Bernard Farley's (aka Outputmessage) latest release, the Quantum Love EP, is out today on Output Noise Records . Member of Volta Bureau and self-described math nerd, the DC-based producer has put together a five tracks which ruminate over the connection between love and physics. R&B ballad "Tachyons" is a highlight (named after theorized particles that bend the rules of time). Farley sings of a love that once was and how "nothing's gonna bring it back" despite his stubborn attempts. The result never appears forced. Instead, the track feels simple and earnest. And [...]
With his track “Petrified” landing #18 on the Beatport Tech-House Charts and Tiesto recently playing his remix of “Plex” on Club Life 282, there is now doubt that the sounds of John Roman will soon be noticed on every dancefloor across the globe. This 23 year old producer from Toronto, Canada has been compared to some profound artists such as Proxy, Crookers, Sinden, and Harvard Bass. Pitchfork claimed “Petrified” as a “footwork siren” and Sinden describing it as “an absolute techno monster." We were excited to learn a little bit more about him. [...]
Odesza is a new name to the electronic pop world but the production talent behind it has quite the experience. The group consists of two young artists from Washington State who left their own individual projects to collaborate in this new outfit. Their initial announcement came just a little over a month ago with a preview track “How Did I Get Here” from their now-released debut LP. Since then, they’ve gathered a decent following - knowing their potential in solo projects, frequenters of the genre knew this collaboration was not to be ignored. Their debut LP titled [...]
Halfway between Passion Pit and Frank Ocean lies Redline Graffiti. The collective owes much of their stylings to last year's wave of lo-fi electronica (see: Neon Indian, Washed Out, et al). Yet with the sexy swagger of R&B combined with an eye for pop hooks and a rock 'n' roll flare, their fresh take on this DIY aesthetic is all their own. We caught up with Donald and Drew, two members of the foursome, ahead of their appearance at the Black Cat this evening to talk about inspirations, aspirations, and more. [...]
My favorite Sky Ferreira song out there is actually a cover of Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back" produced by Skeet Skeet. Maybe it's knowing her in the context of a Stevie Knicks cover, but the whole set-up of "Everything is Embarrassing" really fits perfectly for her throwback voice and the producers do well to not put much processing on top. It's a heartbreaker of a song, and with the drum line + slap-bass it's got a definite 802s pop quality. Is hipster quiet storm a genre yet?
DC-based electronic trio Volta Bureau will take to the main stage at Black Cat tomorrow night (Fri, Sept 7) for a highly anticipated live performance. There's a lot of anticipation leading up to this one - their first live set since U Hall in March and Lumen8 Anacostia in April. Definitely expect to hear some new material. Plus, they'll be joined by locals Protect-U and Redline Graffiti , the former coming off a recent release on Planet Mu. In the months since their last live performances the Volta Bureau boys have been busy. Earlier this week the group [...]
Love Garage. LOVE UK Garage. Because it's pretty amazing - what's not to love about fast, syncopated, drum patterns with pulsing strings and Rhodes organs winding around it? Add some soulful vocals and you have a recipe for the greatest genre that didn't quite manage to hold on. Enter Delilah, as remixed by MJ Cole, one of the original UK garage guys. Beautiful and emotional, the chorus rings out with melancholy until Cole loops the vocals into itself as a pseudo drum-roll. it resolves into a flurry of jazzy Rhodes organ (see :30 and 2:20) that's enough to [...]
The Moon Boots remix of Alison Valentine's "Peanut Butter" has a lot in common with 2001 thug love duets. The light, airy, vocals play well with the piano stabs that might as well be from an Irv Gotti beat . Needless to say, this is a song to be enjoyed in a 98 coupe with the windows down. The remix is really well constructed - the layering of Valentine's choral vocals under the main hook is particularly effective. Summer may be drawing to a close, but there are at least a couple warm, sticky nights [...]
Volta Bureau 's latest collaborative effort with long-time friend Gwenno (of the Pippettes), a remix of of her August release " Ymbelydredd ," adds a signature hypnotic pulse and house beat to the whimsical and emotive indie-pop tune that tells of young summer love, uncertainty and mischief. Volta Bureau's effortlessly mesmeric touch makes it easy for listeners to slip away into a daydream of a youthful, carefree affair in Gwenno's hometown of Cardiff (see lyrics in the original Welsh, and English translation, at the bottom of the post). "Ymbelydredd (Volta Bureau Remix)" is available [...]
