Yelle Live at the Music Hall of Williamsburg

Yelle Live at the Music Hall of Williamsburg It was almost a year ago when I first caught wind of the French pop-star Yelle. The record label I was working for was promoting her new album “Safari Disco Club” and received hundreds of her albums and posters. I was immediately drawn to Yelle because she had a strong style resemblance to one of my favorite female rockers, Karen O. Upon first listen of her album I was sold. I do not speak French and did not understand a single word of what was going on, but I did know: it sounded happen, was impossible to not dance to, [...]

Yelle Tonight at the Music Hall of Williamsburg!

Yelle Tonight at the Music Hall of Williamsburg! Tonight, Yelle will be taking over the Music Hall of Williamsburg with Housse De Racket in towe. According to the rave reviews we have been reading left and right, both French pop-duos rocked Webster Hall last night. Yelle is fronted and named by Yelle, nee Julie Budet, a sparky gamine with a deceptively demure schoolgirl voice. Joined by producers GrandMarnier (Jean-Francois Perrier) and Tepr (Tanguy Destable), Yelle first arrived amid a flurry of 802s inspired pop, with the likes of CSS and New Young Pony Club all revered for their take on brightly colored electro. Unfortunately tonight’s show is sold [...]

Baths Brings Swooning Vocals and Electro Rhythms to Bowery Ballroom

Baths Brings Swooning Vocals and Electro Rhythms to Bowery Ballroom Last Friday, the Bowery Ballroom played host to an eclectic mix of excitable fans who gathered to bask in the pop vocals and electro beats of Will Wiesenfeld as Baths.  Will, who has also released tracks under the Geotic and [Post-Foetus] monikers, has become just as well known for his affable onstage banter and humble regard for fans as for his high energy shows, and this night was no exception. First up  was musician and producer Joel Burleson's Ki:Theory.  Embodying cut-n-paste music at its best, Ki:Theory's original songs [...]

Ticketmaster Settlement Pays Us the Money They Stole

Ticketmaster Settlement Pays Us the Money They Stole If you've used Ticketmaster's fun-filled website to purchase tickets in the past twelve years your concert addiction will be getting some much needed help. Well 'help' like a slap on the face. A proposed class action settlement will force Ticketmaster to credit $1.50 per ticket order (up to 17 orders) to customers due to the fact that they profited off of "processing fees". Despite the max payout being a hefty $25.50 for avid concert-goers, the reality is that Ticketmaster is screwing you again . See this money is actually in the form of Ticketmaster "credits" which may only be [...]

Second Day of BEMF Brings the Beats

Second Day of BEMF Brings the Beats The second day of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival took the energy from the previous day's festivities and doubled it, with all of Williamsburg awash in the sound of beats and dancing feet. Rubble from the night before was still littering the streets as the darkness set in, the energy picked up, and New York City's cool kids emerged from their hangovers to start the party all over again. At the Public Assembly Loft, Tim Sweeney stepped in around midnight, spinning his signature blend of house and disco, grooving right along with [...]

11-11-11 in NYC. Plaid and BEMF Day 1

11-11-11 in NYC. Plaid and BEMF Day 1 11-11-11 was a magical day for NYC's music scene. Plaid and the Gamelan Dhara Swara played at LPR, it was the first night of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, Paco Osuna was spinning at Good Units, and MiM0$a was rocking out at Webster Hall alongside Alex English. Energy levels were high and HiFi was on a mission to catch as much music possible for the eve. Le Passion Rouge was first on the list. We made our way through the doors with plenty of time to down a few Vodka-RedBulls during happy [...]

One-On-One with Casey Spooner of Fischerspooner

One-On-One with Casey Spooner of Fischerspooner Fischerspooner is THE band that jump started my electronic-music obsession almost ten years ago. When I was offered the chance to sit down and chat with Casey Spooner (half of the Fischerspooner duo), I gasped and squealed like an over-enthused 13-year-old girl and immediately accepted the offer. Though I tortured my brain day for days on end to come up with ‘the best’ interview questions, as soon as I sat down with Casey and cracked upon a Stella, my preparation dissolved into thin air. Casey was (and is) a kind, gentle soul and easy to talk to. He looked dashing [...]

Don’t miss Warp Records’ PLAID tonight at LPR

Don’t miss Warp Records’ PLAID tonight at LPR Plaid is not just for hipsters, country music stars, your grandfather, or Scottish kilts. That statement was not meant to offend, nothing beats wearing a heavy plaid button down on a cold New York City day like today, but I am not talking about anything clothing related. The Plaid I’m speaking of is the group of two master curators and creators of sound, the London based duo, Andy Turner and Ed Handley. Apologies, but I must take a few minutes to gush about how phenomenal these two musicians are. A friend introduced me to Plaid about three years [...]

Kraak & Smaak: Tonight at DROM

Kraak & Smaak: Tonight at DROM Wim Plug, Mark Kneppers and Oscar De Jong are the studio core of Kraak & Smaak. Their 802s inspired disco funk vibrations resemble a hypothetical hybrid between Curtis Mayfield and Jamiroquai. After originally bonding over a slavish devotion to vinyl and a love for classic funk records, this trio went on to record their debut album, ‘Boogie Angst’. Picked up in the UK by Radio 1 and in LA by KCRW the band quickly acquired fans, especially in the Los Angeles TV and Film community. This led to their music being used in hospital chick show Greys Anatomy that in [...]

Deathrow Tull Melted Santos Party House

Deathrow Tull Melted Santos Party House Friday night, the moon was out, and frost bitten air ran amuck through the desolate streets of Chinatown while organized chaos took place in the basement of Santos Party House. Deathrow Tull was at it again. The band was able to fill the basement to capacity on the first ‘winter’ night of the 2011 season. The bodily warmth of the packed audience was a delightful contrast from the horrific street cold. It was apparent that everyone was ready to absorb and engage in an energetic live show. The lights turned red as the band and crowd unanimously chanted “Deathrow Tull [...]

BALANCE 020 Mixed by Deetron

BALANCE 020 Mixed by Deetron BALANCE 020, a two-disc compilation mixed by Sweden's Deetron , will be out Tuesday, November 8. Featuring a selection of classics and lesser-known tracks, this mix seeks to prove that vinyl and digital mixing can coexist. As Deetron puts it, “This compilation is a celebration of the gorgeous format that is vinyl and a praise for the endless possibilities the digital world has to offer.” The track selection and structure of each of these two sublime mixes lovingly and carefully reflects that inherent choice of medium, while at all times reminding the listener why his highly accessible, humanistic sound [...]
