Yep Roc has started pre-orders for the new Grant-Lee Phillips album "Little Moon" with a nice little contest to win various goodies, from an autographed guitar to vintage tour t-shirts. Of more value to me, since I rarely win contests, is each preorder comes with a bonus disc of five demo versions of songs from the album. The bonus disc is only available from Yep Roc. You can stream the new album below. It's simple and solid songwriting, always worth a listen. My recommended tracks are "Good Morning Happiness" and "Buried Treasure."

I wish every person in the world was like Aimee Allen . She's rambunctious, engaging, friendly, authentic, and generally all-around awesome. After releasing one of my favorite albums so far this year, she hit the road with Sugar Ray and Fastball. A week ago Sunday she played St. Pete, braved the horrendous humidity, and laid down a solid half hour of dancing, singing, and good times, all without stopping moving once. We managed to slow her down for a few minutes after her set to chat about weather appropriate clothing, turning off the TV, [...]

[ via ] Sundays are made for keeping it low key. Cue up the songs, crash on the couch, and try to make each hour before Monday morning be as unproductive as possible. MP3: Hope Sandoval - Blanchard MP3: Zaza - Sooner or Later

It's almost the weekend and I really can't think of a better way to start than this choice Tigercity track. It's like cursing yourself for going to the most crowded club in town then turning around and finding yourself face to face with the most beautiful girl in the room. MP3: Tigercity - Fake Gold Fake Gold will be on Ancient Lover , release date forthcoming.

All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl. - Jean-Luc Godard Sometimes all you need for a post is a cool picture and a good song. [ via ] MP3: Orenda Fink - Bloodline

Yesterday I horned in on an interesting discussion between Lee* and Eric regarding the neverending rush of new music us bloggers receive and our neverending desire to revisit older albums we love. There's no wrong answer to this really - it's a beautiful problem to have. I tend to prefer the constant influx of the new, equating myself with a shark that has to keep moving or die. So I cruise along, devouring any music that happens to swim through my little patch of sea. There's a drawback of course: [...]

Knox Road's Lee drew my attention today to Exit Clov 's online pledge drive to raise money for victims of Taiwan's Typhoon Morakot . Money is tight with everyone these days, certainly around my place as well, but I'm digging deep to donate a few bucks to the cause. Consider it a deposit in your karma bank. Susan and i made a little lo-fi, home music video tonight to help raise money for the victims of Taiwan's Typhoon Morakot. It's a performance of a Taiwanese song called "Ai-Biahnh Jia-eh Eianh." [...]

This Red Wire Black Wire track reminds me of first hearing Friendly Fires . At first I thought "oh, this album is nice but it'll be rotated out of the playlist quickly." Then I kept listening to it. And listened to it more. By the time all was said and done, it was one of my favorite albums of the year. So will Red Wire Black Wire do that for me in 2009? Don't know, but Breathing Fire is a good start. It's like sneaking over the fence at [...]

[ via ] Psychologists say you should limit yourself to one or, at most, two "traumatic" events at a single time. These include the classics (divorce, moving, and death) along with more modern variants (usually centered around the increasing demands and disappearing boundaries between our work and non-work lives). Currently I'm undergoing four, possibly five if you count the general confusion I have in what my exact aims for FRS are in regards to content, posting schedule, and, well, pretty much everything. Time is tight and stress is high, a volatile combination even [...]

[ via ] Music News Hypebot reports the latest study results on teen's relationship with music and piracy, this time from the UK. Ben Hewitt has a chat with FRS hero Peter Hook . "That was the wonderful thing about Joy Division. From its inception to its demise, we never earned a single penny. We started it broke and finished it broke. There were no arguments about publishing, no arguments about money. It was very straightforward. It [...]

I'm fascinated by this Neon Indian track. As fresh and lovely as getting your first kiss in line at Disney World's Space Mountain. MP3: Neon Indian - Should Have Taken Acid With You Get this track and more on the free Lefse Records sampler . Hat tip to GorillavsBear for the spot.

I've been listening to a lot of Radio Margaritaville lately and growing fond of bands who take a very simple approach to songwriting and production techniques. The Bottle Rockets fall in this group. Actually, they excel in this group. I mean look at this band photo - these are clearly guys who have no time for all this ironic-hipster-nonsense when there's music to be played. MP3: The Bottle Rockets - Hard Times MP3: The Bottle Rockets - Get On The Bus [...]

How fabulous is this Anna Ternheim song? It's like a seduction scene in an Egyptian cabaret between an international spy and a deadly femme fatale. MP3: Anna Ternheim - What Have I Done "What Have I Done" is off Leaving On A Mayday , available now at Amazon .

Remind Me In 3 Days ... By The Knux The Knux are what hip hop is supposed to sound like: literate, authentic, inventive, pushing a genre chasing yesterday's hit back to being forward thinking. It's audible adrenaline, made to be performed live on stage rather than endlessly overdubbed in a sterile studio. The tracks seem to push against the physical limits of the medium they're on, as if their sheer massiveness is so tightly compacted there's a very real danger of them exploding free and blowing your stereo apart.
