danish, to hating his record label and a guy named George. Make sure you get past the first few tunes - it takes him a few to get cooking. "You Say France and I Whistle" is one of the best song [...]
These are surprisingly sad and hilarious. Garfield comics with the lovable cat removed. Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolor disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Many more here .
I've been fairly undecided up until now about which candidate I would rather see in office. I think a woman president would be a great thing for America and two weeks ago was leaning towards Clinton. Things have changed since then. I've seen the type of traditional dirty politics she plays and I don't agree with that. My looming concern over her vote for calling Iran's military forces a "terrorist organization" bugged the heck out of me. But on the other hand, she seemed she would have more experience in running the nuts [...]
Legion of Rock Stars is the cover band that I would probably be like if my Rock Band buddies and I started a real band. Danzig's "Mother" Bonnie 's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Speaking of cover bands. Thermals are playing their karaoke set this week . Not sure if this is final [...]

Instead of posting a Indie Rock Christmas mix which tend to generally suck, I'll once again link to DJ Riko's Christmas mix from 2005. The only songs I skip are Bright Eyes (blehck!) and the "Snowflakes" song (yawn). But other than that it's really spectacular and much more solid than the one he made last year (although that too has some gems). I haven't yet sampled the other ones he made from 2002-2004, but I'll get right on that and report back here. Rapidshare link to DJ Riko's Merry Mixmas [...]
I shouldn't be doing this, but I'm posting a band that someone actually sent me. I'm sick of reading emails from bands. Not that I read them. But they still take up space in my inbox. I have to read who sent them before I delete them. So a guy asked me to give Slow Runner a listen, and since he pinned me against the wall and since I wasn't busy at the moment, I did. They are from South Carolina or thereabouts. I like them well enough. Reminds [...]
My CMJ week truly started off a day earlier with a free concert thanks to Rhapsody (of whom which few in attendance actually knew what they did). For those who don't know, they are the Rent-to-Own of the online music world. Without the "Owning" part. A tight and talented by otherwise boring Brooklyn band name American Babies started the night. It was a trait, I'd experience many times over the week: yeah you sound fine and all, but I'd never chose you play your songs on [...]
I was musing over the status and future of this space yesterday, wondering if it was finally time to head into the ole electrical closet and throw the Big Switch. Like a belly-up goldfish circling in its own urea, this site has become a shameful reminder that I'm just as fallible as my anonymous commentors. I still get some great one's from Fall Out Boy fans from time to time, and that warms my heart. But give in, I shall not. It's a different world we are living in today. To forsake it [...]
I'm so happy. Show Info. Richard Hawley: Website / Myspace .

Tara emailed me this ebay auction for a rock band , and I agreed with her, this is one intriguing listing. I almost wish a friend of mine would bid so we could all go and rock the shit out. I mean, I have friends in bands already, but I'd love to see Jeff front his own Madina Lake cover band. The terms: -A photoshoot with the band done by a professional photographer (probably thelovelybrenda.com). -One full day of rehearsal (minimum). -A band listing with you as the frontman [...]
It's hard to believe it's been over a week since Dan Deacon, White Williams and Girl Talk played their one-two shows at Webster Hall and Bowery, and I feel I've just barely recovered. I went to the late late show, and I nearly lasted the entire time. I left during Greg Gillis's last "song". You don't get a trophy if you stay till the end and I had a put in a great night already. Earlier that week, Amrit convinced me to get there early for White Williams who S'Gum's been [...]

Eagle Seagull [ website / myspace ] are back in NYC this week from their homestead in Nebraska. If you dont know them still, you really should. They sound like Sunset Rubdown but they formed pre-them, so they arent a rip off. They are good live too. Eagle Seagull - I'm Sorry But I'm Beginning To Hate Your Face [mp3] Rest of their tour: Sep 10 @ Schubas Tavern Chicago, Illinois Sep 12 @ Union Hall Brooklyn, New York Sep 13 @ Great Scott Allston, Massachusetts [...]
