Shitgaze. No-fi. Regardless of whatever the flag-bearers of labeling struggle to label it, there's a new trend that's exploded in the blogosphere and onto the radars of the music press, from Pitchfork Media to Rolling Stone. As a fan of bedroom-made music and lo-fi records, I've been ecstatic to see a genre so greatly informed by indie-greats, such as My Bloody Valentine , Pavement , Neutral Milk Hotel , and Sebadoh , attain such a foothold in the music of 2009. If you've seen or heard of the aforementioned labels posted above [...]

Long time, no see blog. I figure a recent, radical show is as good a reason as any to write-up a quick new entry. Last night, I drove down from Kalamazoo to Pontiac to see recent blog-darlings The Pains of Being Pure at Heart play to a crowd of under fifty. The show was great. Armed with reverb, capos, open chords, and melancholy, the band excellently executed their shoegaze-infused, My Bloody Valentine -inspired brand of pop music. See the results for yourself... [...]

Well let's see, last time I blogged about Bat for Lashes it was April of last year when I linked her radical music video for "What's a Boy to Do?" With her new album Two Suns , coming out in April (and is currently circulating around the web), why not blog about her again? Here are two tracks off her forthcoming second LP as well as some interesting artwork for the album's first single, "Daniel"... Yes, that is the Karate Kid [...]

It's Friday and you kids are probably going to need some music to dance to, huh? Well thankfully for you, I've got my hands on some new MSTRKRFT off their upcoming LP which isn't officially out til Tuesday. The album is certainly worth the wait. Hell, it's fcuking fantastic. Reading the various interviews about their sophomore effort, one got the sense the Toronto duo was influenced by what Justice did for both the critics and basement parties. Much like [...]

Some excellent footage of Nine Inch Nails performing less than a month ago in Australia. Seeing stuff like this makes me 1.) Want to finally purchase my own MIDI controller 2.) Regret that I didn't see them during their last tour and 3.) Really appreciate how good Trent can make the band sound live, even with older material. For those with fingers far removed from the NIN pulse, "Burn" is off the Natural Born Killers soundtrack circa 1994. As an added bonus [...]

Sorry folks, I've been busy as of late. Blame Kalamazoo College, not me. Current academia = major headache. However, as I sit in the library, I'm going to put up some new content (and write-up more entries that will come out in the next two days). I've currently got this wonderful problem of having too much music that I want to share and I'll do my best to write about it instead of hording it all to myself. [UPDATE: JUST RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD ALL MUSIC FILES; I've decided to abandon MediaFire and its wily [...]

So my senior thesis is officially due in fourteen days. Once all that jazz is done with, I'll resume blogging full time. However, as I promised, I will post my top 25 albums of the year '08 between now and then with part 1 going up on Wednesday at the latest (Tuesdays are usually dedicated to editing/laying out the paper which absorbs more time that I'd like to mention here). Anyway, I wanted to take a moment to link every one to where they can find me on the innernet and post an mp3. Dig? [...]

Good tidings to anyone still reading! First off, happy holidays. Second, I realize that once I got back from California, regular blogging went to the wayside. But fear not, in the new year, this blog will be better than ever. We're talking daily posting good. We're talking actual new features good. We're talking me hosting so many albums and MP3s that your iTunes library isn't going to know what to do with itself. Oh yes, it's going to be a good year. Anyway, I'll get back into the swing of things in the next [...]
A fan of John Carpenter's The Thing and/or his radical synth-oriented self-produced soundtrack work? What about the 3 3/4-inch scale G.I. Joe toys you had as a kid? If neither of those sound interesting, than the following video and MP3 probably aren't for you. However, both sound equally awesome to me, which is why I'm implored to share (via Liz and Adam ). Zombie Zombie are a French electronic duo made up [...]

This week has been my last working week at the Los Angeles Times , and for that, I am sad. However, completely outside of my end-of-internship-woes, I've been on a Fugazi kick lately. So, feeling a little obliged to share some songs from one of my favourite bands, I've posted some videos and MP3s of America's #1 post-hardcore band out of Washington D.C. What I wouldn't give to be at one of the two shows seen below... First up is an oldie, a live [...]
