Welcome to the fourth edition of our podcast feature - “The Random Residency” where we will take an in - depth look at the resident DJ. Resident DJ’s play a big part in the scene as they are an integral part of the set up and many have a vast musical knowledge & background. However they’re not always credited for the job they do as they can be easily out-shadowed by the guest, headline DJ. This time around we have the pleasure of being entertained by one of Manchester's finest, underground techno DJ's, Leon Vowles. Leon is resident at a night called [...]

Our last Random Mix of 2009 see's Roof Light take to the helm as he mixes up 2hrs worth of many different shades of electronic music. Roof Light caught our attention earlier in the year with his brilliant debut release on the Styrax Records label. His In Your Hands EP caused a stir within the electronic community & with a good handful on this very blog. With that said we had very little to think about when it came to inviting Roof Light to contribute a Random Mix. Check out more from Roof Light here; [...]

Our 18th Random Mix sees us take a short trip to Scotland where we catch up with the Scottish techno outfit that is numbercult We formed numbercult as a platform for music production, DJing, generative animation and design; all wrapped around a love of vinyl. We like the idea of using a fluid structure with a collective, bringing together like-minded people in the spirit of collaboration under a single banner. There are two core members of numbercult and we both bring different strengths and experience to the project (I have previously recorded under [...]

Bruce Ivery's ' Rush ' EP on the excellent Stilove4music label was an instant hit for many a music fan this year including a good handful on this very site. With its versatile outlook on house and disco Bruce has created one of the years better EP's. With that said we didn't hesitate in inviting Bruce to be part of our Random Mix series & tell us a little about himself & his music in the process. Here's what Bruce had to say; Stylish, innovative, and creative are just only a few words to describe Bruce Ivery [...]

DELTA FUNKTIONEN - Electromagnetic radiation part II [Ann Aimee] (buy) Delta Funktionen (Niels Luinenburg) returns with his second EP on Delsin sub label Ann Aimee. Electromagnetic radiation part II follows on (surprisingly) from 2008's Electromagnetic radiation part I. I was a big fan of the first EP, it was simple rhythmic techno with warm liquid pads, so I was glad to find more of the same on his new EP. In my opinion it is the first track' Dawn' which really stands out. As with 'Nebula' on part I the production is simple, relying on driving percussion [...]

I've stumbled across 3 excellent mixes this week that are definitely worth a listen; all 3 covering slightly different angles of this thing called house. Theo Parrish – Live at The Do Over, Los Angeles - October 25, 2009 His live mixes are few and far between so if you arent versed in the ways of Theo behind the turntables, this is a great place to start. Expect ceiling-punching-disco->head thrasing acid->esoteric jazz Ame - Studio Mix October 2009 [...]

I hope electronic music never gets boring. For me it started at the beginning of the decade when I was ten or eleven. I had heard records from the Chemical Brothers, the Prodigy, etc. but had no understanding of house and techno at the time. It wasn't until my older brother gave me some compilations that year; then the bug really bit me. The sounds of Tyrant and Richie Hawtin influenced me profoundly. Just learning about DJing and the different aspects of the art form fascinated me. It wasn't long until I [...]

Ibex - "3603 EP [Rush Hour Recordings] (buy) ( buy ) Tony Ollivierra makes more than a welcome return to producing music under his Ibex guise. Known for his two releases on Planet E back in 2000 & 2001, Ollivierra returns in 2009 with a finely tuned house EP that should have something to suite everyone. "3603 is the main attraction here and is available in both vocal and instrumental form - the latter being a dub version. The vocal "3603 is a lovely house jam that has great attention to detail throughout . Tight, organic percussion and soulful [...]

Dreesvn - "Tall Stories" [Acido Records] (buy) Dreesvn's been away for a hot minute but now he's back with this essential five track EP of pure - raw techno music. Basic & stripped back to the bone with rhythmically charged - free flowing percussion & raw 'ass melodies'. If you think Berlin your only half way there as the "Dynamic" one doesn't just blend Berlin flavours with ease, oh no - he also goes back to the early Detroit & Chicago sound & intertwines the whole thing together. Raw as you like & in places obscure & experimental. I really cant praise this enough, be sure to check [...]

James Duncan - "Friday Night Sessions" [Le Systeme Records] (buy) Deep house head - James Duncan returns after a four year hiatus from producing, however after listening to these cool house cuts you wouldn't think that he's been away from the studio for this lengthy amount of time. James brings 'real' deep house back to the table with Friday Night Sessions as he crafts his way through deep house timbres, rolling grooves, up-beat tempos & organic piano sections, all of which are backed up with Duncan's great vocal sampling. "Friday night sessions" is an apt name for this quality EP [...]

Big Strick - 7 Days (FXHE) (buy) After a succession of mix cds on FXHE, Omar-S's cousin comes out of the production wilderness with a strong EP of metallic motorcity house; Black Talk stands out.

Fresh from his self-titled releases that have caused a fair bit of fuss in record shops over the world, we welcome on board English soul tinged, slo-mo producer, Cottam for the 16th Random Mix. Cottam1-Side B by Cottam (buy) After catching the ear of a host of top djs with his Erykah Badu and James Brown sampling, #1 , Cottam (real name Paul) immediately hit us with the follow up, #2 (spot the theme developing here) which took Angie Stone into [...]

Demdike Stare - Demdike stare part 1 (buy) I'm not really sure if there is much point reviewing this record because the chances are you might not be able to find it. There are only 300 copies worldwide I'm afraid, and it looks like they have sold out, but it is definitely worth hunting down, you might find one here if you are lucky. Where to begin. This is quite a difficult record to get your head around. Demdike Stare is a collaboration between Miles Whittaker & [...]
