Summer is a arguably the most musical season (just taking precedence over the Christmas period, y’know there’s a lot of music about then, mostly cheese central playing everywhere you go.) Ice cream eating, camping, building sand castles (sand mounds) or there’s always the hangover nursing. Whatever you’re doing, Coasts' new single ‘Stay’ is sure to entertain your ears. All this summery lark may have something to do with the paradise-like and carefree surroundings in their video; blissful. Read more..

'Happy To You’ is the second album from Swedish indie pop band Miike Snow. Comprised of three producers, the project started out humbly with them just playing around for fun, but has transformed to them developing a wide and devoted following. Thus this album has great expectations and has a hard act to follow in the self-titled first record. Read more..

So this year was a leap year, which meant we all got an extra day to enjoy. So the question asked myself is what I can do to cherish this leap year day (29th February) as they don’t come around very often. I decided what better way to spend this extra day and see the band that everyone is talking about; GOTYE. I found myself at London’s Shepard’s Bush Empire, a building I’ve passed many a time on the bus and never really paid much attention to. But this venue isn't called one of London’s best for no reason. With [...]

Athena’s strength is in her fragility, and as her story is revealed on ‘Peeling Apples’ she navigates the most intimate subjects on human nature and relationships with the skill of a classic songwriter, and one of the UK’s most original voices. As Jamie Cullum recently noted Athena is “classic with a twist”. Born in London to Greek parents, Athena’s mother would sing her to sleep with traditional folk songs and lullabies and she grew up in a house that reverberated to classical music and Greek song cycles, as well as the more straightforward pleasures of The Beatles a... I have a little treat for all you NENers. The debut single from Finn Bonel, a South Londoner with a song that will melt your winter frozen heart. Finn Bonel writes songs from the depths of his rustic soul and permeates them with a unique and authentic vocal. In a modern day pop world of glitz and glamour, Finn’s primary concern is to block out the dazzle and wrench the hearts of listeners as he pours his own raw emotion into heartfelt lyrics and entrancing melodies. The song is "Love's The Only Thing " and it comes with a lovely video. [...]

'Exits, Pursued By A Bear' is a track full of energy, an energy that catches you and takes you down a road of twisting and melodic riffs and stop/start rhythms, speeding angrily until you reach the corners, corners that are taken with a sense of softness and tenderness. Although Late Night Fi... Read more..

Don’t panic! You haven’t somehow teleported back to the late 1970s. You’ve just listened to the recent single by Dan Sartain, a throwback to the golden era of punk, and to the legends of the genre in The Buzzcocks or The Clash. Using only three main chords, a fast paced rhythm and simple, repetitive lyrics, ‘Now Now Now’ has caught hold of the characteristics that made the first punk bands so appeali... Read more..

Invoking images of seedy 1920’s New Orleans jazz clubs (but in a really good way!) the vocals on this track take over and cause the listener to reminisce on a life they never actually had. Little Annie Bandez (an American singer/songwriter) provides the vocals for this track by Larsen and she has clearly been insp... Read more..

I stumbled apon Tom Price-Stephens whilst reviewing this band in Islington. I was in the middle of unsuccessfully trying to pick up a girl with some Mad Men quotes when I heard his soulful voice penetrated the heineken-sponsored fog that had descended on my faculties, causing me to end my conversation (if one could call it that) rather abruptly and stumble, camera in hand, to the make-shift stage next to the bar. 'Vampire Smile' is a gothic-pop offering from London based Kyla La Grange with an accompanying video which is a rather beautiful gothic/noir affair. Kyla’s voice is captivating and a voice that is, at many points, beyond her 25 years, a voice that on first listen could sound sweet but there is an u... Read more..

Playing in a packed out underground room in the city of Leeds, First Aid Kit put on a solid and enjoyable performance. For those who aren't familiar with the band, it consists of two Swedish siblings; Johanna and Klara, who were joined on stage for parts of the gig by a friend playing percussion. Despite a tentative start... Read more..

A name like Dog Is Dead certainly sticks in your head and gets you thinking, but shouldn’t be shunned away or misinterpreted; they’re a group of humble background and intentions, playing the catchy-but-clever indie they do because they love it. They don’t shout about it or try to captivate an audience with an over-the-top live performance, but simply put everything they have into sounding fantastic. Read more..

Here’s a band with no limits and no sign of slowing down, fuelled by determination and a passion for what they’re doing. After a triple dosage of no synth records, The Magnetic Fields appear to have been swept by nostalgia as they rekindle themselves with the sound that established them all those years ago. Yes, the return of the synth and if ‘Andrew In Drag’ is anything to go by, their forthcoming album, ‘Love at the Bottom... Read more..

If I were to describe Islington, it would be to say it’s pretty much where everyone in Camden moves to when they get jobs. It’s packed full of trendy bars and pubs that host live events and open mic nights, where you’ll everything from Elvis impersonators and youngsters butchering Radiohead songs, to hip hop duos doing skits on Postman Pat. Imagine if Rizzle Kicks were talented and, instead of being cheeky mummy’s boys, they made songs about getting wasted, plum jam, and blowing a certain famous feline’s brains out. Too Many T’s are that duo. Read more..

Ten Million Colours may have a name like the promotional tag for a Dulex colour chart advert but musically are a mismatch of sounds and influences. So their name in this instance is so well suited. This gives them a much needed boost ahead of all the other bands that are dwindling in the same genre. ... Read more..

There’s a lot to admire about Wallis Bird. Her vocals have a strength that's unusual amongst female acoustic artists, and the fact that this single is taken from a third album release demonstrates a consistency and longevity that many in her field don’t accomplish. She also shows a bold streak in that the May tour supporting the album will consist of just her travelling around with her guitar rather than relying on the versatility offered by a full band.