Looking for new artists to break through in 2013? Well, we’ve got an exciting one for you not too far from us in the DC area. Straight out of Centreville, MD, 18 year old University of Maryland student Brandon Choe is someone to look out for. This computer-engineering student has been producing for only a year but Brandon has the talent of taking eccentric electro beats and transforming them into colorful and catchy house tracks. Being strongly influenced by his family, his dad introduced him to dance songs of the 80’s and 90’s and cousin has [...]

Claude VonStroke has always kindly suggested that you book him "if you want to enjoy yourself and get sweaty and nasty." But if your idea of fun is "wear[ing] a sweater and a frown in the VIP section," then he advises against it altogether. This no-frills approach has served him well: as a producer, he's been supported by the likes of Pete Tong and Richie Hawtin; as a DJ, the man has no regard for convention, blending genres and electrifying dancefloors. His credentials are bottomless. And we haven't even mentioned his label, dirtybird Records , which has changed the [...]

Legendary British DJ and producer Danny Howells has been around the world and back too many times to count. Blisspop had the pleasure of catching up with the globetrotting jock ahead of his upcoming date in DC to talk about his label, playing back-to-back and the records that never leave his bag. Catch Danny this Friday (Aug 31) at U Street Music Hall for a very special appearance presented by Deep Secrets and Nomad . Tickets and info here . [...]
With such a high demand for a tasteful bassline in dance music, under-rated Sheffield DJ/producer Walter Ego does not disappoint by producing a stunning 3 track EP titled Shadows released under Kastle’s label Symbols Recordings. Commonly know for more of his grime-UK funk-2-step productions, Walter Ego goes a little deeper with this EP. The first track “Shadows” can be comparable to the works of Burial, beautifully written using chopped up manipulated vocals, with a strong 2-step percussion. Shaking it up a bit with the next track “Rebounds,” provides an upbeat, groovy garage beat [...]
From Norway, Kasket Club brings us a consistent pleasure of summery, electronic pop. Being only two months young and with less than a half-dozen tracks in the queue, this duo nails each work with a relaxing, upbeat atmosphere that nurtures chillwave and indie pop. They dress funky bass with warm, patterned synths and hazy vocals to form a diverse rhythm for each track that’ll have you on unconscious repeat. The Olso-native producers worked separately with electronic music up until this collaboration, allowing Kasket Club to begin with uniquely acquired talent. Take a listen to a few [...]
Chris Nitti guides us through the depths of uncharted territory in his latest mix, August - a series of deep cuts that lay the groundwork for an enjoyably emotional musical landscape that's easy to get lost to. August leads the way with Ripperton's V Remix of Andrew Lodemann's "Where are you now?"; a calm and mildly combative selection that eases into Einzelkind's "Blues For Yous (Roman Flugel Remix)" before prompting listeners to pass through the wobbly cryptic synths of Martin Dawson & Jay Shepheard's "Cut A Hole." A sliver of [...]
Early last year we caught sight of Ian Bevis, or Bear Mountain - folk artist turned electronic producer. At that time, he was testing the waters in the electronic genre with his first non-folk single, "Swim." Since then, we've kept an eye on him as he's released numerous remixes and singles, building up to his debut EP XO which was released August 7th. The 7 track production includes a mastered version of "Swim" along with some incredible new work that undoubtedly shows his progression. Glimpses of bongos and folky vocals showcase his musical youth, [...]
Having previously released music with some of the biggest labels in the game, this outing is no different. Out August 13th on Get Physical, Strange Attractions is a two-track EP from Londoners by way of Montreal, Blond:ish - a sensual journey into the world of voyeurism and deviance. On A-side "Voyeur," Thomas Gandey sings with a knowing smirk, "you're good from afar, but you're far from good..." amidst crisp percussion and a slinking bass line that recalls mischievously watching your neighbor from your bedroom window, as she sunbathes beside her pool. The B-side, "Distant Lover," [...]
