It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Despite a weather forecast that called for nothing but sun all weekend as recently as Sunday morning, we found ourselves among the spitting rain as the final day of Movement began. While it ebbed and flowed throughout the day, the rain was more or less non-stop through it all. While some festival goers were a bit apprehensive at first, hiding under awnings and overcrowding the covered Underground stage, by mid-afternoon, most people decided to just let it ride. The final day was a good one, [...]
Day 2 of a 3 day music festival is like the Jan Brady of the weekend. You don't quite have the excitement of the first day or the last day, but it still ends up being pretty great in the end. My day 2 got off to a bit of a late start due to a car that was going to explode without an oil change, and a trip to the camera shop to take care of my day 1 camera mishaps, but I did make it there just in time to catch Adult. which was my main goal anyway.read [...]

It's the happiest time of the year once again. The Detroit Movement Electronic Music Festival (better known colloquially as DEMF) is upon us once again to officially kick off summer. And just as we have the past few years, we're bringing you all (er....some) of the action in picture form. Thanks to our clumsy photographer (read:me) and an unzipped camera bag, we almost lost our gear to a several foot fall. Luckily we made it out with just a cracked lens filter and a minor heart attack, and our trip to the camera shop for a new filter [...]
![[Mixtape] A Blogwave Summer: Volume Four](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4959258_lg.jpg)
Even though we sorta don't blog these days, there are still a few things we love to do which is why we keep this site around. One of those things is our series of live music picture posts (next edition coming soon!), and another is our annual blog-curated Blogwave Summer mixtape, which we like to think officially kicks off summer. This is our FOURTH edition, in celebration of what would have been our fourth anniversary had we not sorta quit the game, and it's really hard to believe this has been going on for so long. This mixtape [...]

April, you cruel temptress. In last month's digest, I complained about March's unseasonably cool weather, but looked forward to the bright future that April promised, only to be crushed once again with temperatures reaching freezing, and actual snow flakes falling from the sky on the luckiest 13th day of April, following a week of nonstop rain, wind, clouds and complete and other gray, followed by more actual snowflakes on April 20 and 24. [Update: Its now May 2 and it's been glorious for a week.] For a winter that also started unseasonably early this year, it's safe to say that [...]

Even though it's technically April 2, it still feels like early February in what continues to be the longest winter on record. Can someone please file a frivolous lawsuit against that liar of a groundhog? To further add salt to the wounds of this never ending winter, I've recently sunburned the scheisse out of my face and my forehead is currently in the process of molting in the grossest way imagineable. But I guess it's a great pre-summer reminder not to make such an avoidable mistake again when it really matters. And how did I get a [...]
It's February! Which means it's almost March. Which means it's almost the official end of winter. Which means it's almost the official start of Spring. Which means SXSW is really soon. Which means I get to hang out with all of my internet friends really soon at SXSW. Which means I will actually be warm for the first time since October in 2 weeks in Austin. Which means I'll probably be sick in 3 weeks. But by then it will almost be April, and life will not be so gray and cold pretty soon. In the meantime, here are some [...]

Welcome to another edition of me posting once a month, because it's just better for everyone this way. This month's theme is songs recommended via Twitter (maybe I've used this one already?). When I'm at work, I read the twitter throughout the day and when people I know with fantastic musical tastes post links to songs, I usually favorite them to listen to later and then forget to do that. Until today. All of the songs posted below have been discovered via Twitter recommendations, complete with the actual tweet thanks to the fancy embed functionality of Twitter.com, because I'm probably [...]

Here it is, folks. Our first photos of 2013. In fact, our first photos since mid-October. We'll blame it on the holidays and the general lack of energy that overtakes life once the weather takes a turn for the worse, in addition to that November/December show slump. We couldn't be happier to kick off the year with the ever lovely Ellie Goulding, who we've been lucky to photograph once before. I was bummed to miss openers St. Lucia after recommendations from some well-trusted musical resources, especially after I caught their last song and really liked what I [...]

Hey kids - did you miss me? A lot has happened since we last spoke. I went to Chicago to see/swoon over Tame Impala, the Game of Thrones prophecy that winter is coming has turned into winter is here (along with the painfully short days and wretched dry skin that accompanies it), I essentially stole some more awesome furniture and housewares from craigslist, I took part in a friends up north (west, actually) weekend to make up for the lack of such a summer trip, saw Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs at the mother effin Shelter right here in Detroit, and [...]

In an effort to divert my attention from all of the pre-election speculation that has been consuming my life over the past week (because I'm completely mortified about what might happen tomorrow evening, I thought this might be a good opportunity to squeeze in another one of those "once a month" big posts I mentioned and have done exactly 1 time thus far. Let's start by talking about CMJ. I've made it very clear that my goals at CMJ are to hang out with my internet friends who I only see twice a year at best, and [...]

If there's one thing I love to do on a Tuesday night, it's to see Crystal Castles perform just a few miles from my house. When HEALTH is the opener, things get even more interesting. Having a torrid remix history with each other, the two bands took to the stage at the Royal Oak Music Theatre last night for an affair to be remembered. After a photo pass dispute (where I spent 2 of the first 3 HEALTH songs convincing the security guy that it was possible for there to be 2 opening bands at a show), I took a [...]

What's up bros? Last night, the wonderful tour bus commune lovefest that is Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros rolled into my neighboring city of Royal Oak for their first trip to the area since that killer show at The Crofoot a few years back. I definitely didn't give their latest album as many listens as their debut which was one of my faves that year, but that didn't mean I wasn't stoked to see them live again so close to home, though at a much bigger venue than last time. It definitely didn't hurt that Clap [...]

Remember that time when I was like, "I don't really want to blog anymore, but maybe I'll just do a big giant post once a month or something," and nobody, including myself, thought I ever would? Well, it's happening, right now. Think of this as a mini digest of some posts I might have done individually had I still felt the spirit. We have a lot to talk about. First off, Beat Culture, a veritable dailybeatz regular this year, has finished his debut LP Forgive and is trying to release it on vinyl, because vinyl is [...]

This post should be subtitled, "Or, how I've become completely out of touch with the music world." Surely you've noticed that I haven't been showing my face much around here lately. This is due to some combination of apathy, home ownership, work and general summer merriment. I've completely abandoned my inbox and only scan it for any personal messages I might have gotten and I find myself missing blogging less and less but am still keeping this thing around for whenever the spirit moves me. I'm currently de-mp3ing the first several years of this site because I don't really care [...]

It's been quite some time since I put together one of these posts, but since I post MAYBE once every other week these days, due to some combination of home ownership, enjoying summer, and a generally blah attitude toward it, I figured a mini-mega post featuring everyone's favorite internet music blog discovery game might make up for some of it. That's right, we're back with a brand new edition of Hype Machine Hunting (formerly known as Hypem Hunting), where I pick a random word, search for it on Hype Machine , and find a bunch of cool songs that [...]

One of the upcoming releases on the unbelievably consistent Cascine label is the self titled EP from Erika Spring, who you may know better as Erika Forster, who you may know better as one of those girls in Au Revoir Simone. I think the main one. Was there a main one? I guess we'll never know for sure. The EP is pretty great on it's own, especially on these nearly unbearably hot summer days. I will never call a day unbearably hot. Because summer is what this music was made for, and as long as I have a pool or [...]
