Chicago's Republic of Lights offer their debut, "Go Rococo", for your listening pleasure. It's not all that new, but it was "new " to us, it's free and we like it. The band walks a tight line between edgie indie rock and upbeat pop. The tracks "Go Rococo", "Got You Surrounded", and "22 Cent Stamp" recall Spoon, while "Lotus" and "Strange Climate" favor dance rock. Keep up with Republic of Lights on Facebook and catch them live in Chicago. Check out: " Got [...]

Buckets o' new stuff on SoundCloud from Averkiou, Grinderman, Manor, Averkiou - "Fuzzy Photograph" from The New Imperative (EP) out 2/10 on Sound Study Fuzzy guitars? Reverb-drenched vocals? Should I be stumbling out of a bar following my afternoon classes? This Gainesville (FL) quartet takes us back to those halcyon days of old (or at least my early college days), as they serve up a grunge-tinged dose of shoegazing that recalls My [...]

This week's new features tracks from Dada Trash Collage, Freshkills, Lux, Oy Vey, Sourpatch, White Rabbits, and a single from the upcoming album of unreleased Woody Guthrie songs, New Multitudes . Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker & Yim Yames : "Old LA" from New Multitudes: A Tribute to Woody Guthrie out 2/28 on Rounder Another batch on unrecorded Woody Guthrie tracks get recorded by a great group of performers. [...]

These youngsters from Perth have really stepped up on this release. "Awkward" is fun, dance-pop track full of boy-girl sexual tension and bright guitars. Drummer Scarlett Stevens makes her debut on vocals and it's a winner, yet distinct departure from their last hit, "Golden Revolver", which was a hazy, party pop tune we featured a year ago . The second preview from the Awkward EP , "Rocket Ship" , is the next hazy, party pop tune. Pretty good stuff from a band that was toiling away [...]

Check out these tracks available through the Cloud: The Coathangers - "Smother" from The Coathangers/Davila 666 split out now The Atlanta-based punk quartet release a grinding, catchy track with a stripped down crunchy guitars and KEYS... when's the last time you heard keys in a punk song? Minnie Coathanger, Crook Kid Coathanger, BeBe Coathanger, and Rusty Coathanger would make perfect dates for the Ramones boys. Lots of fun, AND a free download link on [...]

"Meccano" is the first release from The Fades latest, Ragnorak . It's a strong release that plays like Combat Rock-era Clash with Lars Ulrich on the drums. Needless to say it's very high on the repeat play factor. Look for the new release on April 1 on Genepool Records . Check out: "Meccano" - Watch: "Meccano" - [...]

We Can't Enjoy Ourselves don't produce the typical New York jangle pop – their brand is saucy & reckless, like a combination of The Smiths and Pavement (whose song 'We Dance' perhaps their name references). Their bio states: " There once was a band in New York called We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . They were young, energetic, and happy; one day they abandoned their matronly motown shuffle for the sake of a younger genre; they loved, but they were not loved. Their lives ended in disaster. " The 7-song EP One [...]

The Louisville-based quintet cleverly mixes a blend of southern blues, folk and rock to [...]

One can't help dancing to The Other Tribe 's "Don't Need A Melody". It's full of tribal rhythms, punchy bass, clever synth lines, and a groove that's guaranteed to get you moving. The six piece outfit specializes in live dance performances and is based in Bristol (UK). They just won Best Live Act of 2011 in the Best of Bristol Awards. Even more good news, The Other Tribe have just signed to the indie label, Black Butter . In addition to "Don't Need A Melody" look for the single "Skirts" soon. [...]

Callers & Delicate Steve team together to record "Further Out". It's a great pairing. The hybrid African rhythm, blues guitar jam is infectious-like riding down the rails after eating a dozen chocolate covered espresso beans. Pre-order the limited 73 vinyl here . Check out: " Further Out " - Cheers...

