Almost a year later, Cults release a video for "You Know What I Mean." The dare devil theme video has a slow and solemn quality to it that is oddly fitting. Listening to the track, I'm reminded of the hoopla surrounding this album that was surprisingly omitted from many end of the year lists. Why was that? Also, isn't Cults the original Lana Del Ray blurred-crossover-controversy? Everyone upheld them as this DIY band bursting onto the scene with their EP, only later to learn they were groomed by a major, and precedingly dropped by the indie buzz scene [...]
I have a crush. Well I have two crushes to the chagrin of my girlfriend. One is on Annie Clarke . Yes, I know. Who doesn't? Sorry Annie. So you know, you're music comes first to me and then your beauty. I swear that's not a line. Sorry girlfriend. Now, my second crush is on Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear. Well hell, Grizzly Bear and the whole group do just fine by me. Everyone who gushes over Wilco, Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel or the equivocal-Grizzly Bear is my musical utopia. And for shits and giggles, just to clarify, my love [...]
Just let the cawing violin repeat. Let it repeat. "Red, and yellow, green, These things are blurring / Red, and yellow, green, These things are blurring / You say we're all snow / You say we're all snow / You say we're all snow" "Life is gone, life is gone, life is gone..life is gone..." Isn't it captivating? We've made no secret of it, Labyrinth Ear is one of our favorite premiering groups. I'm still in love with their remix of Arthur Russel "Walk on The Moon. " Hell, we even [...]
St. Vincent released earlier this month her video for "Cheerleader" off her recent album, Stranger Mercy . Exhibited in the center of a gallery, the video cuts straights to the point: Annie Clarke does not want to appear larger than life, held up for the looking gaze. Whether this is a personal reflection or not, her most recent album cover might suggest her efforts to change her public persona (with it's bizarre twist showing the silouhette of a mouth); which dramatically shifts from the glamorous, though intended to be bizarre (based on our interview with St. [...]

San Francisco natives "Weekend" took their lo-fi, noise pop sound to The New Parrish in Oakland last Wednesday night. The group shared the stage with fellow local Luis Vasquez; founder of the up and coming post-punk project, "Soft Moon." Weekend chose to only shine two lonely lights upon the stage that evening, resulting in a stark, almost noir like setting. Their simple, yet confounded sound echoed throughout the venue with their effective blend of dark and melodic songwriting. The photos in this piece are a reflection of this. Their newest release Sports , which received [...]

"FUCK LA! This place sucks." I concur. I havent been much of a Busdriver fan in the past but I am a loyal Aesop Rock fan and I can solidly say that is the reason why this track is good. Superhand Mantra that is. In anticipation for the release of Beaus$Eros, his seventh full-length album, Busdriver has released both Superhand Mantra and Bon Bon Fire as Mp3 downloads and Kiss Me Back to Life as a video. Bon Bon Fire is aimlessly stupid and the video for Kiss Me Back to Life leans too heavily on [...]

Elephant & Castle is the solo-project of David Vincent Reep. "Sweet Someone" and "I Will" are the first two singles off of Reep's debut LP, Transitions , which was produced by Bay Area Low End king, Daddy Kev and features vocals from Merril Garbus, aka, tUnE-yArDs . The first three singles have ambient and euphoric undertones that are calming and explorative. "I Will" is filled with warm synths pulsating with a repeating chant that sound an Active Child sample, cut, and repeated. Where "En Memoria" is orchestra of bells, distant voices, flutes, and Garbus softly singing [...]

