Simon/off - Ark

( pic link ) Sometimes I just have to let my inner drum nerd out for a little while. This is one of those times. Simon/off's track 'Ark' is out now and it's crammed full of dextrous, flowing, intricate drum programming, underpinned with simple but solid sublines.. It's out now as part of a compilation on Syncopathic Reocordings - click the link for more details on the release or play the track with the soundcloud below. Yes. [...]

Weekend Mixes

Check out that house above - I want to live in it. Shame it's about 7,000 miles away from Bristol. Click here for more pics. Anyway, moving on from modernist houses, here are some mixes for your weekend. Haven't had any hip hop on here for a while, but I was really enjoying this mix earlier in the week. It's by the man with the finest beard in Cardiff, Kaptin of the Chrome Kids and it's a revival of his old brand 'Higher Learning'. [...]

Eddy Temple Morris - One of the good guys...

For those of you who don't recognise this man pictured above, well, you should, because it's Eddy Temple-Morris, and in my eyes, he's a bit of legend in the music world. (By the way, I didn't just decide to blog about him because he has more hair than the last two people - Mark Hill and Andi Durrant - I've written about!) Today Eddy posted a Facebook statement regarding why he won't be able to appear at Bestival this weekend. It makes for a very refreshing read in this day and age, where every press release is carefully [...]

Sample Pack Review - Baker Bros Funk Session

Haven't reviewed a sample pack on here in quite a while, so I thought it was time to detail another one. To be honest, I don't really want to be dissing other people's hard work though, and I like to avoid taking time and effort just to slag off something I don't like, so we can skip to the chase here and say this is going to be a recommendation. So anyway; Funk Session vol. 1 is a Loopmasters pack, and it's 'funk' in the sense of gritty 60's and 70's low-budget funk and soul [...]

Free Airship remix

Airship - Algebra
Week four (of eight)! This week's remix offering is of Airship , another great Manchester-based band, who were involved in ' Manchester : Remixed ' with us in July. 'Algebra' is actually the track that first put me on to the band initially, but it's recently been re-released ahead of their debut album, 'Stuck In The Ocean', which was released this week on Pias, so it seemed like the perfect track to remix for the project. 'Algebra' is written in a 3/4 time signature, and around the 145bpm mark, so similar to last week's remix [...]

Materia - Underfall

In the ongoing quest for labels to stand out in the crowd, Drawn Recordings seem to have some pretty good ideas. As well as releasing music, they seem to be involved with running some nights in Bristol, and also produce and publish a small magazine, which contains loads of artwork (hence 'Drawn', I guess) from up and coming artists. They give it out for free at their nights which is a good look in my opinion - I've just been flicking through the online copy of issue 5 and it's got some superb stuff in it. [...]

Redshape on the Boilerroom

I could listen to Redshape all day long. I don't know what it is about his sound - I kind of fell out of love with techno about 5 years ago, when minimal started getting boring and most of the rest seemed to be a 90's throwback - but there's something about the grit, the simplicity and attitude of his stuff that really clicks. This mix is no exception - it's simple, blunt, effective, totally compelling. For some reason it's not visible on the Boilerroom Soundcloud account, but I'll try embedding [...]

Bass Music Mix 28 - Actraiser

We've been so busy lately it's been hard to arrange new bass music mixes - but I'm glad to say we're back on the case with this fresh mix from Bristol's own Actraiser - and we've got more in the pipeline, so stay tuned. Actraiser has been producing and releasing deeper dubstep and bass music for a while, and his tracks all have a level of attention to detail which is reflected in this rather impressive mix - 50 tracks in 67 minutes, it layers, splices and edits to excellent effect, and [...]

Antoni Maiovvi - Battlestar Transreplica

Antoni Maiovvi - Olympic Torch
I was in a diabolical mood not 15 minutes ago. Fortunately, that has been fully dissolved by a quick listen to Antoni Maiovvi's latest release 'Battlestar Transreplica'. Four tracks that clock in at 40 minutes, including two epics that clock half an hour between them, this is yet more evidence that Maiovvi is concocting his own 1980's future world of electro space rock disco. Watch the video for 'Olympic Torch' below and let true emotion lift your feeble human heart. Then head over to Juno and cop the release. [...]

Reso - Free EP 2

Now if that isn't a blandly descriptive EP title, I don't know what is. Still, what it's describing is free music from our good chum Reso, and very good free music it is too. Reso's showing off his deeper side again with three tracks of wonky, jazzy beats - my highlight has to be 'Main Sequence Star' which takes a woozy downtempo background and slathers his usual trademarks over the top - virtuoso drum programming, cheesy lead lines for days, and a level of complex intensity which would shame Teebee. Anyway - try them out below, [...]

