T Smith and Drew Brown form Young Men , a post-rock DIY outfit from Chicago. Songs of Praise has lo-fi grunge feel, and is marked with repetitious chord changes that allow for riffs to pop off or droning melodies to undulate. It's reminiscent of college radio from the early nineties, and the sounds made famous in the documentary, 1991: The Year Punk Broke . You can pick up a limited run cassette from The Branks Limited for $5 or download a free digital copy here . [...]

Youthful London alt-pop rockers, Being There , formed in 2010 while attending university in Manchester. They eventually moved to London, joined the label Young & Lost Club, and spent 2011 touring with Noah & The Whale. On Breaking Away , the four-piece outfit offers a pleasant introduction. Its charm is found in the sound of young musicians finding their voice and identity, much like U2 with Boy . There's a pervasive sense of melancholy that's gleaned through the perspective of songwriters on the cusp of adulthood, looking back at the carefree [...]

Out of Fullerton, California, The Steelwells are back with a new EP, and it is glorious! They've shifted from folk inspired rock to an indie rock sound fueled by rich synth tones, chirpy guitar effects, and layered vocals. While we loved 20092s Shallow on the Draft (especially "El Capitan"), Cool Kids pushes the boundaries of accessibility, demanding that you pay attention, while bathing in melody and memorable choruses. Their past roots provide a foundation, but it's their willingness to redefine that's most refreshing. Get this while [...]

Dominican-New Yorker Juan Alvarez (AKA WaMoo Papez [pronounced Payps]) mines indie rock, shoegaze, and dream pop sounds, distilling beats, vocals, and blips and rendering them as gothic & ethereal electronica, similar to the haunting sounds of Burial . He also lays down beats for the NY hip hop troupe, Warrior Monks , which “rap about mystic gangsta shit“. Check Out: [...]

Love Streams - "Shock Corridor" Single from an upcoming album (get it here) Will Sheff's new solo project seems like a cathartic release or maybe he just needed to do his own thing. Identity can get lost when playing in a band. "Shock Corridor" has an electropop feel, and very different than anything you've heard from Okkervil River. That stated, you can tell it's Sheff, his melancholic vocals cloud through. On his website , he writes: "In the early part of last [...]

Jeremy Squires - "Central Nervous System" from Central Nervous System (EP) released 8 January on Bandcamp All the while we've been oblivious to the presence of this great singer-songwriter in our backyard. A product of New Bern, NC, Jeremy Squires' authentic and earnest recordings are instantly appealing. There's not a lot of glamour or glitz in his songs, which are often recorded as lo-fi. It's plaintive folk with the bite of the eastern shore behind it. Check [...]
