Described on Soundcloud as a ‘BalearoDiveBomber’, this is a nice little slo-mo house number to start your day with. The perfect accompaniment to my early morning builders tea.
Ace, dirty Soul II Soul rework from Leftside Wobble . Always dug that vocal. “Finally got round to making a few final tweaks on this Soul II Soul/Detroit basement workout and in the process decided to give it away as a free download. Kept it nice and raw too as that seems to be it’s dark charm!” Looks like it’s still up for a free DL too !
If there was ever a song to put a spring in your step, then this is it. It’s 1974, it’s the deep south, it’s The Marshall Tucker Band. Yeehaw!
Put on those headphones, turn down the lights, open up the Vicks, and let the spirit of 1994 flow right through you. Like a long-lost session track from the Music for the Jilted Generation sessions.
Charles Webster meets Danny Wang meets Brennan Green. Outcome; more disco than you can shake a very big disco stick at. Surprised to find it’s not one from our archives.
It’s Saturday. It’s wet. Stay inside and listen to some Mancunian things that bang and wobble.
Low slung bass. Heads down. Serious.
Once you’re not running a weekly night, it’s nice to be able to consume music at your own pace again, free from the overwhelming terror that you’re missing out on every great new track / label / genre. And and even more wonderful consequence of that is hearing tracks that were no doubt massive when released (2009) for genres you kinda missed out on (dubstep). In short - you’ve probably already heard this. But if you haven’t, prepare for a “when the hottest London producers of the 90s meet their 00s counterparts” slab of bass. [...]
Beyonce Knowles Alt. little sister Solange Knowles has collaborated with Chairlift’s Aaron Pfenning on a forthcoming DFA release. I like DFA and I also like Solange Knowles. I like this. That bit where her vocal creeps in then explodes… Nicely done. What do you think? Will it become a crossover hit? Is it too low-key for mainstream success? Could she become as relevant as her sister? Are these too many superficial questions? Should I stop reading Hipster Runoff?
Following on from what Kev was saying about Manchester, I’ve not been to any other place in the world that can rock basements like Manchester based DJs/clubs/nights. If you disagree with this, then let us know. I’d love to test your suggestion! This track from El Diablo’s Social Club organiser/DJ Neil Diablo, sums up the ethos and gives me shivers. You’re in a basement, in the groove, a deep track like this is playing, then about 4.40 mins in - BOOM, it’s on. Do yourself a favour and buy this [...]
The number one reason for resurrecting this site was a back to basics approach to sharing music amongst a small group of friends. It was this track that lit that flame really - I came across this folky cover of Sebastian Tellier’s La Ritournelle, the original of which was such a huge tune in 2004, especially in the tight-knit Manchester scene. I remember working in Piccadilly Records at the time, and if I remember rightly no 12” sold more copies during the whole decade.
Another one from the BFF archive, this is a lovely slab of glitchtronica, taking one of Damon’s most heartfelt moments, layering it up step-by-step beautifully for the first 2 minutes, and then completely blissing it out for the remaining 3. Perfect for a balmy Sunday evening in London, or wherever you are.

Hey, long time no speak! I know we said we were back before, but this blogging lark is kinda tough now that me and Mark have gotten real jobs. So if this pops up in your RSS feed, and you think "ah I remember those guys, they were kinda alright" then thanks, we love you too. But there's a reason for this post - Best Foot Forward is coming back for a little shindig, and it's only a week away. We've moved from Manchester, and from Saturday, but will be making a London debut on Thursday 5th [...]

Lindstrom & Solale - Baby I Can't Stop (Aeroplane Remix) As the previous 8 month old post attests to, everything has been changing in 2009. Mark is making a name for himself selling fancy gingham from Sri Lanka , Chris is about to embark on the next chapter of whatever the hell he's planning, and I've been doing the rounds in London Town (or sitting in and watching US TV boxsets ). Hence the blog has been lying here, bewildered and alone like a goth at a wedding. [...]

Lord Kitchener - London is the Place for Me (MP3) Pulp - Mile End (MP3) So that's it then - in 2 weeks time I'll be saying my goodbyes to the homely grey Mancunian skies, and heading down to "that fancy London place" to for the next chapter of my so-called life. And in anticipation of this, I've been digging through some London records, and thought these two sum up the mood perfectly. Lord Kitchener, with lovely piece of upbeat calypso, fills me with hope of the possibilities [...]

Moondog - Fujiyama 1 (MP3) Okay, so I may have a slight propensity for going on a little too much about the same old stuff , drunkenly gassing-on all the way through perfectly ace Phantom Band gigs much to the chagrin of a chap from Hull (ask Rob: I've already apologised and am blaming going out straight after work) and, well, just talking a load of complete nonsense . But I do have my quiet moments.

Bright & Early - Love Is Overtaking Me (MP3) Bright & Early - Planted A Thought (MP3) I have a new favourite pop group and they're called Bright & Early. Unfortunately they existed for about a week in the late 80's and to the best of my knowledge only two of their songs ever made it on to a release (well, to the knowledge of Discogs too!). Fortunately for posterity's sake they had a no-talent bum singer/guitarist/cellist/songw riter in the band [...]

Royksopp - Eple (Black Strobe Remix) (MP3) The Norwegian duo are getting a lot of hit heat at the moment after their new LP has leaked online alongside a rather hot Holy Fuck remix , and it's prodded me to dig out this old remix of "Eple", from way back in those hazy electro-fueled nights of 2003. It was a simpler time back then, when Black Strobe's Ivan Smagghe was riding high and at the top of his bleep-infused game. There's a great flow to their take - it slows down, it speeds [...]

Phoenix - 1901 (MP3) MGMT are so last year, and things are looking pretty cloudy for Empire Of The Sun. On May 25th Phoenix rise, well, phoneix-like from out of the ashes of “It's Never Been Like That” with “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoeniix” and if 1 minute and 20 seconds into ‘1901’ is any indication: folks, they're back. Master bastards indeed. * Apologies for the swearing but if music can’t make you giddy every once in a while then what’s the point? (And besides, it’s from [...]
