Review: Field Day Festival 2011 Field Day Festival , started in 2009 and now in its third year, took place this weekend amidst some heavy anticipation for its exceptionally strong line-up, featuring US/Canadian rarities Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Born Ruffians and Willy Mason alongside some top UK underground talent and some bigger Mercury Prize-type acts such as Wild Beasts, The Horrors and Kieran Hebden. 2011 has already seen more than 30 festivals pulled altogether in the UK alone, Ignition Festival being the most recent, as the wave of enthusiasm which has come over the [...]

New: Air France - It Feels Good To Be Around You Sincerely Yours Records is fast becoming one of Sweden’s most influential record labels, focusing in on Gothenburg’s iconic airy balaeric pop scene with an involvement which yields the successes of new electronic acts to a degree hugely inspirational for independent artists all over Sweden. With a sound which is becoming synonymous with the label (which also houses JJ, Ceo, Memory Tapes, and The Tough Alliance), Air France reconcile that gentle, dreamy post-disco sound of so many of their contemporaries with [...]

Four Tet dropped ‘Locked’, a new song from his hotly anticipated Fabric Live 59 mix early this morning, which will see release on his own Text Records next month. Locked looks on the surface to be a return to the his percussive early material, though the manner in which his rigid melodies rise so majestically to prominence as the song unfolds is a key feature of 2010’s There Is Love In You. DJ sets from Hebden are a truly life changing event, so will be fascinating to see his Fabric Live mix come out as something a little [...]

I’m at Field Day London this weekend, but to keep you occupied until my review goes up next Saturday - here’s a few songs from the past week’s music. DOWNLOAD MP3 OF SHOW / LISTEN TO RESONANCE Firstly, in a vein which The Weeknd seem to have opened wide - that of haunting RnB with some very smoothly produced vocals, Young & Sick follow with an addictive hip-hop instrumental. 1. Young & Sick - Room 48 ( MP3 ) In a quirky [...]

New Album: The War On Drugs - Slave Ambient After a three year period of rest following 2008’s double ‘Wagonwheel Blues/Barrel Of Batteries’ double release, broken only by 2010’s ‘Future Weather’ EP, The War On Drugs return on August 16th with their sophomore LP ‘Slave Ambient’, now streaming via Urban Outfitters Radio a full two weeks ahead of release. The LP, a third consecutive release on Secretly Canadian , is accompanied by a full US/European tour, dates of which can be found at the Secretly Canadian website, and also [...]

Certainly the redeeming feature of Twin Sister ’s Bad Street Single is contained within its B-sides; ‘In Heaven’, title track from the forthcoming debut LP, scuttles along merrily at a laborious pace until an untimely fade shifts focus to an underlying magical element. Indeterminate murmurs occasionally resemble melodies, but nothing pushes itself too hard. The track takes itself controversially down, rather than up - something, subtle, but all too rarely seen in successful music. Second B-side, ‘You Remind Me Of’ (or C-side?) weighs in at half-length, and introduces a careful vocal over some conservative clean-tones to delay excitement further. [...]

Introducing.. Jordan Busson Stumbling across the Soundcloud page of South African born, London-based classical instrumentalist Jordan Busson , I couldn’t help but become immersed in his desolate, and as he informs me, as of yet unfinished, trio of arrangements. ‘Three Of Swords’, ‘Unearth’ and ‘Coda’ are all delicately positioned to the most convincing degree, ‘Three Of..’ opting to pierce with a sparse piano line some vague and formless whirr, ‘Unearth’ doing similar work but, crucially, by means of violin, trickling through a tremolo bass feedback in some of Busson’s most unsettling (or perhaps ‘Unearthing’) material. [...]

Preview: Field Day, Victoria Park, London, 6th August 2011. ( Tickets - Nearly SOLD OUT) Download the This Music Wins Field Day Mix Enthused so predictably by the childish wave of excitement which unfailingly accompanies the purchase of music festival tickets, I thought that time, now, the best time for me to vent my strong sense of anticipation for Field Day 2011 in to some sort of light contemplative prose. The form of this preview, therefore, is that of me [...]

New: Teenage Nothing - Blur / Pearl Just got our hands on the debut release from recently conceived New York chill-wave project ‘Teenage Nothing’. Alex Mitchell is the man behind this double single release, sculptor of the beautiful beat-driven ambience of ‘Blur’ and soulful sample based nostalgia ridden hip-hop of its B-side ‘Pearl’. Promising new releases worth keeping tabs on, fully deserved of appreciation beyond that which such an unassuming pseudonym might unfortunately suggest. Teenage Nothing - Blur ( MP3 ) Teenage Nothing - [...]