Deleted Scenes dropped by the Rickshaw Stop, sharing the stage with A Lull and Ravenna Wood. Although the woeful 49ers loss may have kept a few extra people from braving the fifth stormy night in as many days, the group played a motivated and energetic set, much to the pleasure of the attending patrons. Fresh off of their September 2011 release, Young People's Church of the Air , the group focused on many of their more recent songs, while mixing in hits from 20092s Birdseed Shirt . A Lull capped the night off with their fresh take [...]
Badu shines over an amazing ensemble that includes Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Members of The Dap Kings. The track was written by Mark Ronson for Re-Generation, a marketing campaign by Hyundai which has also worked with DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, The Crystal Method, Skrillex, and remixes Bonobo . The entire film series has been compiled into a documentary, which is showing in select cities across the US. For us Bay Area folk, the film is playing at the Metreon on February 16th. Enjoy the track. Download Mp3 - Mark [...]
![Gary Bartz Experiment ft. Aloe Blacc and Bilal [Live Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4024821_lg.jpg)
Does folk derive from blues? Is hip hop rooted in jazz? They say blues is an off shoot of jazz, and jazz draws from classical music, so is blues a form of classical? No matter how you look at it there's something special about hearing the different music worlds come together. This last Wednesday, we got to do just that when legendary jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz performed with soul and hip hop singers Bilal and Aloe Blacc at Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco for The Red Bull Music Academy showcase produced by Jill Newman. The [...]
![Elzhi – The Elmatic Story [Interview]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4024737_lg.jpg)
People have doubted Elzhi since he started rapping. His family wanted him to get a "stable" job. After eight years as a member of Slum Village, rapper T3, the group leader, left Elzhi out of the group's music video for "Reunion 2." When he decided to go solo, his label said he wouldn't make it. For years, Elzhi discussed remaking Nas' album Illmatic , and calling it Elmatic . Naysayers said it would never come. They questioned how he could improve on such a classic album. Then last May the album was released. It was a huge success. [...]
Who said gangsta rap was dead? Introducing School Boy Q. The LA rapper off Top Dawg Entertainment is also a member of the Black Hippy group featuring Jay Rock , Kendrick Lamar, and Ab-Soul. His latest album, Habits & Contradictions , was released earlier this month. What you got to say about "Hands On The Wheel?" Uh uh fuck that...what? Recognize that sample? It comes from Lissie's cover of Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness." Download Mp3 Schoolboy Q ft. A$AP Rocky: "Hand On The Wheel"

Photograph by Victoria Smith A lot has changed in the four years since the release of Geographer's debut album, Innocent Ghosts . To start, the band was praised by Spin, highly reviewed for their EP Animal Shapes, sold-out The Independent for Noise Pop Festival, and named by Live 105 as one the "Bay Area's Top 20 Bands in 2011." More importantly, the personal tragedies that fed lead singer Michael Deni with cathartic inspiration are now just a memory. On Myths , Deni's focus shifts to the societal myths we uphold as truth, as he searches for his own [...]

I can't ever tell if Die Antword is "for real," or they meant to make you feel like you stumbled upon some bizarre-kinkfest cattle-prod porno that makes you linger guiltily on the "stop" button. Well you like it, just admit it. While Ten$sions is not yet out, the single "I Fink U Freaky," is circulating the web. At first listen it is just a crappy club purge, but then comes the fucked-up accent that we are told is South African but is more reminiscent of that dead girl who lived (?) at the bottom of the [...]

Gary Bartz is a Grammy Award winning alto saxophonist that has been playing for years. To see him, accompanied by two of the most talented contemporary male soul singers isn't a treat-it's special. Introducing Aloe Blacc to any of my readers might be futile, but for those that haven't heard the growingly popular soul singer's hit "I Need A Dollar"-you need to get on that. Blacc has found success in the same spotlight as Mayer Hawthorne and Sharon Jones. Bilal's more psychedelic soul and funk should provide an interesting compliment to Blacc, with a style more comparable to Erykah [...]

Santigold, aka Santi White, released last night the video for her new single "Big Mouth" off her sophmore album, Master of My Make-Believe. Ever since her debut, L.E.S. Articles , we've been huge followers. The Afro-beat of "Big Mouth" draws further comparison to M.I.A., but (in our opinion) Santi is in a league of her own. Even the video is reminiscent of M.I.A. "Boyz" (or Major Lazer). The album will include appearances from Major Lazer's Switch, TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner, and songwriter/producer Greg Kurstin. [...]

by Angela Bacca Unfortunately,I spent the bulk of my time over the holidays secretly indulging in gluttonous amounts of TV watching. I procrastinated all the real work I'm now scrambling to get done for the sake of Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Real Housewives of Atlanta. I watched all 4 Netflix seasons of Breaking Bad and then, when I just had to know if Walter White was really actually going to die I was able to skip straight to the season airing now. Then I watched every episode in existence [...]

Theophilus London, the fast rapping indie styled artist who just recently opened for Erykah Badu in SF, released "Last Night" today. The track is the first preview off his new album Lover Holiday II: Rose Island . The beat is originally off Rustie's "After Light ," which is dope in itself. Another track with A$AP Rocky is supposedly on its way. Last Night (LVRS ANTHEM) by Theophilus London (LVRS)
