Playing ribfest sounds like a punchline, for sure. But in recent years the organizers of Chicago's Ribfest in North Center have booked some decent musical acts. This year's lineup includes some locals, including Waco Brothers, My Gold Mask and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons . There are also sets by garage rockers The Ettes , rockabilly vets the Legendary Shack Shakers , country rocker Hayes Carll and the Twin Cities' Tapes 'n Tapes . All in all, it's a good lineup ... especially for a ribfest. [...]
Lollapalooza rolled out its schedule today. We already knew who was playing . Now we know when they're playing. For 90 bucks a day, I'd like to see a robust lineup that I can get excited about from noon till close. Personally, I only see one day that lives up to my expectations for a full-day, engaging lineup: Friday. As for the top-billing acts, Coldplay, Muse and Girl Talk all headline Friday night. Saturday night's headliners: Eminem, My Morning Jacket and Beirut (on the small Grove stage). Sunday features a two-hour [...]
It's another two weeks before Woods releases its new album, Sun and Shade , but you can listen to a stream here . Woods also plays Pitchfork next month. Here's a recent live version of one of the new songs:
OK, yes, I post a fair amount about Yuck . But how can I resist? Here's a clip from a performance on Jools Holland . Get Away - Yuck
Ty Segall released a new song, You Make the Sun Fry , a slow number (especially by his standards) that will appear on the upcoming Goodbye Bread release next month. You Make The Sun Fry - Ty Segall Here's Ty playing Goodbye Bread : And here he is covering Red Kross :
The opening show of this year's Downtown Sound series at Millennium Park tonight starts off with an intriguing double bill: Bonnie Prince Billy and Eleventh Dream Day . Here's a quirky Bonnie Prince Billy video (redundant?) from a few years ago. He'll be accompanied by the Cairo Gang. Chicago's Eleventh Dream Day is promoting a new album, Riot Now! The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free. Here's a video from [...]

Toro Y Moi will kick off a U.S. tour, following the previously announced Pitchfork appearance July 17, to promote the excellent release Underneath the Pine . Chaz Bundick and company will play San Francisco in August, and the tour wraps up in Atalanta in October. And if you haven't already, check out this new mixtape by clicking here . New Beat - Toro Y Moi The tour schedule is available after the jump. [...]
Tis the season for new videos. No Age just released Common Heat , a song off last year's excellent Everything In Between . Thurston Moore released a video for Benediction , a song off his upcoming album Demolished Thoughts . Common Heat - No Age Benediction - Thurston Moore
Yuck will release a 7-inch single for Shook Down June 27. The record's flip side will feature a previously unreleased song called Milkshake . You can listen to Milkshake here . I've given the song a couple of listens and can recommend it. I missed these guys when they opened for Tame Impala last week but I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the band at Pitchfork .
Sonny & the Sunsets just debuted this video for Reflections on Youth . The song is off the recently released Hit After Hit . Give it a spin. I Wanna Do It - Sonny & the Sunsets
Check out this new video for the Cave Singers' song, Black Leaf . Black Leaf - The Cave Singers
I have to admit that I'm not jazzed by Lollapalooza's headliners, Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse . As usual, there are bright spots but it's hard to plan your Lolla outing until the schedules are up. I think mashup king Girl Talk is a fun edition this year. Among the other ATYP-approved bands playing this year's big tilt: Titus Andronicus, Death from Above, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, the Joy Formidable, Wye Oak, Smith Westerns, Delta Spirit, the Kills, Portugal. The Man, Local Natives, Tennis, Best Coast, Disappears, [...]
Have a listen to this remix for Weekend's Coma Summer . It's the B-side for a 7-inch release of the single, End Times , out next month. Weekend's album Sports , released in November, will appeal to fans of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and A Place to Bury Strangers . The Coma Summer remix gets the Krautrock treatment (think of the beginning of Wilco's Spiders (Kidsmoke). Coma Summer (Speculator's Subconscious remix) - Weekend
Fifty bucks for a Jeff Tweedy show? It's for charity. Tweedy plays two nights at the Vic Friday and Saturday. Whatever you do, don't talk during his set.
Check out this new video for Wild Beasts' song Albatross . The band's new album, Smother , is set for release next month.
Who says folk singers can't rock? At least a little? The Cave Singers are touring the compelling new album, No Witch (not a rock album but it has its moments). Catch the band tonight at Lincoln Hall. Lia Ices opens. Black Leaf - The Cave Singers
Che Smith, aka Rhymefest , forced a runoff election with veteran Chicago pol Willie Cochran in an aldermanic race. But it looks like the rapper and Kanye collaborator fell short Tuesday in his bid to upset Cochran for a seat on the city council.
How cool is this show? J. Mascis plays Subterranean with Kurt Vile opening. Unfortunately, the show is sold out. Mascis is touring a mostly acoustic album, Several Shades of Why , while Vile is promoting his newest, Smoke Ring for My Halo . In My Time - Kurt Vile
I already highlighted the Pains of Being Pure at Heart for releasing one of the best albums this week. I should also note that garage rockers Obits came out with Moody, Standard and Poor . If your tastes fall more toward the pop side, try Generationals' Actor-Caster . Both albums are recommended. Shift Operator - Obits Ten-Twenty-Ten - Generationals
