If I were 16 years old I would have the biggest crush on Christoph Andersson . Forget Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers (are they even relevant anymore?), the Glee people, or whoever else gets the teenyboppers' palms sweating; I would be gaga over Christoph. First there's the name. He's from New Orleans but has a name straight out of Europe, which is inherently dreamy for any American teen girl. Then—100 times more importantly—there's the music. Sexy, catchy, danceable, happy, cool, poppy, marketable, just-a-step-away-from-genius: all adjectives I'd use to describe it. Finally there's the age; he's only 19. In a [...]

The Hood Internet's Trillwave mix tape was designed for "the party after the afterparty," and track 'It Was A Rainy Day' was made for floating down Crenshaw atop a cloud of bubbles fitted with hydraulics. It's become a daily ritual to check and see if any new tracks have been posted by the Chicago based duo, who are responsible for bringing hip-hop back into my life, even if it's been significantly modified. Probably the most talented of the mash-up DJs, ABX and STV SLV love contradictions, like Ice Cube barking the lyrics to 'It Was A Good [...]

Today I want to talk about the holidays. 2011 is upon us, the sun is shining through the window on this fresh new LA morning. This year seems like a year of rebirth, doesn't it? Over the new years week I feel like the only thing people were saying was how much better 2011 is going to be and how forgettable and unfortunate 2010 was. Personally I didn't think 2010 was that bad, but I do have some high hopes for what lies ahead. The excitement is rising around Binary headquarters as we've got a string of projects coming down [...]

What can I tell you about the Grecian duo Keep Shelly in Athens ? Well I hate to break it to you, but the band is going for that mysterious vibe. There is not much out there on the talented Athenians other than what I just mentioned (duo from Athens if you missed it). Their debut 6 track EP In Love with Dusk was released in December via Forest Family Records (the Gorilla vs. Bear label). Forest Family has released some fantastic material in its short life so far including The Cults [...]

Off MGMT's 2010 album Congratulations , 'Siberian Breaks' is an adventurous tune that conjures visions of foofy flower dresses and 70's San Fran swagger. 'Siberian Breaks' got the Ed Banger All Stars (consisting of boss man Busy P , the always funky Breakbot , and So Me ) remix treatment, and and the result is a funked up hippie track that fits any proper sunny day mix. Try not to float away to warm day dreams of a cheerful island paradise while listening to this. MGMT - Siberian Breaks [...]

It's been a hell of a year for Starsmith . Brilliantly remixing anything he can get his hands on, while building electro-pop queen Ellie Goulding's incandescent castle, Starsmith's signature energy has made him a highly coveted studio mind at the moment. I began paying attention after hearing his reworking of Twang's 'Barney Rubble,' and his remix of N.E.R.D.'s 'Hot N Fun' is now a cherished souvenir from a memorable summer. His brief resume of excellent production work, and the sweeping theatrics of Ellie Goulding's Lights, was more than enough to compel me to listen up as the solo material began to [...]

James Harris has been close to Binary's heart for what feels like years. From his earliest recordings as Hemingway , we've been a believer in his talent. Given enough time and hard work, we've always thought his potential as a producer was off the charts. When the opportunity came along a few months ago to help he and Bit Funk put together a West Coast tour, we jumped at the chance. Over the course of a week, we had some good time to spend with James and Steve (Bit Funk). Of particular surprise were Hemingway's DJ sets. [...]

In honor of Binary's grand resurgence (we're bringing the blog back in a big way) I'm taking a moment to break from our typical 'dreams, love, and starry nights' discourse. For those of you who prefer their music a little more G-rated, skip this one. For the rest of you, a question: have you ever ridden the white horse? If you haven't, don't start now. If you have, here's a song to blow you away. I've got cocaine running around my brain. Escort - Cocaine Blues [...]

These days, it seems that Mr. Vaugn Oliver of British Columbia can do no wrong. Everything U-Tern touches seems to turn in to a shiny, twirling disco ball. He's a superb DJ, producer, blogger (who isn't?), web radio DJ , and now part of this disco powerhouse that is Oliver . Oliver is the combo of producers Oliver Goldstein ( Oligee ) & Vaughn Oliver. This first song that they've released, 'All Night,' is a fine piece of smooth disco goodness that doesn't fall an inch short of tremendous. Take a solid listen. [...]

From Leather jackets and high fashion photo shoots to a night in Hollywood I can't remember...that is what I feel when I listen to Tiger Love . Their self titled musical genre, "Gimme Something 2 Dance 2," is bound to reach runways and dance floors in the coming year. Electric bass guitar, power drums and robotic synths come together to form a unique sound that actually makes you feel... well... not so 'Under control.' Tiger Love - Under Control [...]