New Album: Neon Indian - Era Extraña ‘Era Extraña’, (literally translated from Spanish as either ‘Strange Era’ or ‘She Was Weird’, depending on the context) is Neon Indian ’s second album and follow up to 2009’s Psychic Chasms, and is set to drop September 13th through Palomo’s own Static Tongues imprint. It was recorded over the Winter of 2010 in Helsinki, Finland and precedes a full US tour with similar artists and fellow blog-favourites Com Truise and Purity Ring . ‘Fallout’ is the first single from the record, and is being [...]

New Album: DUDES - NARCISSISTS ANONYMOUS Ryan from self-confessed “ neo-funk-chill-psych-swag-goth -wave” three-piece DUDES , based in San Diego, sent over their first official EP “NARCISSISTS ANONYMOUS” on Monday night. This is set to be a huge cassette for any fans of Small Black, AnCo or even Toro Y Moi - blending the noisier elements of the three to make for a glitch-ridden and delay-heavy proximate of over-driven trip-hop. Accompanying the release is a 90s style role playing game eponymously titled DUDES , which is worth a mention [...]

New: Girls - Vomit When Girls’ burst on to the scene with the release of their debut album, ‘Album’ back in 2009, their image was very much one of a set of 60s revivalists aiming to recreate somewhat the sounds and suggestions of the music of the Beach Boys and Buddy Holly - their single ‘Lust For Life’ was a hand-clapping surf rock song which weighed in at barely 3 minutes in length. Despite the debut’s carelessly fuzzy lo-fi aesthetic, a certain level of depth and wideness of emotional scope was consistently hinted at, [...]

New: M83 - Midnight City The disturbing masked creature in the photo above forms the artwork for the long-awaited new M83 single ‘Midnight City’, taken from Anthony Gonzalez’s forthcoming double LP “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” set to drop this October 18th through Naive . Though striking immediately as a little obvious, ‘Midnight City’ powers through some very simple but eerily expansive chord changes to evoke the kind of sleek city imagery and foggy synth-wave sound the band have been steadily making famous across their ten year career. The double album was [...]

New Track: Dum Dum Girls - ‘Coming Down’ Dum Dum Girls have been a joy to watch these past couple of years as their music goes from strength to strength. ‘Coming Down’ is the first taster of their sophomore album ‘Only In Dreams’, which will drop September 27th via Sub Pop in the US. Its a courageous return, which sees the quick-fired punkish overtones of the ‘ He Gets Me High EP ’ shunned in favour of a dark and wallowing 6 and a half minute track, reminiscent somewhat of [...]

Gold Panda dropped his latest track, MPB, via the Gold Panda site this morning, providing us with a wonderfully tight and rhythmic electronic jam not marked by a hint of recklessness. Instead, the track further exemplifies just how much he deserves his role within the market, as that of a leader who goes from strength to strength with his calm and controlled, mathematical dance music, riddled with polyrhythms and discordial, oriental-themed melodies. MPB is just that, and keeps its head down, rolling forth with a relentless drive and a hard-edge synthesised grit which eventually descends into a [...]

Memoryhouse , without doubt the finest purveyors of icy dream pop music in Toronto, possibly even the whole of Canada, are set to release a re-recorded, remixed and re-mastered version of their breakthrough EP, The Years, via Sub Pop this September 13th. A blog post on their excellent Tumblr page reveals how the band approached the first ever physical pressing of the EP in a "manner that is consistent with memoryhouse’s noises and idiosyncrasies while broadening [its] sonic pallet", not something, according to the band, which the term "re-issue" could fully convey. The Years EP will [...]

[ DOWNLOAD MP3 OF SHOW / LISTEN LIVE ON RESONANCE ] Recent Domino Records signees Twin Sister announce their debut album, and drop new single 'Bad Street' as free download. The electronic influences on 'Bad Street' are suddenly very definite, the song taking on a new found mechanical pop format, which comes across far more rigidly than their psychedelia tinged soundscapes from their first two EPs. What seemed like a unique and honed sound appears to have been subject to somewhat of a reshuffle; will be interesting to see how 'In Heaven' [...]

An unexpected but welcome drop from Zach Condon's Beirut has hit stores today, in form of 73 single 'East Harlem / Goshem', via Pompeii Records . A live recording and short introduction to the song confirms that Condon wrote this when he was 17, dispelling the so-called confirmation which has seen so many fan excited for potential new Beirut material this year. There's still room for speculation however, the project making no murmurs of unrest, having not released material since 20092s stunning March Of The Zapotec / Holland EP. Whether this further incites rumours of a third [...]

[ DOWNLOAD MP3 OF SHOW / LISTEN LIVE ON RESONANCE ] Its been a pretty busy week in music compared to the normal rate of happenings - typical, in the sense that right now is the one time of year I need to be totally absorbed in Philosophical study in preparation for exams. In music, The Books' Nick Zammuto has unleashed a 73 song-strong Soundcloud page, in effect a gold-mine of spin-off material from The Books . Track 'YAY' seems to be the 'single', in so far as is [...]
