Website Myspace I first saw Jon Allen a couple of years ago in a support slot at the Academy. At the time I picked up a self-released EP of his. Now he's receiving constant support from BBC Radio 2, I might one day make a few quid from that impulse purchase. With a higher profile and appearance on Jools Holland about 150 people turned up at the Academy. Sensibly realising that most people had come to hear the one or two well known songs, Jon did [...]

Website Myspace Following The Moods onstage on wednesday, you could have been fooled at first that their fathers had invaded the stage. What followed however was accomplished, melodic country rock courtesy of the UK. The bands first album is currently in the mixing stage and judging on this performance and the enthusiastic response of the crowd, I won't be the only person checking it out. [...]

The Moods opened for Jon Allen at the Academy 3 on Wednesday. Wearing influences such as the Stone Roses on their sleeves, the band played a short set which was never short of ideas, but sometimes lacking in execution. Musically experimental, reminiscent of the Coral at their best, they are still a band finding their feet. When the lead singer finds his own presence and moves away from his Ian Brown / Liam Gallagher moves they could be a band to watch. Myspace Setlist 1. Oxygen 2. Happy [...]

And here is where the difficulty starts. Two shows on the same night and your team are also in action in the play-offs! Nightmare.... so touring schedules are checked and options in Sheffield, manchester and Liverpool are considered. If your not a football or Luke Doucet fan though, you could do worse than check out Ben's Brother at the Rescue Rooms. Touring in support of their new album, Ben's brother made an impression on me with the song 'Let Me Out' from their debut album. Despite having a distinctive voice and some very hummable songs, Ben's Brother were dropped after [...]

Luke Doucet is back in the UK on tour with his wife Melissa McClelland, and will be stopping off at the Maze next Thursday. I first caught Luke live supporting Josh Rouse a couple of years ago, when he was touring his break-up album 'Broken (and other Rogue States)'. He followed this last year with 'Blood's Too Rich' a more eclectic collection which still garnered strong reviews. As an appertiser check out this live recording from New York of 'One Too Many' featuring one of my all time favourite opening lines [...]