Muffin has been at the very top of my 'artists to watch' list since I first heard "Beach Road" back in February. He's also been near the top of my 'to be blogged' playlist on iTunes since I heard Astronaut Candy this summer. Muffin is my secret weapon when I DJ and he's my go-to guy when I need some extra epic motivation music. His tunes are like cocaine for emotions, they amplify whatever you're feeling 1000x. They can take you pretty much wherever you want to go. I would rank him as one one of our genre's great [...]

I want to address what is becoming an increasingly popular style of electro house. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it doesn't have it's own name. I've heard a few attempts at coining one and none of them sound quite right. If you've been on the Beatport electro house chart in the last six months, trust me you've heard it. Think Dirtyloud, Porter Robinson, Alex Mind, Spencer and Hill, Skrillex, and -to a lesser extent- Wolfgang Gartner and Pance Party. I can totally understand how some of it might seem like an amateurish and exceedingly ironic attempt at "innovation," but [...]

Here's a combination for the ages. In the first corner, for the first time on the Binary Blog (sorry we've been holding out on you guys), we have Ghosts of Venice . He's a 23-year-old producer/DJ based out of Leeds who's been bringing pure, unadulterated disco back to the dancefloor since his debut last year. In the second corner we have the prolific Binary favorite Bit Funk , who has been churning out new material and remixes like butter the past few months-hallelujah. Both producers have quite the ear for grooveable rhythms and a healthy nostalgia for bygone [...]

KIT is a nifty little electrock group from Paris, France. Horseshoe crabs are arthropods that live in shallow ocean waters. This song by the former, about the latter, is a friendly little pop tune fit for a bedtime or rainy day mix. The band seems to have formed sometime in the last few years, and they are starting to make some songs that people are really paying attention to. Citing influences of Blonde Redhead, Metronomy, Hot Chip, PJ Harvey, and Radiohead on their Facebook, members Audrey, Quentin, Fred, and Mathieu perform live as a 4 piece that [...]
All of us at Binary are extremely excited about tonight's show at the Echoplex, celebrating our friends at TILT's 3rd anniversary. The bill is absolutely stacked: Jamaica, French Horn Rebellion, Parallels , and Binary's own NightWaves will all be performing. There will also be four DJ sets, including one by Short Circuit . I don't know about you, but as I read each name on the bill my jaw dropped successively lower; this is a lineup not to be missed. Jamaica are fresh [...]

My last post was on the wonders of Wolf Gang and let me just mention they are even better live. We will be seeing a lot more of them in the future. Anyway David Fridmann, producing genius credited with acts like Flaming Lips and MGMT, is not only working with Wolf Gang, but he is also mixing Gypsy and The Cat's debut album - this dude has quite the impressive resume. Gypsy and The Cat are two talented Aussies who of course... starting making music in a garage in Melbourne. Xavier Bacash and Lionel [...]

Today we have two stellar songs from Cherry Chapstick , a three-piece band from Kingston, Ontario (or Montreal, depending on who you ask). Formed in the spring of 2009 by Julian Flavin, Evan Mullen, and Nigel Ward, they have a self described sound of "your mum running a bath at 9 in the evening as you lay in bed a nervous 6 year old child." That's pretty good, but how about the more pointed description from their bio - "Cherry Chapstick blends shoegaze and indie rock elements with a provocative electronic backbeat." Whatever synthy, hi-fi, dreampop-rock words you choose [...]

I have been eagerly awaiting another quality tune from Wolf Gang , and why not? From 'The King and All of His Men' to 'Pieces of You' and 'Back to Back,' every track so far is a gem displaying Wolf Gang's signature high, soaring vocals. The new single 'Lions in Cages' is no exception. Max McElligott is a young Brit who started pumping ear tingling melodies out of his bedroom, and now he is working with Dave Fridmann - known for his work with The Flamming Lips, Weezer and MGMT. The Fridmann produced 'Lions in Cages' is Wolf Gang's [...]

A fresh new Bit Funk original, courtesy of Shiny Disco Club Presents: Millenium Disco (vol. 1) , was dropped into the world's lap last week, and it's about time we properly caught up with the Chicago producer's recent work. The song, entitled '9 Iron' delivers a solid dose of french house disco goodness with a tinge of laser-house to drop you into a futuristic sampling of what discotheques should have been like back in the '80s (I don't really know... I was in [...]
