Song of the Moment: Yo La Tengo

Song of the Moment: Yo La Tengo The new Yo La Tengo track "Here To Fall" floated across my radar this morning thanks to the ever resourceful Large Hearted Boy . It's fabulous and spacey, like listening to an orchestra jam with a jazz band on some outer rim planetary dive bar. It also makes me sort of regret never paying attention to Yo La Tengo before. MP3: Yo La Tengo - Here To Fall ( zshare )( YSI ) "Here To Fall" will be on " Popular Songs ," out September 8.

Album Review: Kevin Hearn

Album Review: Kevin Hearn Havana Winter By Kevin Hearn Kevin Hearn, taking a break from his day job with Barenaked Ladies , has returned with his band Thin Buckle and a fifth solo album, "Havana Winter." First off, it is a beautiful album. Opener "Coma" is a good representation of what the songs are about: the writing is excellent, the instrumentation enticing, the lyrics a bit simplistic, the overall mood optimistic in its own reality. Oh, and Lou Reed on guitar. Hearn is an adventuresome composer, utilizing a [...]

Magazine Review: Entertainment Weekly, July 31, 2009

Magazine Review: Entertainment Weekly, July 31, 2009 Growing up I devoured every issue of Entertainment Weekly. Now I'll only read it if I can cash in airline miles to pay for it. Why? Well, let's review ... Entertainment Weekly #1058 -July 31, 2009 The cover - "Why I Left Grey's Anatomy." This show is winding down and I still haven't seen a single episode. There's also blurbs for a Paula Abdul poll ("Would you miss her?" Well, seeing as how I never watch [...]

Movie Review: Blade Runner

Movie Review: Blade Runner The other night, at the behest of my good friend Sean , I finally got around to watching Blade Runner . Up front: I'm not a Sci-Fi guy. I'm not even SyFy. I don't do Trek, Firefly, Doctor Who, X-Files - I do original trilogy Star Wars and that's it. But Sean, knowing my weakness, sold it thusly: "It's noir!" And, as we previously established , I'm a noir type of guy. There are approximately 23 different versions of the film available. I watched the original U.S. theatrical release. For those [...]

Album Review: Aimee Allen

Album Review: Aimee Allen A Little Happiness By Aimee Allen Her first album was ground under the wheels of corporate machinery, lost in a label merger. A random gang attack left her beaten near death. The post traumatic stress made her recoil from her trademark raucous anthems. Aimee Allen was at a creative crossroads. Can she put aside the rage and snarl in favor of a quieter, more introspective album? Can the girl who energized a stadium full of Ron Paul supporters over weighty issues of [...]

Book Review: I Should Have Stayed Home

Book Review: I Should Have Stayed Home I love noir for many reasons. One: I'm fascinated by the genre's bleak outlook and low opinion of human behavior. I don't always share this view, but I respect its attachment to reality (and, let's face it, real life sometimes unfolds exactly how noir predicts it will). Two: the cover art. Oh the beautiful, beautiful cover art. I could fill a blog on Robert McGinnis alone (see why here , courtesy of Leif Peng and his fabulous blog Today's Inspiration ). So when I heard word you could download pulp novels for free at Munseys , [...]
