Get comfortable, put on your headphones and enjoy! Beach Fossils - "Careless" from Clash the Truth on Captured Tracks out 19 February 2013 Are you ready for some jangly surf music? You can pre-order the vinyl release here . [...]

Balue came to us as a suggestion from a friend who has great taste. Eli Thomas is a bedroom artist whose music is a lo-fi amalgam surf rock, psych pop, and electronica that vaguely recalls Bear Hands or the more obscure, Bronze , but as bedroom pop. Thomas calls it a headphone album, but it's been on constant play in my car. So if you have decent set of speakers, turn up the volume. It's not going to rock out, it's more subtle than that, but it's dynamic. The only flaw in the album is a [...]

City Reign - "Retaliate" from Another Step out 25 February 2013 on Carboot Records A bit of a downshift from Manchester (UK) quartet. This morning...an eclectic mix of new and old in different genres to start your day. Enjoy! Railbird Releases the "Lucky" EP About a year and a half ago, I saw Railbird perform at the Tipsy Teapot. They had a split set with Rex Complex where they combined to play each other's tunes. That show absolutely melted my face. It was fantastic. They were touring in support of their self-released LP, No One , which was a big departure [...]

There's no need for me to go into David Brubeck's significance to modern music. Others are better suited for that task. Brubeck is firmly entrenched in my earliest music memories, along with Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Unlike those two modern giants of rock music who seeped into my head through Mom's turntable, Brubeck was introduced to me on AM news radio WBZ 1030 in Boston. I can't remember who specifically played his music (either Carl DeJesus or Dave Maynard) but it was someone who has long since retired. Almost daily, the morning radio personality would play "Take Five" or "Blue [...]

Clinic – Miss You [mp3] (from Free Reign , out now on Domino Records ) The surgical-mask-wearing foursome from Liverpool known as Clinic continue to make enchanting post-punky, art-rock. Awash in multi-instrumentalist surrealism, their fifth album is a bit more subdued and psychedelic-tinged than previous efforts. [...]

Passion Pit’s follow up to its popular debut, Manners, is a messy affair but worthy of close listening that pays off throughout. Their sophomore release titled, Gossamer , challenges, entertains and confounds, sometimes within the same song. The music is dense, complex, often overly busy, and swings wildly like the arc of a pendulum. The vocals are high pitched and nasally as if sung with lungs filled with helium. While that might not sound appealing, it’s nothing short of intoxicating. Many moments are sheer electopop bliss. But darkness lurks right near the [...]

Hard to believe we've entered the last month of this year. Soon it will be all over, and if you believe the Mayans, it might just be. Not one to vacillate and worry about things I can't control, I suggest we enjoy as much music as we're able to sustain. So let's get to it. Welcome, December! Grab a cup of coffee and check out these: Discover: The Wytches Surf-grunge wunderkind, The Wytches , are a trio out of [...]

Good morning and happy Friday! Some fine selections from the inbox this morning. Enjoy! Discover: Emil Lager Easy, breezy country blues from this Swedish expatriate living in London. He picked up a guitar in his late teens after hearing the Rolling Stones' "Can't You Hear Me Knocking?" (my personal fave), and he's been engulfed in it since. His love of country blues really stands out on tracks "Time Keeps Dripping" and "Fire Escape." Emil cites influences Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Blake for his guitar technique. The tracks [...]

The freaky Toronto duo known as VALUED CUSTOMER stray, just a bit, from the Resident -inspired weirdness of their previous efforts (check out Babylon Hill featured back in June) to embrace urban party people and intoxicated lounge lizards everywhere on their new album Voice/drum . The record uses keyboards, percussion, and vocals to spin tails of nightclub conquest, self-righteous boasting, and other sincere manifestations of mild or severe douche-baggery. The songs revel in R&B, hip-hop motifs, and inebriated blue-eyed soul, building on smooth beats and juxtaposing the tenor of Patrick [...]

Good mornin' to ya! A quick hitter today, but we're fans of these three tracks: Brave Baby - "Living In A Country" from Forty Bells out 15 January 2013 Superb indie rock track from this Charleston, SC quartet. Themes of loneliness and paranoia are accented by the ice pick rhythm guitar and eerie pitch bending on the back end of this track. Me likey lots! Click download for a free mp3. [...]