Weekend Mixes

( pic link ) Look at that church. Well good. Even the piano looks space-age. Anyway, have these mixes, now that we've finally got a day of summer to enjoy: One: Fourtet live on the Solid Steel radio show last night. We all know Mr Hebden is the don; this mix is another illustration of why. 60 mins of house and garage beats that lift themselves well above the standard dancefloor fodder, with great polyrhythms, interesting foundsounds, but still enough chunk to get down to. [...]

Mr Woodnote - OPR8 Remixes

More Bristol-based action here with these two remixes of Mr Woodnote by the recently rebranded OPR8 - which are available for free, from his bandcamp page. The first is something of a slowmo electro hiphop stomp, while the other channels flavours of balkan house (possibly hard to avoid when you're remixing a sax player?) Anyway, give them a blast - stream below, or click through to listen to some more OPR8 stuff: Mr Woodnote Remixes by OPR8 [...]

Emery ft Mikee Liks - Wherever You Are (I.D. remix)

Had this one burning a hole in my CD wallet for a while, but I'm glad to say it's out in the shops now. Emery is a Lithuanian producer and DJ, who enlisted the vocals of the UK's Mikee Liks on this latest effort. Which I then chopped up and remixed. Emery's also a shit-hot mastering engineer and has mastered a few of the Bass Music releases - check his website here . So anyway, that's a soundcloud of my remix below, stream it at once, and then purchase it from Juno [...]

Free Santiago Street Machine remix

Breaking Bones by Santiago Street Machine
So, we're into the third week of giving away the eight remixes we completed (in a month) for the ' Manchester : Remixed ' project, that we set ourselves in July. This week's remix is pretty unique to what you'd expect from us, as HeavyFeet. We wanted to play up to the original tempo of the song, so we decided to work at 140pm on this one, instead of bringing it down 10bpm or so, to a more comfortable territory. Retaining as much of the original song as possible, we focused on the band's vocals and [...]

The Kelly Twins - Mother Wolf

The Kelly Twins - Mother Wolf This is worthy of a post all of its own I think. Check out the AMAZING new studio mix from this powerful pair, recorded for online nightlife + listings juggernaught Don't Panic; I wrote the accompanying words so I won't say any more here... out to Chris Cummins on the artwork too, it's an acid Miami nightmare. http://www.dontpaniconline.com /magazine/music/the-kelly-twin s-mother-wolf Permalink | Leave a comment »

Roly Porter - Tleilax

The Subtext revival continues. Roly Porter - formerly of Vex'd fame - is due to launch his new album in about 2 weeks through Subtext, and as part of the promo they're giving away a free track, and getting everyone down to the Arnolfini in Bristol for a showcase gig . Details of the said gig are above; the free track is below. It's probably what you'd call Drone music, and it's extremely well done; electronic distortion creates an unsettling bed of noise through which moments of beauty surface and then submerge once more. [...]

Setspeed - Komu (out now)

The latest release is out now on Bass Music, and it's another Setspeed release; two tracks of deeper beats that step back from the rave, whilst retaining healthy amounts of sub. 'Komu' is a 116bpm electro analogue roller that channels influence from classic 90's Autechre, while 'Detail From A Larger Work' is more like suspended abstract 2-step. They've had cracking reactions and plays out from the likes of 2562, Dark Sky, Passion Pit, Peo De Pitte and plenty more. As usual you can purchase the remix stems to each of the tracks, for the [...]

Weekend Mixes

It's a bank holiday weekend here in the UK. That means it will rain and you'll be stuck indoors all weekend. Sorry. So dull your aching sorrows with this Fact mix from Shlohmo. It's pretty psychedelic I'd say, incorporating slowed down Tears For Fears and a broken tape of Prince's 'Nothing Compares 2 U', (as covered etc) to the extent that the Tom Waits track sounds positively mainstream. Good stuff. Don't try raving to it though. For the tracklist and interview head over to the Fact page. [...]

Free Jessie Rose Trip remix

This week's free remix from our ' Manchester : Remixed ' project is of The Jessie Rose Trip. Unlike last week's remix that we gave away from this project ( Dutch Uncles - 'X-O' ), this is actually quite typical of our current HeavyFeet output, taking a more Chicago house orientated path, perhaps with a little more vocal use than we would typically go for in such a remix, but baring in mind, our aim was for all eight of these remixes to retain as much of the original song as possible, due to [...]
