Forever , the new three-track EP from the Los Angeles sisters known as HAIM , has been releasing some seriously funky Kate Bush vibes into the atmosphere of late. Danielle, Este, and Alana Haim gracefully step from layers of jumpy R&B flavored harmonies on opener "Better Off" to the sensual call-and-response burn of "Go Slow" and the epic closer and title-track, "Forever"—a sharp and masterful cut of bass-driven grooves and dance floor candy. "Forever" is a song you can't just play once. In fact, it's hard to stop playing. That handclap and synth breakdown near the 3:20 mark? Hips [...]

Here's the newest joint from Burger Records: a full-length from Philadelphia's The Tough Shits. The spirit here may be wild, abrasive, and ramshackle, but the band's jangly pop-punk numbers are expertly polished, filled with addictive and impossible-to-shake candy-eared hooks and melodies. The Tough Shits have put out 7-inches on Desert Island Discs in Seattle and another Ramo Records in Minneapolis—the latter of which features the hilariously great toe-tapper "Pretty Wild"—but this marks the band's first attempt at a long player, and judging from sneak peak single "Cats & Dogs," it should be a hell of a good time. [...]

We've been keeping close tabs on Austin's TV Torso of late, as the band puts the finishing touches on its forthcoming LP. According to an update on the band's Facebook page , they're still hammering away in Matt Oliver's Big Orange studio with about 18 songs left to complete. In January, we heard one track that's going to wind up on the record: the holy-shit-this-is-good jaw-dropper, "No Idea Why." Now, thanks to Oliver, we have another track from the recording sessions: "Big Flash, No Crash." According to Oliver, this is one that may not make it on [...]

"I know you think I'm morbid when I say / I hope you die by my side / The two of us at the exact same time." The lyric above is from Stockholm artist Molly Nilsson's song "I Hope You Die," and while it may read like melodramatic Rome and Juliet- inspired high school scribblings, over washes of synthesizers, punches of keyboard, and a hip-loosening snap of snare, it becomes a Cure-quality fix of potent goth-styled pop music: introspective, occasionally lyrically dreary, and an absolute blast to pump over the stereo. Nilsson's atmospheric and [...]

Everybody Taste loves us some Natural Child. Nobody spits booze, bongwater, or fire quite like this scuzzy punk-meets-country Nashville trio. In 2012, these Infinity Cat veterans will be dropping two records on another of our favorite labels, Fullerton, California's Burger Records. Burger—who already have a cassette version of the band's debut LP, 1971 , under their belts—will be reissuing the band's 7-track cassette Bodyswitchers in March and a new LP, For The Love of The Game , in May. Below, you can stream the first taste of the new full-length by way of riff [...]

Atlanta brethren Gentlemen Jesse Smith and Jared Swilley of The Black Keys split songwriting duties on The Gaye Blades debut LP, released last September. It's a classic affair that puts grimy pop and punk finishes over highly melodic 1950s-inspired rock 'n' roll. As far as I can tell, the album only exists on vinyl pressed via the good folks at Norton Records, but it's well worth the near bargin bin pricing at just ten bucks. Smith's sweet power-pop chops and Swilley's antagonistic streak lend a nice one-two punch to the flow of the record, which also includes a superb cover [...]

You hate the fucking Eagles. I hate the fucking Eagles. But Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak—here as her solo nom de plume, Flock of Dimes—reaches deep down into her man tone range for a beautifully sparse, androgynous take of "I Can't Tell You Why" that leaves behind The Eagles' 1979-set smooth combed hair vibe for something a little shadier, a little more secret—call it darkened alley love making music. According to Bmore Music , Wassner is currently in the midst of wrapping up her debut solo LP. While we wait for that beauty, you can stroll through the rest [...]

Mikal Cronin's a busy guy. Last year, the young west coast marvel released one of ET's favorite albums of the year via his sharply melodic self-titled debut. In 2012, Cronin has already released one 7" via Goner Records with a second on the way next month: a split with King Khan & The Shrines for Bruise Cruise . Apparently the yearly debauchery-laden garage-rock fueled cruise down to the Bahamas also includes perks like limited edition vinyl. Check out both tracks from the split below. Mikal Cronin - "Am I Wrong" [...]

In our current nerd dominated pop culture, the Twitter feed for Katy Goodman—the bassist for The Vivian Girls and master of all things La Sera—is a hysterical time capsule-like window into its consumption: rants and insights into everything from HBO's Game of Thrones to the graphic novel-adapted Walking Dead series and a host of shoot-em-up video games, some of which Goodman even reviews on her Tumblr. Why do I find that all so interesting? Maybe it's because Goodman—a tall beautiful redhead with an homage to The Ramones' song "Today Your Love, Tomorrow [...]

