This weeks we bring you the audio of our recent interview with Stela Mozgawa from Warpaint. Faithful readers of TDOA know that we've been fans of Warpaint for quite a while. Whether it was our interview with Jenny Lee in 2009 or our decision to pick them as one of the "must see" bands of South By Southwest 2010, this band has been one of our favorites. Stella Mozgawa joined Warpaint in late 2009 and immediately amazed audiences with her drumming talent. With a history of working with some great bands in Australia before [...]

This one, does not go to eleven. I've never enjoyed going to high-end stereo shops. Invariably, the salesman will put me in a room with the latest John Mayer record cranked up to its' highest volume. Smiling, he will turn to me and say, "Sounds great doesn't it?". The Fruit Bats don't believe they need to impress you with volume. They impress you with their beauty; subtle and melodic. This is the antithesis of the mid-80's Sub Pop band, bashing your brains in with grunge. The plaid remains the same. It just [...]

If there's one thing we've learned since the inception of TDOA, it's that great music exists throughout the world. We elitist Americans are told that the only good alternative music comes from the U.S. and....maybe... England. Nothing could be further from the truth, as we've brought you great bands from France, Spain, Germany, China, Japan, Canada (did we mention the interview we're working on with a band who claims to be from Antarctica?). Now, here's The Ganjas from Santiago, Chile who rock and gaze and wear shoes, but not in any particular order. Think Swervedriver meets [...]

It's easy to call someone legendary, it's another thing for them to live the role. Exene Cervenka's role in the history of music earns her the title. Fronting the seminal LA punk band X, she was an amazing lyricist, compelling figure on stage and a powerful female symbol at a time when women weren't taken seriously in rock. Rather than resting her laurels on that amazing band, Exene has also worked as a solo artist, writer and artist. After a brief hiatus upon announcing her diagnosis of MS, she's come back stronger than ever to shake [...]

Each week, we bring you some new releases or songs that we think have flown under the radar. Frankly, we've been slacking lately and focusing on big name interviews. It's time to get down to basics and find some great new bands. This weekly feature has brought you bands like The Boxer Rebellion, Warpaint, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and some other bands that are now heralded by the mjaro music mags as the next big thing. TDOA readers are always ahead of the curve. Here's this weeks' dose. Who are [...]

Unorthodox is generally a patronizing term, used to describe someone doing something badly. In the case of Serena Maneesh, unorthodox describes the sense of vertigo your average pop music listener experiences upon listening to their works of genius. The premise of verse/chorus/verse is like a foreign language. The voice is an instrument. The instruments are tools to create a cacophony of sound meant to entice and enrapture, your ears happily bleeding all along. Frankly, any band that sites Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Spiritualized and George Gershwin as influences, deserves your undivided attention. Underneath the [...]

There may not be a better example of the futility in trying to label a band than Einstellung. Isn't Krautrock a label that's used to describe music that's too cerebral for most to understand? Hasn't shoegaze become a label that's used for bands' that are more concerned with music than fashion? Here's the thing. Frankly, we prefer our songs to be in the three to four minute range. After that, the ADD kicks in and we've moved on. So when we tell you that there isn't an Einstellung song that's shorter than 7 [...]

The Blues are #1! As iconic a figure as there ever was in the 90's, Jon Spencer led one of the greatest rock 'n roll bands of our generation. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (since 2004 known simply as Blues Explosion) is an American punk blues band, which was formed in New York in 1990. Singer Jon Spencer was previously the leader of the noise punk band Pussy Galore before hooking up with Judah Bauer (guitar) and Russell Simins (drums) to form the Blues Explosion, a band that was part of the 1990s alternative rock boom. This [...]

The Primitives were a British alternative rock/indie pop band from Coventry formed in 1985 with Tracy Tracy (born Tracy Cattell in Australia) (vocals), PJ Court (born Paul Jonathan Court, on 27 July 1965) (vocals, guitar), Steve Dullaghan (bass) and Pete Tweedie (drums). Their career was boosted when The Smiths singer Morrissey named them as one of his favourite bands. The Primitives emerged from the much-touted independent scene of the mid-Eighties that reared, amongst others, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, The Soup Dragons and The Wedding Present. They wore their influences on their [...]

For those of you who followed our suggestions and are watching some great new bands at SXSW, we're glad we could help you. But here's the thing: there's a herd of new bands that require your attention. Many of the bands we've featured in the past, didn't have an album, let alone a label deal. But bands like Warpaint, The Soft Pack and others are now hotly tipped in Rolling Stone and the other major music mags. So, here's our humble offering: a smattering of new music that we think will be "the next big thing" [...]

Pop hitmaker, cult hero, and rock iconoclast Alex Chilton has died. The singer and guitarist, best known as a member of '60s pop-soul act the Box Tops and the '70s power-pop act Big Star, died today at a hospital in New Orleans. Chilton, 59, had been complaining of about his health earlier today. He was taken by paramedics to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack. His Big Star bandmate Jody Stephens confirmed the news this evening. "Alex passed away a couple of hours [...]

Artists that appreciate the fragility of music, will always have a place in our heart. While the bombast and anarchy of The Sex Pistols or Nirvana have their merit, we find the subtlety of bands like Galaxie 500 create more lasting emotion for us. Formed in Boston in the late 80's, the trio of vocalist/guitarist Dean Wareham, bassist Naomi Yang and drummer Damon Krukowski crafted songs that made us weep with their beauty. We were thrilled to learn that all three G500 albums were being reissued on March 30th. Today, On Fire, and This is Our [...]

Over the course of the last three weeks, we've given you an A to Z preview of the best of SXSW. Our ears are still numb, after listening to mp3's of every single band playing the festival. With SXSW finally here, we thought we'd give you a round-up of the ten bands we deem to be "the best". Whether you're coming down to Austin or sitting at home in....London, Paris or Beijing, we suggest you check out these bands. Click on the band name to find out more about the band. In our opinion, these [...]

When making our list of spring movies that get us excited, The Runaways inevitably comes to forefront. The influence the band had on music and our love of Joan Jett make this a must see. So we're excited to be able to offer our faithful readers a prize package tied to the release of the film. The prize: A t-shirt, a poster from the film, a copy of Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway" by Cherie Currie and Tony O'Neill), a copy of "Joan Jet and the Blackhearts Greatest Hits" CD, [...]

When we first interviewed The Boxer Rebellion back in March of 2009, we found a band that was humble, yet clearly on the verge of greatness. The release of their second album, Union put them on the top of the iTunes alternative charts in the U.S. and U.K. despite not being signed to a record label. Since then, the momentum has continued to grow and with their appearance at this years South By Southwest, they are being touted as the "band to watch" by many of the major music magazines. Comparisons to early U2 and The [...]
