Photo by SESC Sorocaba Officially, Criolo is a rapper. Unofficially he is a bit of everything else. An ex-teacher who still lives in his favella (Grajaú), his album is a buffet of different sounds and flavors, including samba, MPB, soul, reggae, and more. As soon as I heard the first notes of his album opener, Bogotá, I knew I was in for something special, something different. I approached the album blindly - it wasn't until later in my listening experience that I realized I was listening to a proper rapper, [...]

After a football-filled day replete with all the raw emotions that accompany them, I'm retiring to bed with Coca o FSM echoing in my ears. Tass Bem, Pass Bem. You know the man, you know the drill. Happy Monday. Tass Bem, Pass bem. E boa semana que vem.

January 6th, 2012 was the first time I saw Angolan musicians perform a concert outside of Luanda. Kalaf, Conductor, DJ Riot and J-Wow, the latter two from Portugal, came to New York's Bowery Ballroom and I was there to see them with a huge Angolan flag and several of my closest friends. We got right up to the stage and must of been among the loudest fans - we kept calling out to Conductor and Kalaf and they kept coming over to shake our hands. I had never been to a Buraka concert before and it was one of [...]
It's what's playing on my stereo right now. Filipe Narciso is one of the two members of the Angolan-Mozambican afro-house duo known as AM Roots, and here he stars in the video for his song Chasin', shot and produced in Angola by Angolans (Geração 80, again). The video is shot in the streets of Luanda and has a few shots of such landmarks as the Ilha and Elinga. Filipe Narciso - Chasin' from Geração 80 on Vimeo .
Sixteen days after the start of 2012, I've finally been able to shake off my progressively debilitating 'writer's block' and my increasingly worrying inability to listen to much Lusophone music over the past couple of months. It came to the point that my cousin called me from Paris and called me out on the lack of posts. The man is right. There is a lot of music to listen to and so many exciting cultural and musical developments taking place in Angola, Portugal, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Brazil. 2011 was, however, a slightly tragic year for Lusophone music lovers, due [...]

This one is something special. When Coca released Apaixonado Jovem back in October I mentioned it was my favorite yet...I figured I might as well stop making such statements since O Ano Q Vem is as enticing if not more. Music for the soul. I felt it deep. The tempo, Coca's delivery, the backing vocals...it's exciting to see him move from strength to strength and consistently churn out songs of this caliber from week to week. Click below to get a taste of baby-making soul music made in Angola. O Ano Q [...]
For a long time I'd listen to this song in the early morning to help me wake up. It reminds me of the good times I spent in Cape Town and the friendships I made there, including this one with Amarildo, also known as SupaSound, and his brother, who also raps. They're among the very few Mozambicans I can call friends. I'm glad to be finally able to share this video with you now that it's complete, since I've been itching to post it for quite awhile but unfortunately had an incomplete version. I'll leave you with Good Guy by [...]

There are not many Angolan singers quite like Aline Frazão. Turn on the radio in Luanda or Lubango or Benguela on any given day and you're hard pressed to hear anything quite like her. She's one of the country's most unique talents and her debut solo album, Clave Bantu, further cements her position as one of Angola's most exciting musicians. Some weeks ago she asked me what I thought about the album so far. This is what I emailed her: "…I've heard Clave Bantu some six times from start to finish, including on my bus trip [...]

Photo by Cláudio Lwakuti I found out about Y'akoto through a post on Luanda Jazz Festival's Facebook page . It was love at first listen, as soon as she started crooning into the microphone. Jesus. That voice...her accent is glorious, her delivery is unique, her demeanor drips soul and class. It's that type of throaty cadence that I love. Y'akoto is a half German, half Ghanaian chanteuse that reminds me of Mayra Andrade in that both have lived and traveled extensively throughout West Africa and Western Europe, and both possess the type [...]

Last week our partners Zarpante released their first podcast. It's a collection of quality, alternative Lusophone music, and contains a familiar voice or two...watch out for Leonardo Wawuti, Coca o FSM, and other gems. Happy listening. Feliz [...]

Only Aline to shake me out of this rut. I wanted to post this song when it came out, as the first single of Aline's new album. But as you've probably noticed, posts have been hard to come by on this space. There are many candidates at which to assign all culpability: this incredible city of New York, the new job, other side projects...but exposure to fascinating lusophone music is not one of them. And Aline's new CD, Clave Bantu, is a testament to that. I've been listening to it since before it came out (maintaining this site has its [...]

This one's among the top three 6tacool jams by Coca so far. I've been playing it all week. What a surprise to hear him show off his rapping skills. Very well done, Coca. Gostei.
