With an obvious band name like Spaceships , this LA duo/trio naturally focuses on writing songs about "life, mountains, and also other things like death and working". The DIY vibe is strong with this band, and the raw rockiness is accentuated by the lovely, psychedelic howling of Jessie Waite. Audioley is a new music project from Francois Peglau and Jules Drade who are both based out London. The playful electronic sound is a break for each musician. In the past, we've featured and are unabashed fans of Peglau's lo-fi power pop/jangle pop stylings. While Drade has ventured between singer/songwriter and modern rock music . The pair have released a first single "Same Old" with video. The video is a sort of an homage to Argentinean sex exploitation films. It's actually pretty [...]

This is a "get it while you can" suggestion. It won't be free for long, and it's very good. Campfires ' "Laurentide" is a little slice of lo-fi heaven. Refusing to fall into the malaise in which many lo-fi tapes mire themselves, Campfires brings an energy and vibe that recalls the early Kinks and, strangely, The Birds. There are plenty of hooky grooves driven by fuzzy guitars and uptempo percussion. This recording is high on the "replay" factor, and there's plenty more on their website (see below). Check out: [...]

From Michigan comes retro-slack rockers known as Biography . With an un-Googleable name, I have been unable to learn much about the band, but their music is steeped in the tradition of lo-fi. Comparisons can be made with classics like Truman's Water , Polvo , Sebadoh , and Pavement . boom.period is a wistful gem that celebrates the purity of slacker creative spirit - grab it while you can. San Diego's mixmaster duo, TV Girl , are set to release their first full length mixtape, The Wild, The Innocent, The TV Shuffle . The first two tracks really amp up the retro groove. "I Wonder Who She's Kissing Now" and "Misery" play on familiar themes: longing, rejection, and lost love. However, you get the sense that Trung Ngo and Brad Petering are having fun with it all. On "Misery", Petering provides a tongue-in-cheek proclamation for his love of that melancholy mind state. Read his commentary on Portals about "Misery" and the inspiration behind [...]

Yusuf Azak released The Prizefighter EP as a follow up to his debut album, Turn on the Longwire , released through Song, By Toad Records. It's easy to compare Azak to the likes of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith . His delivery is cool, introspective, and aware. The compositions are marked by excellent work on the guitar and piano. Paper Moon ( Sleep Steady Records ) is the first full length collaboration by American emcee "Perry Porter" and French producer ICBM. ICBM lays down interesting and diverse beats, layering samples, lots of piano, drum sequences, and synthesizer – it provides a nuanced and textured foundation for "Perry Porter's" laid-back, fluid vocal style. His rhymes are sincere and playful and distinctively drawling (reminiscent of Jay Z ). Paper Moon is available for minimum price of $1 on bandcamp – a bargain for a tasty slice of hip-hop!