Dwelling at the intersection of low fidelity pop and burned-out pyschedlia we find Englishman Luke Donovan's Spectral Park . Seemingly inspired by the acid doo wop of the Mothers of Invention , the organ of Rick Wright ( Pink Floyd ), and the madcap of Syd Barrett, Spectral Park channels a weirdo art-pop groove that is absolutely sublime. The lead track 'L'Appel du Vide' – literally the "call of the void" – buffets between obtuse, jangled guitar chords, phasing electronic noise arpeggios , and sci-fi organ runs, propelled by copious snare drum and topped with reverb-soaked [...]

In re-imagining Steely Dan 's 1977 classic album Aja , Toronto art rockers The Darcys breathe new life into songs I've heard perhaps 500 times. The Darcys render these songs not grooveless, but grounded in a mostly minimalist, modern electronic landscape. They typically maintain vocal melodies but update the music by removing the pristine jazz-influenced approach of the original work and replacing it with bleak and angular electronics, regimented guitar, and metronomic percussion. That's not to say the vocals sound similar to the original, though; voices are frail and subdued, standing in stark contrast [...]

Montage Populaire – 'Reject Reinstall' Experimental glam pop from UK. These fellas are new on the block, yet act like they own it - convincingly. This song is boisterous, melodic, and inventive with a jovial, harmonious chorus, noisy breaks that channel the art rock of Roxy Music , and playful synth sounds that are reminiscent of Olivia Tremor Control or of Montreal . 'Reject Reinstall' is the lead track from their debut EP Not All Bombs Explode. Can't wait for this one... [...]

Cloud Nothings – No Future/No Past [mp3] Cloud Nothings – Stay Useless [mp3] Cloud Nothings – No Sentiment [mp3] (each track from Attack on Memory , out now on Carpark Records ) Dylan Baldi continues to make melodic pop-punk, but embraces the sound and urgency of hardcore & emo ( [...]

Mahoney & The Moment are Steve Mahoney and Emily Moment. The NYC-based duo has wicked chemistry, and belt out folk-based pop tunes that grab you immediately. Fun, fresh tracks that go beyond just being a "boy-girl" duo. They released their self-titled debut album in September, and you can get free downloads for the tracks "Road Trip" and "The Next Love" from their Bandcamp site. We're streaming those tracks plus "If You Only Asked Me To", below. Give a listen, it may just brighten up what's left of your Monday-it did for me! [...]

In this edition: Discover The Last Names and Young Fathers, consider the music blog Indie Ambassador, and this week's videos! Discover: The Last Names The Last Names are probably familiar to you. As 2/5 of Bishop Allen , Justin Rice and Darbie Nowatka enjoy music that builds off the classic sounds of early 60s pop radio, making catchy pop tunes with upbeat compositions. It appears the duo are on break from Bishop Allen, moving from their hip [...]

Singles on SoundCloud from new releases featuring: Anchorless, Autoband, Leisure, Like Spinning, Miike Snow, Matt Pryor, and School of Seven Bells. Anchorless - "Settle with the Signs" from Every Nook And Cranny out February 6 on Pony Records "Settle with the Signs" is full of jangly arpeggios and bouncy beats reminiscent of early REM. The Danish sextet will satisfy those longing for the days of 80s college [...]

As the first track on And Now We Are Talking , 'Going Steady' establishes itself with a thin melody built on a chorus of echoing monotonous utterances; introduce a banging drum loop, punchy bass, & dreary gothic vocals of Ryan Hizer and you have the lazy/hazy electronic experiments of Good Sport . 'Bad Harmonies' features a moaning mellotron with waves of modulating static; 'Dudes' has a Matthew Dear feel, and 'Pushover' has the inspirational vibe of a John Hughes 80s teenybopper movie theme song. The excellent 5-song EP And Now We Are Talking is [...]

Mr. Fogg – 'Stay Out Of the Sun' For his sophomore album, Oxford (UK)'s Mr. Fogg employed a new method – targeting the composition of 20 new songs in 5 months. The first output from that process is the first single – 'Stay Out Of the Sun', which opens with whispered vocals, simple piano chords, and metronomic beats and alternates between that basic structure and waves of phasing synthesizer, hazy guitar and clattering percussion. Young Hines – 'Rainy Day' Brendan Benson ( [...]
