Pete Quaife who was one of the founding members of psych-pop group The Kinks, died yesterday in the age of 66. Quaife was a terrific bass player, who played melodic lines and had a great sound and feel for harmony, and played in The Kinks most interesting and important albums. Cause of death was not reported. Sunrise, The fifth album by TX veterans My Education, is an interesting album. Originally, Sunrise , started as the soundtrack of the 1927 silent film Sunrise : A Song For Two Humans , but moved on to be a psychedelic, post-rock journey of deepest human feelings and descriptions of the desolation of rocks in the bottom of the ocean. It's not only those soaring cello/viola parts that fits perfectly as the album opener, and as a result - set the tone for the entire album, it's not [...]
Holy shit. The debut LP by LA psychedelic one man band White Fence is absolutely stunning! Tim Presley , the man behind this - Please take me away, acid heads, to a trip in my subconscious world. Find Syd Barrett and let me sit with him for a game of chess. Get me on the treadmill with the guys from the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band , pass along the superglue from Mo Tucker to me (she's been holding it for too long anyway), [...]

A cool new song buy psychedelic TX group The Black Angels . The song, Bad Vibrations will appear in the full album, due to be released in September. The two previous albums of theirs, marked their way to the top as one of the great Spaceman3 / Velvet influenced bands around. This is not to say anyuthing about originality, because they are. Read my two cents on Passover The new song, [...]

I know I'm fashionably late here, and that the resonance of the fuzz guitar had maybe declined by now, but I finally decided to share my thoughts with the world about the Escape EP (out on Woodist ) by American duo Moon Duo . The duo is essentially the fruitful collaboration of Wooden Shijps guitarist Erik Johnson and Sanar Yamada and it's highly recommended to those who didn't get enough of the Shjips releases [...]
You're probably asking yourself what's that cool banner above. Well, thanks for asking. It's a new category here in Small Town Romance, that will deal with Psychedelic and Underground from South America. It was a crazy bubbling scene, with many fantastic groups, described by Josi, a wonderful person and expert to this field, from the Israeli psychedelic forum in Tapuz portal. More information about that here . And now – let's go to the first post. Tango was originally born under the name of [...]

The most excellent blog Citizen Dick had published yesterday Looking Up , the new song by E (Eels frontman). The song is a cool retro-church-gospel thing, full a good vibe and spirit and it's a perfect opening for this morning. The full album, titled Tomorrow Morning will be out in August 24. Eels - Looking Up
Plantagenet 3 is a London based trio who sent me a request to post about their debut single, that was released couple of days ago on Jitter . I'm glad they did that, as I was introduced to what you can call 'a stricking debut', caught me in a very interesting timing. Latley I've been listening to a lot Morricone music, you know, the music that accompanied the western movies of Leone like The Good, Bad and The Ugly [...]

Bill Wells is a musician I really appreciate. This self taught musician, who deals with electronic music and avantgard was and still is crucial for the sound of Scottish alternative, as he worked with bands like Belle&Sebastien , Arab Strap and more. He also recorded a wonderful album with the Swedish minimal/vintage electronic duo Tape (Released this year with Immune Records - fantastic album). Annie Whitehead is one of the leading feminine figures in the jazz world today. She already have [...]

A very interesting EP landed in my folder couple of days ago, by French label Wool Records . I already wrote about another release of this great label, the Pinneapple Dream by Double U and it's no surprise that this new release of theirs includes Double U once again. Wooly Jumpers EP#1 is a terrific EP, the first in a series of ep's the label plans to release that contains songs by artists they like. It's a nice concept, [...]

LA based band Letting Up Despite Great Faults had released their debut LP in late 2009. This relativley new electro-pop band, brainchild of Mike Lee is a intersting mesh between the lo-fi/shoegaze/whispering style of the many turns Neil Halstead took during his long career with Slowdive , then Mojave3 , then his solo career, along with 80's influences like New Order , and Bloody Valentine . [...]

I admit it, like every male, I have a weakness to women cello players. Unlike what you probably think, it's not about the way the cello is placed etc etc - no, really. I might be lots of cliches but I am not THAT cliche. It's just that they have such a gentle move on the neck of the instrument, that it makes me wanna be a cello myself. Tender fingers on a string, this is even better then to be the harp in Joanna's hands. Rasputina , the veteran [...]

You might wonder how come the pancake image appear in the middle of the week. Well, that's for a good reason. I'm taking a week off from writing, as I'm going with Eatliz to Spain, to play in Primavera festival! And because I'm a responsible man and blogger, I couldn't just leave you without your mixtape. So I made you a special two hours mixtape, so you won't feel my absence. Enjoy amigos. STR Mixtape : A Long One, While I\'m Away 1. Kevin [...]

Just yesterday I wrote about the new Smoke Fairies album and how it rocked my world and apperantley this is a good time in my life, as a another album refuses to leave my stereo system. Tame Impala is a new psychedelic trio from Perth, Australia . Of all bands in the world that could be less geographically challenging, Impala were chosen to be the opening act in the current MGMT US tour. That means something about their blend [...]

Ghosts , The debut album by UK duo Smoke Fairies really killed my plans for this Saturday. I planned on listening to the many cd's and lp's and mp3's waiting to be played and maybe shake my world. They ruined it. Indeed, my world was shaken. But it was only one album, that I've heard about five times today, and nothing else. Well, I also played the first albums by Trees , the 70's UK folk band, but that was just because I was searching for references. [...]

Couple of days ago, I took the liberty to admit that, yea, though I love experimental noise and saxophone drillers, I also love exotica and lounge. There's only so much nostalgia I can write about in one week, after all, this is 2010. But maybe because it's 2010, and the speed of events, the zeta-bytes of information, and our hurry to achieve whatever it is we're trying to achieve, that makes us all unease and turn us to three year old infants when it comes to our lack of ability to focus and stick to one thing. [...]
