Hello friends. Below is basically my year end breakdown. I could write essays on a bunch of things that 'happened' in 2009, but instead I'll try to make some clever comments about them instead. This year end wrap-up will take the form of a best of list. My 20 best songs of the year. ----------------- Phoenix - 1901 My favorite song from my favorite album of 2009. My favorite active band, hands down. There's nothing watered down or bubblegum about these guys, they [...]

Now that 2009 has drawn to a close and we're getting into full swing on 2010 Josh and I wanted to put together a list of our favorite tracks from the past year. Here is mine, loosely ordered, with some comments about each track. I won't call this a "best of" list because frankly I don't consider myself almighty enough to rank what songs were the "best" from the year...but these are the tracks that resonated with me the most. (A quick sidenote. We're only linking to 6 of the songs here, and ones that we know are [...]

We've been paying close attention to Cavaliers of Fun for quite a while now. For one reason or another we haven't gotten around to devoting a post to him until now. In our opinion, he's a true talent and one to watch very closely in the next couple of years. His ear for melody, desire to push boundaries, and keen knack for songwriting makes us think he's got a very bright future. We thought enough of him that we commissioned him to do a remix for the NightWaves single, Fascination, from our compilation 'LA Lights'. A [...]

Lights Over LA (what can I say, their name caught my attention) sent us over a couple tracks that they've been working on of late. I noticed a couple cool blogs have already posted these, but after taking a listen to their remix of Delphic , I felt like it definitely had a good place right here on the Binary blog. As best I can tell, these guys generally make LosAngeles-Banger-Style-Music. For this remix of Delphic, they took a 180 and turned it into a Fred Falke-ian jam (it sounds quite similar to Falke's [...]

Well, 2009 is coming to a close. Of all of the 'nostalgic' and 'sunny' electronic artists to release songs in the year, the glo-fi genre seems to have received the most praise. Neon Indian and Washed Out were universally praised and were arguably the two biggest alt music darlings of the year. Unlike the clear, shimmering synths of dreamwave, glo-fi relies on dreamy samples and layers of fuzz and filters, achieving its nostalgia via a humid sound that takes listeners back to cloudy memories of childhood fun. Seems to me we'll probably start hearing a lot more of this hazy, [...]

We introduced you to NinetyNine way back a few months ago. I wish I could remember exactly how we found him. If memory serves me right, he and Fabian and Alfa somehow all connected on myspace. Alfa fell in love, and soon after 99 became a friend of the family . To recap, NinetyNine is from Calgary, and one of the many amazing producers that have been working really hard from our northern neighbors. NinetyNine makes music for boys that want to fight. For girls with too much black eyeliner. [...]

Ahhhh, the end of December, what a crazy time. This month has been crazy for everyone I'm sure, and I'm no exception. I moved to a new apartment at the beginning of December but I've spent like literally 24 hours there this whole time. The last few days of November I was scrambling to even find a place to live, and within a matter of four days I found the place, signed the lease, and moved seven years worth of LA possessions into my new pad. A day later we left for our Pacific Lights tour with Keenhouse [...]

I remember hearing the first two Neon Indian songs on GvB. From the first lines it was obviously Alan's work, and somehow more fitting to his songwriting than either Vega or Ghosthustler. I think took a while for him to really find a sound that he could really just float in. The entire Psychic Chasms LP feels like the true place where his voice belongs. Kyle and I have had many a conversation about what makes the best albums so great. How the best are always a time capsule of a moment in time, one creative vision described [...]

OK. The tour is over. A whirlwind of positive memories and firsts for Keenhouse and LexiconDon . A big thanks to everyone we met along the way. I haven't decided how much to really cover it on this blog, so I think for now we're going to go back to just posting good tracks and reviews. If you guys would like to see some pictures from the tour, we'll be posting an album from the Binary facebook page sometime in January. In any case, we are back, and I've got a whole bucket of tunes [...]

(NOTE: So, Kyle and I are on tour with LexiconDon and Keenhouse right now. We'd like to keep the good blog-ship running, so for the next couple weeks we'll still be posting songs, but with pictures from our adventures around the west coast. We will be back with the solid writeups and pictures you're accustomed to, but for now, settle for some stellar tunes and brief musings from the road.) Tour Journal 3. (Seattle, WA) [...]

Binary is a great number of things, all of which in one way or another are aimed at bringing great music to people who share a passion for music like we do. The blog, obviously is one of the main avenues to bring new music to a lot of people. We release some records and have a stable of artists that play around LA, again, just trying to bring some great music to people. What we've been waiting for, for the last year, is the time when we could take the Binary philosophy on the road. LA is, despite [...]

Two stellar remixes of the NightWaves tune Fascination today. One from blog superstar MMMatthias (seems like he's everywhere!), and another from the cruelly under-appreciated Yuri's Nominee . These two pair up quite nicely alongside one another given that their takes on the track really take the song to entirely new places. Lets start with MMMatthias take. NightWaves - Fascination (MMMatthias Remix) [...]

Here's another track that received its 15 minutes of blog fame about a month ago. Of course everyone has moved along by now, only to leave this track somewhere in the graveyard of their bloated iTunes. Well, screw that. This track is too good to deserve that fate. With so much crap floating through the blogosphere, its a shame that really good tracks get the same amount of exposure as a lot of mediocre stuff that pushes it the quality aside. Anyway, here's to giving this track a bit more of a listen. Featuring quality synthwork and emotional [...]

Annnnd we're back, with a great tune from Russians Xuman . I am slowly becoming alarmed at the great quality of music coming from Russia. Between Xuman and Tesla Boy, I'm starting to wonder if there are a bunch of Swedish people moving to Moscow. This is serious pop music right here. There's something about over-the-top, almost cheesy pop that only people in Sweden, Norway, and Russia can pull off. For some reason they dive in so hard, with all of their heart, that you can't help but take them seriously. Tesla Boy's EP was so polished [...]

We're back with a couple more really great remixes of "Fascination" for you guys. Really it's hard to rank all the remixes that Binary got for this song, especially since it's a song that is close to the heart for Josh and I , but I will say that I really really love these two and they're near the top of my list. All the remixes bring their own unique angle to the song, and these two are no exception. [...]

GLOVES was responsible for one of our all time favorite dreamwave remixes ever, for Van She's 'Changes', which ended up on our Dreamwave Hour 2. While laying back for a bit, they've recently returned, releasing a new single and few new remixes. Today we've got our favorite of the new remixes, this one for The Scare's song, Could Be Bad. Featuring vocals reminiscent of The Presets, quick sample stabs, and pumping discofunk bass, its a track that primed and ready to get your night started right. [...]
