First off apologies for the lack of a Friday Freebies post yesterday, a combination of going to the Twilight Sad and a teething baby meant that I just plain old ran out of time. Fear not though as it will be a double roll over next week. Anyway, that's enough apologies for one week, onwards and upwards with this weeks We've Got It Covered post which focuses on some of the Scottish artists that have been selected to play at this years South By South West (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. I appreciate that a lot of you will already [...]

Would you care to introduce yourself? I am Liam Cairns, the lead singer and songwriter for the band Kith & Kin. How would you describe the music you make? I guess it's a mix of different things. Thematically I try to use 'life' and 'experiences' as well as films and novels as inspiration for lyrical content. Stylistically I take a lot of influence American folk, 60s pop and rock. Specific artists and bands that [...]

When it comes to these weekly over posts I often find myself in a bit of a quandary as to what to write about, quite often I find myself just rambling about things that I have been up to during week. More often than not I just use these posts as a platform to mention a gig or a release that's coming up and other occasions it's all about me me me. If you're expecting something different this week then you're going to be a bit disappointed, which is also how I felt this morning to find out the news [...]

Invisibles On my hunt for freebies to share with you all I quite often find myself 'favouriting' tweets that mention free downloads from Scottish bands that might be worth checking out. Most of the time I tend to find something that I like or think's half decent, other times there's stuff that just that bad that I can't bring myself to write anything about it. So earlier in the week when I read about Invisibles, a collective conceived by JP Reid of Sucioperro and Marmaduke Duke fame, I did find myself pre-judging the songs. "They'll not be my [...]

One thing that I have learned about myself since starting this blog, is that I really should avoid writing reviews, as I don't think that they're really my forte. I don't really see the point in wasting your time and mine by rambling on and trying to find five ways to say that I think something's good. If it appears on here then you can take it for granted that I like it. Which in the rambling manner that I was trying to avoid, brings me to the new RM Hubbert album, 'Thirsteen Lost & Found'. As I am sure [...]

In my opinion one of the best things that came from the demise of DFs Connect Festival, would be the number of small boutique festivals that have sprung up to fill the void. Festivals like the Insider, Big Tent and I guess Home/Away Game offer something quite different to the norm, where you see the same old faces cropping up on cyclical periods. Yes, I am bitter towards Connect, as I still hold it responsible for the loss of Indian Summer, a boutique festival that ran for a couple of years in Victoria Park in Glasgow. Anyway, enough of [...]

There was a time when if I was still up at half six in the morning on a Saturday it would be because I was still up from the night before. Nowadays though, you're more likely to find me battling with my daughter as I try to get her to her breakfast, followed by several hours of CBeebies. It might not be very rock n roll and yes it is pretty tiring, but hey unless you've been up at that time you'll never know quite how funny it is to hear cartoon trains talking about have a 'chug wash'. As [...]

I don't think it's much of a secret that I really enjoy my annual trips up to Inverness for Scotland's largest music industry event, goNorth . Not only has it given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people and make contacts that I wouldn't normally have had the chance meet, but it's also been one of the most fun things I have been involved with since I started this blog. I am pretty sure that my liver is only just starting to get over the battering that it took after last years debauchery. Having originally been invited [...]

Admiral Fallow If you're headed off to the ABC tonight to see Admiral Fallow then you're in for a treat, I only know this as I saw them play a last minute intimate show in Glasgow last night. As a wee teaser, the band have me their new song 'Beetle In The Box' free to download, a corking wee tune it is too. You can download yourself a copy for free in exchange for your email address here . Ajimal I had fully intended to include this link in last [...]
As I was out and about last night I am running a wee bit behind with this weeks Friday Freebies (I'm currently getting it all drafted up). In the mean time here's a couple of ace new videos from Withered Hand and the Twilight Sad for you to enjoy...

In case you didn't already know, Glasgow five piece, French Wives are going to be releasing their debut album, Dream of the Inbetween', later this year on Electric Honey Records. As if that wasn't exciting enough for them, they're also going to be heading across the pond to play some shows in the States at this years SXSW Festival. As I am sure you already know, making such a trip isn't exactly cheap, so the band are putting on a few different fundraising nights to help fund their adventures. So if you're free this coming Thursday and you want to [...]

Some of you might recall that back on the second anniversary of this blog I decided to launch a record label, no not Olive Grove, those of you with good memories might recall that I put out an EP with I Build Collapsible Mountains. Then the whole Olive Grove thing kicked off and Peenko Records was put on hiatus. That was of course until now, as I am pretty chuffed to be able to announce that on the 20th February I am going to be releasing an album with my favourite folk-pop outfit, Randolph's Leap. The album was recorded predominantly [...]
