Saturday, January 14, 2006 Nest - Nest EP I do a lot of snooping around on other blog sites and music review sites from day to day and when I find an interesting or unique sound, I like to write the band to see if I can get a copy of their work. One of these situations happened a couple days ago with Nest and their new EP. What I didn't expect was for the band to respond saying that they were familiar with this site. Small world. Nest is a Los Angeles based five piece which delivers elegant instrumentation [...]
In an attempt to try to bring closure to this site...
My wife and I have said yes to a new job that will be taking us to Goa, India for the next three years. We will be working with a new church that started up there a couple years ago. Because of this change (not sure of a consistent internet connection there, no way of receiving albums in the mail there, and less time to stay on top of this site) I will be bringing this site to it's proper end. I experienced many wonderful firsts and few regrets because of this site and [...]
Message...
This is a top secret message for the four people who are still visiting this site after this long lull. Stop visiting already!!! Actually, the lull is due to several things. All of these things are good things so nothing to fear. I will inform you more and fill in the gaps when I see you on the other side.
Rest
Moving, new job, and such. Posting will start back up in a couple days. In other news, I just got a Seagate 250 gig external hard drive. Woot! This is a big jump from the 20 gigs i had on my desktop for the past couple years. So now I get to spend the next couple days ripping everything and organizing my iTunes. Thanks.
A couple experiments...
Just a quick note to say that the radio is back in place on the sidebar. Also I am experimenting with the del.icio.us playtagger on my site. Now when you see an mp3 linked on my site, you have three options: 1. You can hit the play button to stream the audio 2. You can click the link to open a new window for the audio 3. You can save the audio by right clicking with your mouse and choosing "save link as". Here is an [...]
Portastatic - Original Film Score For Who Loves The Sun
Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and member of Superchunk (whatever happened to Superchunk anyway?), seems to be finding more and more ways to keep himself busy. Before the dust has even had time to settle on his 2005 release, Bright Ideas , he is working on a score for an upcoming film written and directed by Matt Bissonnette. This soundtrack consists of 22... I would call them musical snapshots. It's very easy to invision these songs side-by-side appropriate video footage, but the whole project also works quite pleasantly on its own. If you can imagine some [...]
New Grenada - Modern Problems
To me, they sound somewhere in between Enon and The Pixies. And that's a pretty wonderful place for four creative and blossoming musicians to find themselves. Modern Problems , their third full-length will be released via Contraphonic on June 13, 2006. (right click save link as) New Grenada - Meat Is Murder Mobile mp3 192 kbps New Grenada - You Said [...]
The Essex Green - Cannibal Sea
After listening to Cannibal Sea several times, I decided that I really liked it but that I would not review it. This is less confusing than it sounds. I figured The Essex Green was high enough on the indie name recognition totem poll that it really didn't demand my sites attention. But then I thought I might be taking myself too seriously and gosh if they don't sound amazing on this album! So I am going against my initial decision. Today, I was riding my bike, listening to these tracks and thinking about smoking $4 cigars. The simple [...]
The Electric Soft Parade - The Human Body EP
Thomas and Alex White have got me thinking. Often I hear a new album in the 10-14 song length range and my mind tends to start wondering "why is this album so long? Sure, they have some good numbers in here but 60 minutes of material?" That's hard for anyone to pull off. And on an average day, who can find the time to properly dedicate their interest and attention for that full lengther? It is thinking like this that has lead me to a point in my music listening that I have really come to appreciate the EP. Of [...]
Joy - Devil's Blues review at sctas.com
Well, my first review for sctas.com is up and ready for your thoughtful perusing. I'm excited for several reasons. Firstly, Devil's Blues made for a great first review. I got to spend about a week to actually properly process the album before writing up the review which is not a luxury normally allowed in this sites obvious format. I was able to get in contact with the lead singer of Joy to ask some questions about the album. Lastly, I had an opportunity to design the page layout for the review. I'm not sure how much intentional thought [...]

April All Wrapped Up!
In the fast paced world of Mp3 Blogging, sometimes its nice to take a look back and place emphasis on the highlights of the trip. In this post, I will attempt to point out some of the albums that have been reviewed on A Robot Cometh this past month that stood out for one reason or another. This is somewhat of a random process, but these are the albums that I keep going back to even after the review was over. I will also award the employee of the month for outstanding achievements in well-roundedness. And finally, I [...]
Daedelus - Daedelus Denies The Day's Demise
I first came to know about Daedelus and his work through a roundabout way. Kozyndan , two graphic artists from California, designed the album art for one of his previous EPs. After this I picked up his first album, Invention . Since then I have tried to keep track of his continuing releases and musical evolutions. Concerning song structure, Daedelus Denies The Day's Demise doesn't stray too far from his earlier work. He still works heavily with a multitude of soft noises and rhythmic sounds to develop lush layers and soundscapes. His softer side [...]
Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
I often wonder what it is that keeps bands going back to the same style album after album. What is it that keeps them working within the same boundaries in specific genres and sub-genres. This isn't always the case, by no means, with just a few popular examples being Radiohead, The Shins and My Morning Jacket. These three and many, many more have unexpectedly shifted gears between albums which has often had a nasty side effect of polarizing their fanbase. I can understand this need though to try new things and to experiment with your musical core. What does surprise [...]
The Shortwave Set - The Debt Collection
Think of Spring. Think of male/female vocals. Think of funky loops and mandolins. Think of unintentional baroque-triphop. The Debt Collection was released in July 2005 across the ocean but has yet to receive its much deserved statside counterpart. Why? New Site
I got bored and created a new banner. Along with it, I thought it might be fun to create a new blog specifically for all of them. Here . When I have the time, I want to add a bit of text to each one to share the background of their creation.
The New MobiBLU Cube 2
I have been working my MobiBLU Cube since December. It is the perfect mp3 player for that $125 range. 1gig, no stupid ipod restrictions on how you can use it, super small, doubles as a memory stick, and comes with a cool necklace style earbud set. And now I hear they are making some pretty neat improvements on this wonderful player. The Cube 2 will come in a 2 gig version with a color (somewhat color) screen. It also looks like the corners have been rounded off, the side buttons look less ipod-y and there is a design change on [...]
What was that last post all about?
Today, I had an itch to get in touch with someone from SCTAS to discuss possibly writing some reviews for them. We talked it over a bit over instant messenger and it looks like it's a go. I've been a fan of their site for some time now and am excited for the opportunity. I think what most excites me is the idea of writing a review for a different audience and in a different format. It will also allow me more time to think my way through a review since there [...]
