If you remember in my article on Noah and the Whale's recent live performance (link) , I was upset because I felt "The songs from their debut were very acoustic and natural. It was full of violins, bells, acoustic finger plucking and cute girl boy harmonies. During the performance all the instruments were electric, so the intricate finger plucking that was present in all their songs was replaced by a mushy electric guitar. Sunset Rubdown's Dragonslayer which releases in late June has just leaked. Personally I think bands deserve to have control over release dates, but leaks are usually from album reviewers who get pre-release copies. So, in a way they do control the release. I'm posting a review and some accompanying tracks, but of course I'll take them down if the artist requests it. Most of the people who download the album are the same people who will be buying cd,shirts and concert tickets so, I don't think it's that bad. When you find that a band is producing songs on vinyl b-sides that better then any of the tracks most bands make on their albums, well you know you have genius. This song is awesome as is the band. This track was taken from the vinyl : Introducing Moonface (2009). So haunting, so beautiful. I can't wait for Dragonslayer. Rivers Cuomo is my hero. I remember a Toronto show where the entire crowd just starts chanting for El Scorcho. He's not always know for being fan friendly, but he has his moments. Amazingly , while they didn't sing the song, they performed Undone – The Sweater Song, but making the opening "talk segement" the beginning of El Scorcho instead of the typical party banter. The Rural Alberta Advantage is a band based in Toronto. This album is country music. Not George Strait, Billy Ray "Achey Breaky Heart" country. This is more like folk rock music that has its heart in the countryside. More specifically Alberta, Canada, the prairies. The music is very identifiable as Canadian. This album deals with living in a small town, leaving that small town and heartbreak. The songs are incredibly catchy and the singer has this amazing unique shrill treble voice that is just haunting. Mother Mother is a Canadian band from Vancouver. The concert was held in a small venue, Club L'ambi, with about 150 people in attendance. Mother Mother is a great band. Their tracks are full of these intense elaborate arrangements of voice and instruments. They used harmonizing as a key part of their music similarly to how The Beach Boys use harmonizing. I love the how for instance on their song "Train of Thought" the singer's harmonizing together makes you think your hearing the equivalent of a musical train. Pitchfork is a great music site, I find a lot of great stuff there. However, I've more then once seen simply crazy reviews of awesome albums. So I figured, that in some cases it should be necessary to go write new reviews for the albums I feel that Pitchfork gave undeserved flack to. I saw Sky Larkin open for Los Campesinos! on March 21,09 at La Sala Rosa. The place was fairly full filled with around 300 people. Normally I don't review the opening bands, but I had to do a concert review for these guys. I wasn't expecting anything really. I didn't even know there was an opening band. Opening bands usually aren't to die for but I really liked Sky Larkin. The members are cool and free-spirited.
