Back on Christmas Eve , I posted a song by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci that just-so-happened to be called "Christmas Eve" (timing!). That song's lyrics consist of just 13 (lovely) words, repeated once. Posting the song got me thinking about other fully-formed songs whose lyrics are also made up of just a couple words. After a quick perusal of my hard drive, here's what I came up with. Consistent with the theme of the mix, I'll say no more. Enjoy. 1) Silver Jews - Open Field 2) Suede - Feel [...]

Androids dreaming of electric sheep. Today is the wonderful Festival Of Sleep Day . The holiday shopping is over, any annoying relatives who wore your-ass-out are hopefully gone and the new year festivities have subsided. Go back to bed. That's an order. Pete Yorn - Sleep Better Remember, sleeping is a lot like death, but not as permanent. Enjoy it. Related posts: Your Weekend Holiday - National Bring Your Teddy Bear To Work [...]

The folks at Wiaiwya - who you may recall as givers-away of a free Xmas EP last month - are offering what they claim to be the first new release of the decade. It's the debut single from The Wave Picture's frontman David Tattersall, which comes backed up by The Wave Picture's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pony Boy". They're limiting the freeness of the release to 1000 downloads starting at midnight GMT on New Year's Day. Because of the time difference between where they are and where I am, you should probably go [...]
I was gonna write this super-long year end recap thing today, but . . . c'mon, it's New Years's Eve and no one's reading any music blogs this week anyway, so fuck it right? Copying-and-pasting YouTube clips is definitely the way to go. Here is John Cale and a rather large orchestra doing a version of his "Paris 19193 - the greatest song written by any former member of Velvet Underground (seriously folks, Lou Reed is as overrated as they come) - from his album of the same name. He flubs a couple words during the [...]

not roy orbison In one of the weirder ways that I killed time during the holiday weekend, I searched around the internets on Saturday looking for a Roy Orbison cover performed by Okkervil River . For some weird reason, I was positive that Okkervil River had done a Roy Orbison cover. I was wrong. Dead wrong? No - just regular wrong. My searching, however, did yield some positive results, as it led me to this Okkervil River fan site . In a very-detailed section titled "Facts" [...]

This song came on at the Chinese restaurant I just had lunch at: Keren Ann - End Of May I don't think I've ever heard any song by a favorite of mine being played at any of the many Chinese restaurants I've been to in my life. Usually, they just play Mandarin versions of Celine Dion songs, which - though better than the originals - are far-from favorites. They played Mazzy Star after that, which was equally weird. And then I left - not because I mainly went there [...]
The Orpheum is a music venue in the Ybor City district of Tampa, Florida. In a part of town known for the constant turnover of its businesses (refer to any Hold Steady album for further info on Ybor City), The Orpheum has held up pretty well. It helps that there just aren't any other venues around that are perfectly-sized for the few indie bands that venture into Florida when they're touring the east coast. It's only real competition is The New World Brewery , across the street (more or less) from The Orpheum, which - though it [...]
This does not go on long enough: My excitement towards the huge amount of great bands releasing music in the early part of 2010 has been dulled considerably after giving an advance listen (draw your own conclusion) to several of these releases. With the clip above, along with the one track that's already been released, I'm remaining hopeful that Tindersticks will make me excited about 2010 again. Tindersticks - Black Smoke Computer Perfection got me excited a-plenty during 2009, especially [...]

December 27th is National Fruitcake Day . Some think today is all about eating any fruitcake given to you during the holidays. Others think it's about re-gifting the fruitcake to someone else. I personally suggest keeping the fruitcake in your freezer until next holiday season, then give it back to the same person who originally gave it to you. Eraserheads - Fruitcake Enjoy your New Year festivities.

A blog called Victory Rose Music has compiled a 2-CD collection of Sigur Rós performances from the past 10 years. All the tracks are re-mastered and mixed in such a way as to make it sound like one seamless concert. Download both parts here - it's definitely worth your time. The download also comes with folders featuring concert photographs and - even better - fan art like the stupefyingly-awesome drawing above. Here's another favorite: Yeah. It's kinda worth [...]

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Christmas Eve
Desperation breeds strange activity Tinted Windows has earned the worst of everything for my year-end post. These distinct merits include Worst Band of the Year/Decade, Worst album, Worst Song, Worst Video and Worst Lip-Synching in said video. I cannot fathom the evil quantum physics that had to coagulate for these musicians to form a band. Tinted Windows - Messing With My Head I can understand why James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) and the guy from Fountains of Wayne would hook-up with Taylor Hanson (yes, [...]

With all the good tidings of the holiday season - combined with listening to so many great song from the past year and past decade , I totally forgot to be a cynical asshole and look at the flipside of all this end-of-year wankery. I apologize for this oversight and promise that I won't ever go this long into a month without being unnecessarily negative. The idea for this post came into my mind while I was driving home from work last night. Almost as soon as I thought about it, [...]

Sorry, I've run out of songs. If you're still craving some Christmas tunes, go visit Tyge's blog, The Neon Lounge , and have a listen to his Christmas mix CD. Part One is here . Part Two can be found over here . For those whose tastes are more hipstery than Tyge's, you can also check out Stereogum's collection of indie rock Christmas songs . If you haven't gotten sick of hearing bands cover Wham's "Last Christmas", you'll definitely reach your limit after going through their list. As with last month's series of Magnetic Fields covers, [...]