"This isn't fucking muscle bound fake tan guido shit. This is the real New Jersey. Pizza eating, beer drinking, chain wielding guido shit." — 1-2-3-4 Go! Records Allegedly Hoboken, New Jersey-based, Personal and The Pizzas are a band straight out of a comic book: Ramones and Stooges channeling punks with thick cartoonish accents and undeniably catchy superhero pop hooks. Take the anthemic horn-blasted "I Can Read," from its opening comedic monologue to the roaring guitar riffs and beaten-to-death chorus, the track sounds like it came off the soundtrack to an 80s B-movie about dyslexic alien [...]

Spencer Dunham of the Allah-Las sent over a mix of old reggae joints last night. He culled the selection from overlooked and forgotten vinyl records he discovered while working at Amoeba. I'm a huge fan of the loose and jazzy vibe of old ska and soul-brushed reggae—see posts on Slim Smith , The Skatalites , and Justin Hinds —and the Allah-Las' Catamaran 7" was Everybody Taste's pick for best vinyl single of 2011 , so yes, you might say this is a bit up my alley. Here's a few words on the compilation from Dunham: [...]

Everybody Taste favorites TV Torso posted a new jam to Soundcloud over the weekend: the sonically rich genre-melting gem, "No Idea Why." Frontman Matt Oliver—who also records a large chunk of Daytrotter's sessions in his Austin studio Big Orange —transmits his vocals with a generous dose of tremolo while pumping giant analog bass synths into this far out vision of pop music. There's a touch of Britt Daniel's raspy vocal delivery and notes of Oliver's former band with Bill Baird, Sound Team, but in the end, TV Torso is unquestionably its own unique beast: a calculated assault of rhythm, [...]

Few records have instantaneously reeled me in like the fiery, sharp-cutting power-pop of Gentleman Jesse's 2008 debut, the cover of which appropriately paid homage to Elvis Costello's This Year's Model . Songs like "All I Need Tonight (Is You)" and "The Rest of My Days" had touches of everyone from The Exploding Hearts to Paul Collins, all wrapped in Jesse's distinctive musical personality: lyrically playful, rhythmically driven, and overflowing with fearsome and addictive pop hooks. Jesse's been quiet of late. He released two 7"s in 2010, but now it appears we're finally getting [...]

Thanks to a tip from the always tasteful Gentleman Jesse, I've recently been listening nonstop to the punk-glazed power-pop offerings of Indiana trio The Happy Thoughts. The band put out its debut LP via Hozac Records last spring and it's difficult to put into words just how fun, addictive, and charming these songs are. Sprinkling a bit of punk grime over late 50s and early 60s rock 'n' roll staples like Ritchie Valens, The Bobby Fuller Four, and Buddy Holly, The Happy Thoughts have created a crisp and unapologetically cheerful summertime record colored with frisky beats, handclaps, and sharp sing-along [...]

Longtime Everybody Taste favorites Luna have digitally remastered and released the LPs Romantica, Rendezvous and the 2002 EP Close Cover Before Striking over on Bandcamp . Word on the street is the band may even try and repress a few of these classic records onto vinyl (we've got our fingers crossed over here). If you're a fan of the band's dreamy and mesmerizing pop music, former bandmates Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips have also been keeping busy as the duo Dean & Britta with the acclaimed and spectacular 13 Most Beautiful: Songs [...]

Los Angles shredder and songwriter extraordinaire Blake Mills—whose 2010 record Break Mirrors inspired the creation of our own Analog imprint—has been keeping busy touring with and opening for Lucinda Williams, playing shows with his former bandmates in Dawes, and recording a few exceptionally sharp covers with fellow musician (and girlfriend) Danielle Haim . Over on Mills' new website , you can snag an ace rendition of The Beatles' "Come Together," which features some killer guitar and percussive work by the pair. For Amnesty International's Chimes of Freedom compilation—which features 76 Bob Dylan [...]

New Paltz, New York's Breakfast In Fur —a member of our own Analog Edition family—released a brand new track yesterday as part of the Sunchoke collective's Winter Warmer compilation. The song, "House," is a blissfully fun sing-along colored with irresistible group-sung harmonies, bursts of homemade synthesizers, and a wonderfully light and swinging guitar line. All together, it's the perfect warming antidote for a cold winter night. Download the entire 17-track comp for free over on Sunchoke's Bandcamp . Breakfast In Fur - "House" [...]

Let me start by saying nothing in 2011 has come close to the affection I still have for my two favorite records of 2010: The Walkmen's masterful Lisbon and Blake Mills' so-good-why-the-fuck-haven't-y ou-listened-to-it-yet Break Mirrors . But that's not to say 2011 hasn't been a great year in music. In fact, I don't think I've ever discovered so many favorite new bands (Natural Child, Stone Darling, Breakfast In Fur, Marisa Anderson, Mikal Cronin, Bare Wires, Future Islands, Braids, etc.) in a single year. The internet has created so many minute niches catered by small communities, micro DIY labels, [...]
